All class. I've been watching for a few years now and two observations that keep occurring to me are your attention to detail and extremely fast reflexes. Thanks for another lesson.
I can’t take it, you are the Ted Williams of Fishing ! Sure does look like you’re standing in a river, where I have no clue. Each spring your videos top the year before leaving me astonished ! Thanks.
He chums his spots. They all do.
@@thehamptonsbutcher3786that might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever heard 😂
Haha ,hey chum you have that wrong!!
@@Flushing35 u guys are on his jock too tight home slice.
He’s a great fisherman for sure, but it’s mostly the spots you fish which will lead to your success, John fishes the best spots on the east coast. Knowing when to fish those spots make you great as well, which he does
I like in florida now, but I'm originally from NYC. I truly miss catching stripped bass!❤
When I watch you fishing, it’s like how easy it can be
As mainly a Smallmouth River Fisherman that looks like a Heluva lot of fun Skinner!! Thanks for the Videos.
Great explanation on the bucktail drift!
Thank you, John, for showing the reel speed and the pick ups once the bucktail hits the bottom. Since I couldn’t see the splash of your lure, I could only surmise where you casted, and where the strike came. Would it be possible to show an X on one cast and one hit occurred? Your videos are so educational. Thank you for sharing your years of knowledge with the fishing community.
WTG JS
You make it look easy !
God Bless 🙏
Awesome fishing John Skinner
Great video, as always, the bass fish are stack up on the rips and their nice size fish too , I hope, some day to go fluke fishing hopefully it will stop raining and warm up I love the bass but I really love the fluke .
Fishing with you today was very good
I was out the other day, a night into morning trip, it’s was a slow pick at night with only 3 fish but also had the biggest fish of the trip at 34”, than at first light they started goin nuts on top so threw a spook on and started catchin one after another, all high 20” fish with one other over 28, all very fat healthy fish on bait so small I couldn’t see it lol
That current really rips through that area. We've caught Stripers in the Chesapeake Bay on the bottom using that technique of bounce once or twice on the bottom, raise the rod and reel in slack and keep repeating. On the other side of that inlet is a point with a rip also.
Wow That water was moving
Wow that waters really moving there almost seems like a river.
My favorite notification 😅
John I was useing the tip of the rod like a compus needle against the shore line across the way and everytime it hits the white thing over there near the point WAMM love it buddy keep up the great work your friend Mike from nj 👍 question did you ever think on tagging a striper???
Great video..
I love tautog as table fare! But rockfish fillets rolled in beer batter with Old Bay I love. You mention you don't keep rockfish. I guess sea bass, fluke and sheepshead are so much better?
John you had mentioned that lamiglas carries the GSB skinner rod. Do you know of a few dealerships in the Long Island area? Thanks Bill
Finding a bottom that's weed free is what I find difficult.
Peconic Bay? Bring some scallops back to PI in the winter for me Skin
Scallops haven't been doing to well since around 2019. Hopefully they come back.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Im aware. If Southhold doesn’t have em they are scarce. I’ve paid 45 per lb some years. Worth it when they are good
Beginner. Learning. Humble (mostly). Would you use a split tail pork rind in this situation? Some guys at Jones Inlet are telling me to use'em.
Yes - split tail 5''.
I kinda miss when you used to use your other rods
Awesome. Why do you prefer that style bucktail to the smiling bill?
I really needed to get down and cut the current but wanted to keep the weight low enough that I could use medium gear.
Where's the current coming from? Are you near a marsh cut?
Outgoing from inlet he's standing on sand spit
Hi... kindly make side view video of your bucktail retreive..... it would mean a lot to viewers... thanks
I did that on the lead in to the video. I showed exactly what I'm doing with the reel.
@JohnSkinnerFishing Thanks... God may bless you..... you don't know how much we respect you for your great service of imparting and sharing voluntarily the fishing knowledge... I need to ask two things which were a sort of confusion...
1. in your book you referred gliding bucktail along the bottom with occasional twitching on sany beaches with slow to moderate retreive... I see your rod tip dipping and not twitching upwards... I wonder if you could kindly advise exactly what happens there in retreive sequence.
2. On jetties... for weights less than 2 ounces.... you told I cast.. let the bucktail settle a bit and then start slow retreive..... I want to ask can you give indicators as how long to wait before starting retreive... I mean do you tap bottom to get the retreive start or what to specifically do there. Thanks once again and your kind guidance to above two points will be highly appreciated.
Great video. Do you get a long cast with that lure?
It casts pretty well for a bucktail, which are not considered great distance lures.
Man I have hooks that size and that looks like my 3/16 oz weighted hook
When it comes to fishing small inlets like this (relative to ocean inlets) do you prefer incoming or outgoing? Or it does not matter as long as there is current.
Are there other lures that would work in this situation? Also, would that reel compare in size to say a Penn spinfisher 3500 or smaller.
I live right in matittuck is there any spots you'd recommend near me I could walk into water and fish?
Another great video! Are you standing on the edge of the rip? As current is running between your legs. Thanks
Yes - rip edge.
I hear biologist talk about gloom and doom with bass population which they claim is progressively getting worse. You wouldnt know that by watching John, which is backed up by my catch records and trends which is the exact opposite of gloom and doom.
i was out all day on the long island sound by wading river and not a single bite had 2 other rods out for porgy also nothing at all.
Hey John, you know that brown seaweed that clings to the rocks you stand on? Is that to you an indicator of bass presence or potential presence?
It's meaningless to me.
I would love to fish with you
Hey John, was this on the incoming in to the bay or outgoing to the ocean.
Tom it's outgoing from inlet into bay secret spot can't tell you where.
And it looks like you're standing in a river with the current. Is that tide flow?
Tidal current.
Planing on any inlet fishing this season?
Maybe. Tomorrow sure looks like a winner.
went every day this past week all over the island. not a single fish. not sure if its a skill issue or if other people have been experiencing this. i have been going to the most premier spots on the island
same here just got home spent all day in the rain.
I notice you don't swim the bucktail like every other videos. You just cast, let it sink to bottom, did two cranks then wait?
That's because I'm stationary with a fast current.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing is there anyways you can tell when one should swim the Bucktail at the bottom vs just doing two cranks then stop?
Send me this rod!!
How deep is the water at the end of the cast? 1 1/2 oz is pretty heavy from shore
Nvm you answered it at around 5 min lol
is this a scented grub?
Looks like an uncle Josh fork tail

Nice videos. I will be fishing for Fluke and slot strippers this season. I am new and asked for a Skinner rod for a Mother’s Day present but When we got to Dick’s we became overwhelmed with the choices. So I ask; Is there one rod that will jig and bounce for legal fluke and also reel in slot stripers?
Absolutely this rod. bit.ly/3QsR6ch It's the rod I use for fluke in the ocean and Peconic Bay, but also the rod I use in Plum Gut for big stripers.
make sure you get the right rod you have spinning reels and bait casting reels. the guides on the rod are much smaller on a casting rod vs spinning rod. if your new stay away from bait casting rods and reels. look up some videos on youtube.
I don't know why you would say that about casting vs spinning. There is much better depth control with a baitcaster, especially if the reel has a thumb bar or flipping switch. I use a baitcaster 95% of the time for fluke, and most of the time for larger bass.
This link led me to the blue casting rod. That is probably where I am confused, because I also like bait caster reels. Are you suggesting that I should attach a Bait caster reel to the this casting rod? That would make me happy. I just didn’t know that if people do that.
I think I understand the confusion. These rods labeled "casting" as opposed to "spinning", are really not used to cast with. They are meant for up and down boat or kayak fishing. Actual casting is done with a spinning rod. It's the way rod manufacturers label stuff, and I see how it can confuse. "Conventional" would probably be a better way to list it, but this is rarely done with these lighter rods. FWIW, I use baitcaster reels for fluking, but never actually cast them.
Yeah internet nonsense
“If you’re catching don’t change what you’re doing”?? I’ve been watching you fish for YEARS and hundreds of times I’ve seen you “catching” and then just scoot away and motor off to do something different. I don’t get it…it’s extremely unrealistic to expect to “catch” every sing cast or most times, every ten minutes for the majority of anglers.
