    The VS. style of content is great to learn about the strengths of every MMORPG involved. No matter who ends up being the winner in a match up, it is more important to find the game that fits your personal flavour of MMORPG.
    Although I like to call myself a MMO nomad with GW2 as home base, I missed out on LOTRO so far and this video reminded me again that I really should try it out some time.

    I love Bright's thoughtful and fair responses. Very good points. My only gripe is the immersion point ended up being more a cosmetics point than true immersion. Having played both games, I feel way more immersed and invested in lotro than gw2. My character is interacting with the world and situations in meaningful and sometimes subtle ways. I support the war of the ring in unique ways based on my choices and path. GW2 has you be the generic hero, the Commander! I never feel a sense of my own identity because gw2 defines it for me.
    For me lotro always brings me back. After hundreds of hours in gw2 I got bored and have never regretted leaving it. Both are good games but Lotro would be my personal winner. It is just more immersive and enjoyable for my tastes.

    I think for me it depends on my gaming mood for either of these games. Guild Wars 2 i can just jump in and automatically find a world boss event or some event going on in a map and have fun and get rewarded. Ive been a bit burned out on occasion due to the horizontal progression but at the same time i do enjoy it. Just depends on the mood of mmo I want to play
    LOTRO is a game where if I want to relax and enjoy the journey ill go there. Its all about exploration as its mostly a complete open world with unique creatures of middle earth running around and plus I love the music. I've never got to end game but im quite happy with that as im just exploring at my own pace. Ive had the game near enough since launch and my highest character is a lvl 62 captain. Ive dipped in and out over the last 10 or so years but it always brings me back. Its mainly due to games like GW2 which has taken me away due to its event system.

    And another one: The Race of Man recently got a character creation overhaul for the 16th anniversary and has a lot of new options. Some of them are quite controversial, but the devs really used every trick the engine allowed them to, to give us more options for our middle-earthian alter egos.

    That's a tough one... both excellent in different ways. If I were trying to be objective and judge based on modern gaming standards, I'd probably have to say GW2... it has much more varied content, its questing systems are unique, and the hybrid combat is great. But LOTRO is... just LOTRO, it is my favorite. As a Tolkien geek, if ya know ya know. Thanks for the video.

    I personally love GW2. While I think instanced PVE content is better in LOTRO, the fact I can refer to a schedule, rock up to a world event and know that there are always a ton of people doing metas, or bosses that don't even require grouping feeds that mmo group fix enough for me.
    I do want to devote some significant time to LOTRO though, maybe in the next couple months.

  • @Stands-In-The-Fire
    @Stands-In-The-Fire Год назад +1

    Both of these games, I have a fair bit of time into. GW2 I'm taking a break before diving into Cantha for the meat of the EoD storyline, and Lotro my Kin is alternating weeks between running the new Gwathenrost raid and taking our lowbie alts through old content.
    I can't outright disagree with any of your points, they were well thought out and presented. I'd personally have scored some things a *bit* different (unsurprising to most as I basically *live* in Lotro a lot of the time), but from a pure point to point scale like this I think I'd have ended up probably 4-3 for GW2 as well. And I choose to play Lotro far more, which goes to show that weighting and subjectivity is always going to be a thing. :) Looking forward to the next installment.

    Just an important distinction: Lotro does not have the holy trinity - it has four equally important main roles, that make the game special: Support (e.g. yellow LM and Burg, red Captain), DD (e.g. Hunter, Champ), Heal (e.g. Blue MInstrel, yellow Beo) and Tanks (e.g. Blue Guardian or yellow Captain)

    • @arthnewslaind

      gw2 also doesn't have holy trinity, every class can be anything depends on the build. thief can be a healer, ranger can fight in melee with greatsword or become a super tanky support when choose the druid specialization, guardian can be long rang dps with longbow, warrior can be burst dps with greatsword or used riffle or even become banner slave that support and buffing ally with their banners, necro can be power or condi dps or become healer

    I feel like LOTRO is better for the lore, and for fans of the LOTR universe because it really is the best Middle Earth experience ever. It is a massive game that goes deep into lore, has familiar faces, allows you to explore the areas you loved seeing in the movies, etc.
    If you're into the ACTUAL MMO experience (massive multiplayer...) with endgame, raids, PVP, PVPVE, etc it's not even close. Not to mention gameplay.

    Pretty simple to me, I've played LOTRO for 13 years but the LAG is just too much now. I'm in GW2 for the long haul now. Smoother, no lag, less frustration. SSG is dropping the ball over on LOTRO until they fix the lag. If you are playing LOTRO, go spend a couple of weeks on GW2 and experience a smooth, no lag game then try to come back, you will wonder why you ever played LOTRO.

  • @Tharanicus
    @Tharanicus Год назад +1

    Combat: Agree - GW2. But one point in LOTRO's favour for me is the amount of abilities to use, I feel they are better.
    Leveling/World Building: Agree - LOTRO - Really enjoy the leveling in LOTRO, that said after I think it kicks in more around level 30. It's a journey, smell the flowers, enjoy your time
    Character Immersion: Disagree :) - LOTRO - Character Creation is okay for lotro. I feel very immersed in LOTRO and it's lore, the feeling of the world, the vistas you come across, the world environment enriches the character immersion. I like the slower pace of the game.
    PVP: I hardly ever do PvP, so I'll go with what you say here. Although that chicken run massacre was fun. Is Wolfenraged in the house?
    Group PVE: Disagree - GW2. LOTRO has issues with group content due to population, certainly for the likes of myself playing from New Zealand, my primetime the population so low. Hard to find a group.
    Endgame: No comment here have not ever been in endgame content for either. All my endgame time has been spent in World of Warcraft.
    Monetization: Agree - GW2 - But don't mind either tbh
    You missed one in my opinion, the User Interface - LOTRO slams GW2 down. A lot of the UI in LOTRO can be moved anywhere. Can move hotbars anywhere you like, it's great. There are addons that allow for different themes and enhancements to the existing UI.
    While I have more up there for GW2, LOTRO is the game I want to play more! :)
    Great vid Bright. Cya online sometime soon.

    • @arthnewslaind
      @arthnewslaind Год назад

      my agree and disagreement on ur comment
      - combat: agree - GW2 but disagree about amount of ablities to use, gw2 has, varied combat system = dodge mechanic, weapon swap on combat, skills are depend on weapon and it varied on each class like greatsword on guardian is totally different skill than greatsword on ranger or reaper, or warrior, or mesmer (mesmer used greatsword for long range style), underwater combat, also the elite specs. there are 3 elite specs for each class and 9 classes at the base game. so gw2 has 27 classes and each classes. it's become more complex when it comes to build tree for each class itself, every class has 3 style that can used at the same time, 5 from core and 3 elite. an each style has 12 passive option ability and while choose 6 at the same time, and about 32 option utility skill including elite specs while only can use 3 at same time, 7 healing skill, and 7 elite skill... the conclusion about combat in gw2 is, even someone has the same class, it'll be different depend on weapon and style, that he choose on the build panel.
      - leveling/world building:disagree - Gw2= there are some varied option for leveling in gw2, u can leveling by completing quest like basic mmorgp stuff, but in gw2 no need to talk to npc to do the quest, just walk to the quest area and do the quest. u can also gain amount of exp for lvling by completing other objective around the map like vista's, poi's, and hero challenge's or just discovering new area gives some exp, everything on the openworld gives exp. u can also doin personal story for leveling that unlock every 10 lvl. world building in gw2 is amazing and the best world than any other mmorpg, the dynamic event that organicly poop out around the map, even high lvl player still doin event at low lvl map because of the lvl scaling, no need to worry because everyone that participation on the event get the same loot as long they participated. that make gw2 openworld feels life, and the world itself is beautifull, one of the best design is on verdant brink that has massive vertical landscape
      - character immersion = Gw2 - from the first character creation, gw2 give the background option depend on every races that player choose, like human can choose where he come from streets, common folk, or noble family, then choose the characther between charm, dignity, or ferocity. and different it's affect on what class we choose, and what race we choose has different option. the personal story itself is the character journey from the beginning and continue on every expansion. and some of the story u can choose what path that u'll choose, like choosing the order organization and other decision that will affect the story
      Endgame: there are many things to do in gw2 end game

    Two big things you forgot to mention that are a turn off for a lot of people with GW2 is level scaling, and level boosting. I hate being downscaled and upscaled, it makes all that hard work feel pointless, similar to how WoW retail is. The level boosting, they just give you a free max level boost to any new player, whats the point? Just skips so much content and understanding of the game.

    LOTRO, hands down.
    Guild Wars 2 is a lot of fun, I'm enjoying exploring the world of Tyria and trying to 100% the map. The story questlines are interesting and the NPCs are funny. But the heart quests and events are only okay and the mounts are downright ugly. (Sorry raptor, you're helpful but so ugly)
    LOTRO has a huge variety of quests, lots of iconic characters as NPCs, so many areas to explore and love (or hate). Beyond the quests, I love the skirmishes, instances, festivals, the cosmetic system, oh and the mounts are pretty. Okay, so some of the mounts in LOTRO are ugly too. Can't get away from that, it seems.
    I guess it boils down to would I replay it? With LOTRO, it's no contest ... don't even ask how many characters I have because I don't know. I've played it so much over the past 14 years. Can I see myself doing the same thing with Guild Wars 2? Maybe once or twice, to explore the stories of different races, but beyond that? Probably not.
    Yeah, LOTRO is hands down winner for me.
