My daughter is a fashion designer and we work together. We've sold to small boutiques, so we didn't have to go through all the things you've dealt with. Thanks very much for sharing your experience and being so transparent! You're a blessing.
Hey Evan. I don't know where to start first but let me tell you this. Me and my partners, we have been searching over and over the internet, retailers supply chain websites, videos, vlogs etc and for some reason I always felt like it wasn't enough. We really felt like there were a lot of things, really important things missing until my brother in law sent me your video this evening and, man oh man, am I not fascinated by your 33:35 video that completely answered so many of our questions. I can't thank you more. God bless for all the information given and the steps you talked about. I wish you the best on your journey. May God open your paths and makes them easier just like your heart desires. Hopefully one day we can meet in person and dinner will be on me ;) Thank you very much again and best wishes to you and your team. We send a lot of support from the beautiful state of Texas.....
I’m not in the market for your product; I’m over here in Europe and have zero plans to sell to retailers in the US, too. But I have to admit, I binge-watched your entire video like it was the latest season of my favorite show! It was so insightful that I almost forgot I wasn't in the market! You definitely know how to keep a viewer entertained! 🙂
Whoa. My ex father-in-law is a retired business professor. He is the first person to say that half of all business ideas fail. I’m glad you are showing him that you are a winner and you are doing a great job. Thank you for sharing.
This has got to be the most insanely value packed video I've seen. OMG man, thanks a LOT for this. Loved your videos in the One Percent program, but this is GOLDEN. Thanks again man!
Back in the early 90's my dad was running a software business and had a product he thought he could put in a box and get into retail. As soon as the conversation started it was clear that he couldn't: they wanted a certain marketing budget even to get a placement. Of course there wasn't e-commerce as we knew it then, either. That period was the ascendancy of the big box stores, and you really had to have a wad of investor cash to begin to play. He moved towards services instead of product and that paid the bills, but the dream of going bigger got set aside.
Great video !! I really enjoyed your video on my Sunday breakfast here from Egypt. Really glad that you came through those problems and gained precious experience. Wish you best of luck
Been there done that thankfully not with my own money, I'm grateful as well that I got to learn all those crap. Very technical on handling system but sps and big commerce are just monopolies that does not evolve.
WOW! Thank you for laying it out. My gut told me not to work with the big boxes but now I know why. It's basically them finding ways to dick around the consumer AND small business maker to increase profit margins for the stock market.
Don’t get me wrong. I’m not ungrateful or looking a gift horse in the mouth. There are a ton of benefits and money to be made. I wanted to touch on the things most don’t touch on
Man, thank you for realistic view on what it really takes, you really got too take each task one at a time! Really appreciated time you took to make this video, was this one take? lol 😮
😅 and now that I've finished the video... still stand by what I said but it's great that you were able to get your business growth eventually. My company is just far too small still. I do love working with mom & pop shops, do you have any experience with that? Love to hear it.
I do. It’s a great way to cut your teeth and get experience with b2b sales. It’s different. And tier 1 retailers are just a big complicated version of that. So I think it’s a great idea to figure out if you like it
Yup, retail can be a bitch... and then there is the flyers you are placed in... and then charged for... and then there is........................ and on and on it goes. Just setup you online store and sell direct.
It's one thing to not get paid for Net 30, because that's also long enough that you potentially have to pay the credit card, but net120? You need to either pay interest on a loan to front the product to retailers - or you need to pay it all up front and then hopefully get paid back, something, someday.
This is true. I also sell to a major retailer called Zumiez. They're really good to deal with but like what he said in the video the rules are strict. But they're way more relaxed than Michael's from what I'm hearing you say lol
If your products dont sell... Tge retailer puts it in the clearance isle, then... Sends you an invoice. Ill never look at the clearance isle the same again.
Thanks for letting others know the process. I deal with magazines and it’s no different dealing with retailers. It’s brutal for sure. 120 days is like a golden number for getting paid … magazines add another 30 days to that. Plus don’t forget about chargebacks, damaged inventory, etc they you don’t get paid for also. On a positive note if you have a good product and team you’ll do hood. Always learn from your mistakes and ask questions when you don’t know … oh read the fine print and get a lawyer. Again thanks for sharing!
Selling to tier 1 retailers. Now you're absolutely NO different than an automated shop in China. You're ranting about what a headache this is and how the stores screw you over. Businesses haven't had their companies broken by retialers..... They went to the retailer. They wanted to be broken. How do you know when you've become a sell-out? That's right, you start doing dirty business with a tier 1. I truly hope you reap what you've sown.
Retail in big box stores is NOT the "holly Grail" of product selling and it can actually be the downfall. Selling online DIRECT to your customers is the holy grail and since you said it's only like 30% of sales for you than you need to work on that part of your business more. Retail takes so much of your profit and comes with all the other downfalls.....

Major growing pains for sure man, but thank you so so much for sharing this peek behind the curtain. 🙏 ❤ wish you much happiness and success!
Liked, commented and subscribed because you kept it real regarding SPS commerce. Their customer service is a 'joke'.

Thank you for watching. You’re gunna crush this
It sounds absolutely exhausting. I'm not sure I'd be happy with this kind of relationship with someone who wants to squeeze every penny out of you.
Enterttaining. I knew it was a lot of work but the burning bridges part was the saddest,
Evan, Thank you. Crazy good content. Super helpful. Mark
This is PURE GOLD!

Takeaway # 1, get into the cardboard business.
Thank you for doing this video, that is great information.
Amazing video - the value provided and you explain things very well! Did you ever try Faire Wholesale?
Love trying to work out what the dog thinks you're talking about 🙃😄
I feel like he knows way more than I think….
I sold my photobooths at a big ticket store in NYC ... The things they asked me for, I had no idea lmao
Great vid - really helpful

What you selling scorch? Like the sponge you use for washing dishes?

The dog how cute

The pup cuteness distracting. I've rewinded like 5 times.
Oh good. That helps watch time. Thanks bear!
😉
They did not make you apply for a UCC # to create UPC#’s for your products?
Woah so that’s why most box store retailers are so expensive
This is one of the greatest videos ever made on RUclips wow just Wow.
Well....shit....thanks for this video....I owe you a beer
LOL... your dog in the background kind of shows how you must feel better than you do.
Thank You for sharing

Damn good looking man
I'm trying Odoo software for bz in 2025. They seem integrated for many bz types.
As an EDI Developer i Deal with this every day. Kohl is the worst
If your products dont sell... Tge retailer puts it in the clearance isle, then... Sends you an invoice. Ill never look at the clearance isle the same again.
The Big names: Impossible to work profitable
So tack an extea 10% on everything i sell to a retailer. Check.
Amazing
How much easier would it be now with the use of AI.
