I used to see my mama doing tivaevae - she could do 4 full beautiful tivaevae for 1 week. It was done so well, and most families counted on her to make theirs. I miss those days where she could finish in few days. She from Manihiki but lived in Tahiti. She use to say "if a woman hasn't got a tivaevae, she isnt a woman. Or if she hasn't made one".... Mama has 4 daughters, 6 grand-daughters, 2 great grand daughters. We've all done tivaevae by her side and our mom's side.

I fell in love with what I was told was Hawaiian quilts. I have seen a website where I can buy patterns. They look like a lot of work and time. I also bought a book with patterns for cushions. I come from a small Caribbean Island called St.Vincent and the Grenadines. Capt. Bligh brought the breadfruit plant to the islands during the slave trade times and now this is the National fruit. I always wanted to make a ??Kapa with this pattern. Elizabeth Root is the lady who sells these pattern. But I like the idea of making a quilt the is based on the individual's story. PS. Our Calypso ( from while I was growing up) sound a lot like your music played on this video. So glad I found your videos.
