- Gospel classics are songs that are special, they've been around for a long time. We all know them word for word, love them; they have a special meaning in our lives, and they will never be forgotten.
This gospel classic The Love Of God was penned by LeRoy Crume a member of the Soul Stirrers in the late 50's. LeRoy joined the group in 1955, his brother Arthur began playing guitar for the group in 1965. Leroy was with the Soul Stirrers during the days of Sam Cooke in the 50's. LeRoy's. The group first recorded and released the song in 1958 with Johnnie Taylor on lead. The Love of God has been recorded by various groups and choirs starting with James Cleveland and the Voices of Tabernacle in 1959, their first outing on the HOB label. The latest recording of the song by the Soul Stirrers was in 2008; on an album titled A Soul Stirring with Floyd Taylor on lead, the son of the late Johnnie Taylor. LeRoy's other musical credits include work with Aretha Franklin and the Staple Singers.
The Soul Stirrers was formed by Roy Crain, in Trinity, Texas. Among the members of that group was R. H. Harris, Jesse J. Farley, and T.L. Brewster. Harris who soon became the groups musical leader, brought several changes to the Soul Stirrers that affected gospel quartet singing generally. Over the years some notable's have passed through the Soul Stirrers; Sam Cooke, Lou Rawls, Johnnie Taylor, Paul Foster, and Julius Cheeks. The legacy of the Soul Stirrers continues to echo through the parallel worlds of gospel and soul music, and their urgent, expressive recordings never sound outdated. The Soul Stirrers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and they were inducted into the Vocal Group Hall of Fame in 2000.

We headed out the door to school many mornings in 1966 in Bessemer, Alabama with the Rev. James Cleveland singing a version of this song and I still can recall the morning announcement on WENN Birmingham. GOD BLESS!!!

I like this version as well as the version they did for speacialty. Johnnie Taylor was the orginal lead vocalist but I think Willie dose the song some justice.
