Another wacky commercial from the original Legend of Zelda. This one features a man running around apparently looking for Zelda. In his creepy look and voice, he is scared of all the enemies in the game. "A never ending adventure New for your Nintendo Entertainment System"
This guy makes Tingle look normal.
Makes Tingle look even boring
Ahahah. True!
Tingle is normal. XD
Yes
Makes Tingle look like fucking Darth Vador
It's hard nowadays to comprehend that this commercial was most people's introduction to one of the most famous and beloved video game franchises of all time.
Dre Chapman also the reason i never got the game
The weird thing? I had no idea what this commercial was about, but it made me want to play the game just so I could figure out wtf he was talking about.
It got me. This commercial is the reason I begged for it for Christmas.
@@eddyunger1419 This is how all hard-core adventure fans should appreciate their favorite games
I recently started a re-play of LoZ for the first time in, what, 33 years? Still love it. It made me want to see this commercial again. It really is very
In the 80's, they could just film mental patients screaming things vaguely associated with a product and call it a commercial.
finally~
Ironically it was better then many commercials today.
It really looks like they filmed an insane inmate in solitary confinement.
I love how he screams after saying "leevers". XD
As opposed to now where they just splatter a bunch of CGI or weird stuff together that has nothing to do with anything, attach the name of a product at the end and people have no idea what they just watched
Actually it's the other way around. They just named the princess and all the monsters after whatever this random guy screamed.
This is my favorite David Lynch film.
LOL
Hahaha I don't comment frequently, but this is glorious!
I fucking love david lynch and i am stoked to not be the only one!
i said this out loud before seeing this comment
he even looks like the eraserhead guy
He's got the Eraserhead hair.
I remember this commercial. It made no sense to me at 8 and at 34 still makes no sense
same age as you bro. back then i didnt even like the commerical. Even for kids it has such a wtf factor going on.
I'm in the same boat. I found it creepy as a kid and still do as an adult.
haha! i know right!
Nathan Justice ii
I also almost missed out on the game due to this commercial. I think I saw it on a display in a store and played it for a few minutes and was immediately impressed. All of the advertising for this game was terrible.
I still can't fathom what the hell they were thinking with this commercial.
I think Nintendo was going for a more comedic tone for this commercial, it's supposed to not make sense. It's just to make you laugh.
I'm pretty sure they were flying high on that CIA-purchased CRACK that Ollie North was smuggling in.
Bandicoot Films They failed miserably.
They only had, like, twelve bucks and some junkie who wandered in off the street. What were they to do?
I actually remember this commercial from when it first aired, because it was just soooo wierd.
"Hi I'm here to direct this commercial."
"So have you looked at the game?"
"No but I've got a bargain basement Robin Williams and a pound of crystal meth."
"You're hired."
It was the 80s, so it probably would have been cocaine rather than meth.
Lmao
seriously this commercial (and the other one, you know the one I am thinking of) actually delayed me buying it by a few years.
@@retroescapism2126 it makes it look like a bad horror game
John Kassir wad kind of a cheap Robin Williams knock-off.
Someone please let that poor man out of the basement.
Dying lol
It's been a five year journey, but you finally received your 100th like.
Welcome, boils and ghouls. Your old pal, the Cryptkeeper, here, and I've been killing time, playing my Nintendoom Enterslainment System. It has killer graphics, and the games are to die for. That reminds me, tonight's terror-filled tale is an atrocious anecdote I call, "The Legend of Zelda."
What's this from?
TheKhopesh It isn't from anything. It's a parody of something the Crypt Keeper would say on Tales from the Crypt. The crazy guy in this video is actor John Kassir, who also was the voice of the Crypt Keeper.
That's a perfect Cryptkeeper pastiche. :D
This sounds like something I'd come up with, awesome job.
I love that. You, sir, win the internet. I just found out this was him after booking him for a birthday Cameo video greeting for my wife, who once booked him as a guest to make announcements during October 2011 at the casino she once worked for. And, yes, he did it in The Crypt Keeper's voice. :)
Interestingly, she also booked Steven Yeun (Glen from The Walking Dead) that same year and, on a separate occasion, Linda Blair from The Exorcist.
This commercial is burned into my soul. 30 years later I still play it in my mind perfectly.
ZELDA!!
you chose your master well
WOOWOOWOOWOOWOO (screech) OCTOROKS!!
Now that's a true Zelda fan.
He just had a stroke
Fun fact: That guy is the actor who not only voiced the Crypt Keeper, but also voiced Buster Bunny in the last few episode of Tiny Toons.
John Kassir.
I thought that was him.
And dont forget he was in another HBO tv show while as the crypt keeper, that being the show 1st and 10
Thanks for clarifying. For some reason I thought it might be Charles Fleischer (the guy that voiced Roger Rabbit).
2 Fun Facts about this commercial:
1. This is John Kassir. Known actor / voice actor of the 80's. He famously did the voice of the Crypt keeper.
2. Robin William got interested in the Zelda games due to this commercial.
That's funny because he is sort of like a discount Robin Williams. Same sense of humor.
@@DrakusRecords More Peewee Herman than Robin Williams I'd say.
@@rodzandzthis guy is like what's going on in peewee basement
This could make the perfect anti-drug commercial. XD
Idk...he was really amusing himself
...or...is it the perfect PRO-drug commercial. 'cuase I want some of what he was smoking. But, maybe something like HALF a dose of what he had.
@@BrockLee3 my eyes are burning because he seems to use a discarded pop can as a smoking device.
Either spin you put on it, remains as delightfully 80s as all hell.
My cat's name is Zelda. This is what it feels like when I can't find my cat.
GAMETIME!
The Phoenix
Make your cat watch this video to see its reaction
@@revolvingworld2676 you can't be that cruel to an animal and expect it to not get insane
I hope you don't act like that in public.
complete with octoroks??
Replace "Zelda" with "Mario," and you'd have a Luigi's Mansion commercial. :P
Grasshopper Gaming
Underrated comment lol
But Luigi’s cowardice would actually make this work somehow
Is the name grasshopper gaming a reference to majoras mask like your pfp?
If I was immortal, and had to come up with a different Zelda commercial every day for infinity, I still don’t think I would ever think to create THIS.
That said, I think in order to understand why this worked at the time, one needs to understand the hype surrounding this game, and surrounding Nintendo in general during this time.
The commercial is Tingle having a mental breakdown shortly before he started dressing like Link.
I remember 1987 when this came on the TV! Wow!!!!
Was that the bite of 87!?
Well, excuuuuse me princess.
NICE JOB, HERO! >:3
SCHOOL OF SMASH
Oh man, that saying made that cartoon unwatchable. I hated when he said that. So damn annoying!
@@P1983sche Link always drove Zelda crazy in the cartoon.
Two facts about this commercial: 1. That guy is the voice of the Crypt Keeper from Tales from the Crypt. 2. This commercial was considered a huge success among the advertising community because no one had any idea what the fuck they were doing with video game advertising.
They sure didn't:) Lucky for them the games were so great they sold themselves. Nintendo's PR department probably thought they were genius's when they saw the numbers lol.
This commercial is the sole reason i had no interest in the game
He's also Mervis and Dunlap from CatDog.
So this is what Kramer did before Seinfeld...
this will always be my favourite commercial in the history of commercials
I have to wonder ow effective this commercial was. Because it doesn't make me want to play Zelda. It makes me want to play anything else.
Back when this game first came out, I never saw this commercial. I saw the one for Adventure of Link plenty of times, but what drew me to playing Zelda was word of mouth from kids on the schoolyard.
I saw it when it came out and lost all interest in the game. Decades later I finally saw the game itself and realized I would have liked the game if not for this crappy ad
Me and my brother would act all crazy after watching this commercial back in the 80s/90s MAN I'M 38 where did all the time go? 😣😣😣
EPIC BLASIAN yup I hear u there. I am the same age as u, and I would act like a nut with my sister when this came on lol.
Wicked Dick Of the West I'm 39 now 😢
EPIC BLASIAN so am I I just turned 39 on the 29th of January.
Wicked Dick Of the West 👍
EPIC BLASIAN 👍
according to wikipedia the same guy who was in this video was the same guy who played the crypt keeper from tales from the crypt and buster bunny from tiny toon adventures.
John Kassir is the one who starred in the commercial.
I remember trying to explain this commercial to my little brother. He though i was making it up.
This commercial made me want to buy the game when it came out and watching it again now it makes me want to play through it again lol
I 100% felt the opposite way when I saw it.
I know this is odd, but back in 1987, this commercial totally worked on me. I lusted after this game. So strange, based on hindsight.
gnussyflarkin I completely agree, this commercial was the reason we first tried Zelda. It is totally bizarre nowadays, but that is because we have better sources of information about video games now. Back then we had friends, commercials, the ads in comics, and of course eventually Nintendo Power.
This commercial did the important things it taught us the name of the game and it stood out.
I think for me it worked because it was so unlike other Nintendo game commercials. It made me think there was something very unique that I needed to check out.
Remember seeing this commercial when it was new. When I was a kid. Probably 7 or 8. It's wackiness is what made it memorable. That and the dude yelling "ZELDA!"
Yeah, I remember it too. Had no idea what was going on or what he was talking about, but it made me want to play the game!
It's like Tim & Eric went back in time and made this commercial.
Bargadiel He'd be saying, "SNUGGLER!" instead.
This taught me everything I know.
I come back to this video everytime I’m sad. It always does the trick.
And people criticize Japanese commercials
this commercial actually made me, at 7 years old, go out and buy the game for $40 at a Kay Bee toy store. I saved the money by mowing the lawn 4 times. but when they rung me up at the register, I didn't know they'd charge tax. so I had to beg my Dad for a few extra dollars to pay for it. for that month, as I was saving money, I kept hearing that guy yell "ZELDA!!!" in my head!
1987.
This commercial always kind of made me think the game was really intense and would drive you nuts.. and it made me want to play it.
the legend of zelda #1 is pretty quaint
This commercial is a testament to the game's quality...as in it's impressive the game managed to be as successful as it was when this is how they advertised it >.>
This guy is my hero
Thank you, Josh Jepson, for bringing this into my life.
you would think someone got out of their straightjacket
The 80's was a hell of a time. I remember seeing cardboard displays of this guy but with a sword and the box art shield. It made no sense.
I honestly think of this guy yelling "Zelda!!" a lot while playing Zelda.
Straight up, this commercial is why Link doesn't talk.
This commercial put me off playing Legend of Zelda when it first came out. Even as a kid, Stupid never sold me on anything. My friend down the street was the same way, but an act of morbid curiosity led him to rent it, and we were instantly hooked...
Never let David Lynch get his hands on Legend of zelda.
This is what happens to a person who is playing Zelda 1 for the entire day non stop without a map from the Internet.
😂😂 lucky i got a map.with mine in the 90s. Jesus Christ is the way
I called my brother an idiot for buying this game because all I knew about it was from what I saw in this annoying commercial. Surprisingly, the game actually turned out to be good.
Now this commercial I remember. The guy yelling ZELDA and the enemies names. The other commercial not soo much, which is a good thing. lol
1986: man vaguely screaming things zelda related
2019: dark cave, shots of an ancient corpse, eerie backwards messages
Don’t you think they are simular?
That's John Kassir in the commercial - who also voiced the Crypt Keeper in Tales From The Crypt.
Out of all the video game commercials from the 80's... This is the one i remember.
Over three decades later, I still remember this commercial. Jeez.
I didn't know Art Garfunkel was such a huge fan of Zelda.
He looks more like jack Nance.
Boy, Netflix really went with a weird angle for this series.
"Hey kids! Play Zelda, then end up in an asylum!"
Now THAT'S marketing.
Happy Zelda launch day everyone!!! Almost 40 years later!
0:16 Yeah, name the henchmen. That's why this game series is still going so long!
This is voice actor John Kassir way, way back in the day before he landed his best gig as the voice of The Crypt Keeper.
I like how the music gets funky around ‘Leevers’
I want to see this guy do a Mario commercial.
"Peach! Peach! Koopa Troopas! Spinies! Lakitu! Buzzy Beetles! PEACH!"
This was the sort of ad were you have to step back and ask yourself, "Why?" Somehow this just worked.
Why...
No idea. Still. no idea
no idea, but i think he called you zelda
Link they should have apologised to you maney maney years ago...
z
... because.
Is it wrong that this is how I imagine Link's voice sounding, like the guy in the commercial?
I don't think it's wrong...
Were people in the marketing industry in the 1980s just really really really dumb? I mean Mad Men makes it seem like these guys were brilliant. For a timeless classic, this commercial is truly embarrassing!
ridgewoodian : Commercial #1 is truly embarrassing. This one is just weird. This was a really good game but you'd never know that from the ad.
+ridgewoodian I think it's brilliant in how it gets your attention. I have absolutely no idea what I just saw. Or what it has to do with The Legend Of Zelda. But it got my attention.
+ridgewoodian Mad Men was set in the 60s...and as stupid as this commercial is, I'm sure it worked. It was of the variety that was just really weird. It grabbed your attention and made you watch. It was obnoxious and memorable.
I can tell you from experience, that as a 1st grader at the time, this made me beg my parents for this game until I got it. All things in context, my friend. I could probably write a blog post on why this commercial isn't nearly as bad as it looks.
Oh yeah and unless my imagination is going wild, there was a marketing poster that went with this commercial. I think you had to get it by buying some other product or going to see a movie or something. Ah... I can just barely recall. But the poster made it even more mysterious what the game was about and what was in it.
The game was so hard it drove him insane
Why didn't they say that in the commercial?
Can we just remember this is one of the best selling games on the NES,
some kid saw this and thought "Yeah I want this"
You know the ad agency was handed this and was saying…
What the hell is a Zelda?" "Oh, I think it's a Swedish wall plaster?" "Well, Max Headroom is in; just have him doing that shouting random words from the instruction book." "Yes, sir!" "We're brilliant."
That's John Kassir, the voice of the Crypt Keeper from Tales From the Crypt. He also played on another HBO show back in the day called First & Ten. But even as a kid I always thought this was a very strange commercial. In no way did it ever capture the feel of Zelda. He just looked like he was severely coked out or in desperate need of coke.
Yeah, but you got to give John credit for those voices he makes, even I can't recreate a voice like that. Can you?
+theamazingyoshi
No. Never claimed to be a voice actor. What's your point? Does his talent make the commercial any less strange to me?
They could've easily repurposed this as an anti-drug commercial.
I was able to get a clearer, higher quality version of this commercial. It is not nearly as dark now. More true to the original form.
Nice.
Respect the crypt keeper
I never forgot this commercial, so I guess it was effective from that standpoint.
And this is how you begin a legend
wikipedia
Since Nintendo did not have many products, it made only a few commercials a year, meaning the quality had to be phenomenal. The budget for a single commercial could reach US$5 million, easily four or five times more than most companies spent
John Kassir, voice of the Crypt Keeper
When I first saw this as a kid, I thought those creatures were different games.
So memorable as a kid. He put Zelda on your mind with his zany repeating of it. Made me intrigued and wanting to play it. Can’t wait for Tears of the Kingdom but it all started here
I remember wondering what in the hell I had just watched when I saw this as a kid, since it had almost nothing to do with the game. Of course back then NES was still a novelty and video games didn't have the marketing budgets like they do today. Little did we know how the platform would explode over the next few years. Anyway, as annoying as the commercial was, I guess it was pretty effective because I remember it clearly.
Pe-pe-pe-peahats?!!!?! O_O
Ya see, if Nintendo still had commercials like this, I would buy more of their games.
I swear these people that hits the actors told them to let loose on their tourettes
Classic! Loved this commercial.
I was six and and this commercial led me to add the NES games Octoroks, Tektites, Peahats, and Leevers to my Christmas wish list.
Vividly remember it on TV like it was yesterday and still say PEEPEE PEEHATS
I absolutely HATED this commercial when it first aired on TV when I was a small child. I didn't understand it and I found it annoying, but a few months later I was introduced to video games for the first time with none other than The Legend of Zelda. I was so blown away and inspired by it that I decided then, over 30 years ago, that I would devote my life to making video games and that's what I've been doing ever since.
What kind of games do you make?
Wait I looked at your channel and I love your videos with your grandma. I watched them a few months ago
Yeah, same with me, I hated this commercial and it made me not want the game. But then my friend brought it over and I played it. Been a huge Zelda fan ever since.
Whatever the reason for making a commercial like this, you can’t argue the success of the Zelda franchise.
Your reminder that the first ever Legend of Zelda commercial features the friggin Crypt Keeper playing a bargain basement Jim Carrey in a creepy basement ranting about "Tektites" and "Levers".
I remember when this commercial and the game were new (circa 1987?). A friend of mine was the first in the neighborhood to get the game, and summed it up with "Yeah the commercial is really stupid, but the game is actually pretty awesome!"
Yes. 1987.
Arguably the best Link incarnation
Great panel at LIRGE that went over the filming and disappointment of this commercial. Nintendo was told they booked a comedian and they were thinking it was going to be like a stand up routine or something along those lines.
The time when people who dont play games make commercials for games.
It's a miracle that zelda has gotten as far as it did with the commercials thats they made.
They could have had a clown, shooting confetti around. The game sold itself...
I don't why I am laughing at that
"I need a Zelda commercial"
"Best we can do is a dude on cocaine in a basement."
I remember this commercial! Believe it or not, it's the commercial that made me want zelda :)
yeah i was young, that's obvious.
I'll be like Johnny Arcade of Video Power, or Captain N, if you asked me personally.
Captain N ruined Simon Belmont.
It was decades before I understood this commercial. Like maybe twenty to twenty five years.
I was only 10 and I think I still said "what the hell" during this commercial.
"Here's a camera. We're locking you in this dank basement until you have a Legend of Zelda commercial we can air."
*two hours later*
"Well, looks like he went insane."
"Did he at least film something?"
"Kind of... fuck it, we have 30 seconds of dead air to fill."
Sounds legit.
"Dank Basement"
Well he does manage to get a few names in there.
His name is Josh Kassir and he voices the Crypt Keeper
I think this commercial aired around '85 or '86 when I was about 5 years old... This was shortly before I ever played Nintendo, and for some reason this commercial made me rage pretty hard and hate whatever they were selling. Then I actually played Zelda, fell absolutely in love with video games, and today I'm a game developer. Funny how things go.
Zelda came out in the states in 1987
You know the ad aganecy was like was handed this and saying: "What the hell's a Zelda?" "Uh, I think it's a Swedish wall plaster?" "Oh, well Max Headroom was in, lets have him do that while shouting words from the instruction book" "Yes sir! "We're brilliant"
Seriously, what is the idea behind this? "Renfield doesn't get 8-bit games, so he tries his high school improv on nobody"?
Easily one of the weirdest gaming commercials ever.
