What type of train is that?

^ If this is the evening, it could be the northbound train number 90, the Palmetto which is going to NYC from Savannah, Georgia. Or it could be a Regional. A lot of the Regionals that come up from Virginia have baggage cars.

Ashland's street running dates back to the 1850s, when the RF&P first built north to the mouth of Accotink Creek, on the Potomac River. What was then basically the west side of town, has, over the years, become the heart of town, with the railroad in the middle of the street. Over the years, the RF&P, and later, CSX, have floated the idea of building a bypass. The problem is 2 fold. Where to put it, since Ashland had developed it's own kind of urban sprawl in the last 70 years or so. And the NIMBY factor. When they find a reasonably practical route for a bypass, the neighbors along the proposed right of way, scream bloody murder about the noise pollution and danger of grade crossings, ad infinitem. So the railroad is stuck with 69 mph, or higher speed limits on both sides of town, and a 25 mph speed limit going through town. Fun, yes? 😂

^ You seem to really know your stuff. I was just about to ask if there is a speed ordinance in Ashland cause trains go by so slow here but you've answered it. It's a straight track, so they should be going much much faster but the tracks are not cut off from where someone could just run right onto them. Why don't they just sequester off the tracks so trains can go faster?

@@rominn2184would be very difficult to go around any of the town as a randolph macon college is there and lots of homes and small businesses on both sides of the tracks for the whole trip thru town...

@@rominn2184interesting information of the history of how the small town has the tracks running thru the middle of it. Now it seems it is a feature of the town as well as for the randolph macon college next to the tracks and the small business store fronts along it, like having a unique attraction of the town.
