I own this same one here in Michigan, I think it looks cool and while these issues are technically legit, they aren't serious enough to make a big deal of IMO.
My first thought upon seeing these was "Oooh those look cool" my next was that they would be hard to see so nah. Thank you for confirming for me. I hadn't even considered the temp.
But black looks so much sexier! Looks like a secret agent, special forces gadget, like if James Bond had a kayak. Maybe get some waterproof LED lights or something. I do intend to take my black for sunset and night paddles.
Hi Steph! I also have a black Bay ST and can corroborate how hot it gets in the direct sun. I fixed this by purchasing a white vinyl sheet roll on amazon for cheap $, cut to size and placed it in the front top where my feet go. It helps a lot. I imagine all the touch areas can be done this way.
I looove my black oru, but agree that one needs to add visibility for safety. I will be kayaking in DC including the WINTER, so I'm really looking forward to the heat retention :). Absolutely, noone should buy a black kayak for hot weather FL kayaking! Water in the channels is not something I've played around with. I think letting it dry properly should take care of it? I don't like any water getting into those, and will play around with it a bit to see if it's happening. I've not seen this mentioned by Oru - do they have a response?
I have not brought this up to Oru. I think their respond would be you always want to lean the kayak up and let water drain from it for about 10 mins to make sure all the water is out of the channels. I will say I find it really hard to lean the kayak up without it falling or putting to much weight on the fairings. I do put it upside down to drain, but it's helpful to see where the water is to make sure it drains in my opinion.
Yes, they have done an orange one before but I think it was limited edition so they are probably sold out. They have also had green and blue in the past.

I live in the Pacific Northwest. I wonder if the black would keep me warm paddling on a grey cool day? Maybe that's where they might work.

Thanks for sharing! Do you kayak in places that are known to be hot weather locations?
@@smkauthor Definitely not as hot as you down in FL! I am in Chicago. We average 80-90 in the summer. Currently in the 70's.

I am pretty sure I have seen an orange Oru but I cannot find it anywhere 😢
