    My dad Doug Digby was a life member been going over there and away for 55 years,and when the restuarant was built they named one of the rooms the digby suite..which was a nice touch,i myself went over there on and off in the seventies to watch the games,then late seventies and early eighties i was more on the social side i.e darts team member plus pool on a friday and saturday,sunday afternoon etc etc...the bar was run by steve and jan.steve was a ex player..stevie goodwyn.my dad passed away in 2002 just as well as he would of gone mental with the club's decline.p.s me and my wife had our wedding reception there in 1986...cheers steve,and cheers dad as he took care of the drinks.

    I am an Os, Orient (now Leyton Orient again) fan, as a kid in the late 60's and 70s growing up in East London, my grandad used to take me to Brisbane Rd. If the Orient were away we would often go to see Leyton WIngate Fc on Lea Bridge Rd as my Grandad lived just a short walk over the road. Also my mates parents ran the Hare & Hounds pub next door to the ground and I remember watching the game from the toilet roof next door by climbing out of his bedroom window.
    Shame to see the old club gone and ground lying abandoned!

      My uncle mick and Auntie Brenda used to run the Hare & Hounds for a couple of years during the 80s. I had some good times in there as a kid.

    Really sad! I was an avid Leyton-Wingate supporter between 1984-86 having moved into the area from Manchester. Absolutely loved the club and all the people associated with it and was fortunate enough to see them win promotion as well as go all the way to the FA Cup 1st Round proper when 500 fans went to see us play at Swansea City. Although I've watched Salford City for many years now - having returned back to my native North West - I'll never ever forget the fantastic times I had living in Walthamstow but supporting Leyton - not the Avenue!!

      If you ever go to London Visit Wingate & Finchley. When Wingate and Leyton split, Wingate joined Finchley fc and they are now in the 7th division

    A new petition is now going around to save this club . Leyton has definitely changed over the past 10 years . But has built a character which charters for artists musicians and athletes . Recent openings of Patchworks (Blondies) / Ive Farm ( football/ hockey pitches) / Revamped Hare & Hounds / Jubilee park reconstruction / Hackney Marshes clean up . The list continues ! This club can survive and add to this . As a football enthusiast and football coach and local parent I am behind any petition and launch to rebuild this. If it starts with MP discussions general word of mouth , anything to keep hope for this I will be here to support it . Let’s bring this club back to where it belongs 🙏🏻💪🏻⚽️

    Watched many many games on a Sunday morning here in the early to mid 1970s, three or four of us attended the games regularly. Shame to see the ground like it is now, fond memories of getting the ball out of the ditch behind the goal on the left as you look onto the Pitch....happy days as a 12-14 year old

    Thank you - this is very good.
    The club that Leyton Wingate developed from once played at Leyton Stadium, where Leyton Orient now play, they have a wonderful history and were once one of the leading English Amateur Clubs along with such as Walthamstow Avenue, Corinthian Casuals, both from "down south" and the London Area, another that comes to mind is Blyth Spartans from the North East of England.
    In the Wikipedia article it reports claims to be "the second oldest existing club in Greater London, after Cray Wanderers' and to have formed in 1868.
    en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leyton_F.C.

    • @spen666
      @spen666 8 лет назад +3

      Blyth Spartans were not an amateur club. They have been a semi -professional outfit for the vast majority of their lifetime

    • @tolkny
      @tolkny 8 лет назад

      Thanks for the correction I had assumed them to have always been an amateur club as that was how I remembered them in their "middle years" - but I now realise the northern amateur club I was in fact thinking about was Bishop Auckland, but again I know of them from the 60s & 70s era - so possibly they may also have been professional in earlier years.
      I realise that in fact association football leagues were particularly strong in the north of England where of course the Football League was also strong from the outset.
      So my mistake - Bishop Auckland was my northern club I had in mind - now I await further correcting responses - maybe.

    Very interesting video. I used to go to the this ground week in, week out in the early 1980's to watch Leyton Wingate and the Hackney & Leyton Sunday League (I was the ballboy!). It brings back lots of memories.I remember the Morris Minor garage and of course the Hare and Hounds.Speaking to a gentleman at a Dulwich Hamlet match last season, I heard they had fallen on hardtimes.

    It is a very historic ground with football having been played there since the 1870s. The first F A cup winners, Wanderers played some of their games there. I watched Leyton in the 1960s particularly the mid 1960s when they had a very good side. All very sad.

    Sorry Steve, but I think you're looking back with rose tinted specs. No one supported the Leyton founded in 1997. They had by far the lowest support levels in their level of football. No one liked them, and were a horrible club.
    The plaque you mention was stolen from Leyton Pennant F.C.. Costas broke in and stole it from their ground.
