Woodturning: Wind-blown Sycamore

- No, it wasn't blown down by the wind - but the picture I paint on the vase is of a tree with its leaves blowing off in the autumn wind. This tall vase is made from a piece of fresh sycamore (down only about four months), around eight inches in diameter (20.3 cm) and about 16 inches (40.6cm) in length. The finished vase is a maximum of four inches in diameter (100mm) and 12 inches tall (30.5cm). It is hollowed using a 5/8" (16mm) ring tool.

Round of applause for work on this beauty Rick!👍👍👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏😁
Thanks for watching, Alan.
As a relatively new Woodturner I really appreciate the close camera and the different angles. I am pleased that I stumbled across your Chanel.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Peter. I love doing the close-up camera work.
Rick, for a non painter I think you did a wonderful job! 👍🇺🇸
Thank you, Cortland.
You say you don’t paint??!! Well, you can’t say that anymore, Rick. That is bloody gorgeous! Awesome job, my friend. 👏👏👏👏
Thanks much, Gord!
14:20 I haven't seen anyone else use this type of cutter, thank you for showing it!
Yes, that's the Sorby Texturing Tool. It can cut some pretty interesting patterns.
You did pretty well for non painter great looking vase Rick great job
Thank you, Rich. My next attempt may be painting a house. :-)
Rick you have done a really nice job 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks for watching, Douglas.
Turned out great, Rick!
Thank you, Billy. Always nice to hear from you.
Nice job with the tree! Bob Ross would be proud!
Thank you, Hodge. I've seen all the Bob Ross shows! And I only make happy little accidents!
Rick, that is a wonderful piece you made there, I think it is heads above the rest ! And the tree ? Looks like the sycamore at the foot of my driveway. Good job all around sir, thank you🙏 Stay safe. -Mike😷
Thanks, Mike!
Happy little tree. 🎨
LOL! Thanks for watching, KK.
That's really nice Rick! You're gonna give me a heart attack with your explosions! Due to being hard of hearing I turn the sound up to hear you talk!!!! BANG back lol. Thanks for another great video
Oops - it’s not my intention to take you out! Here’s a tip - I only put explosions in the intro to the video. Thanks for risking your life watching my videos, Vickie. :-)
@@RickTurnsWoodturning okay, if I can "remember" lol
CRIMINY SAKES!!!!!!! You nearly gave me a heart attack!!!! 😲 😆
Now that my heart has finally slowed to my normal beat, what a gorgeous vase. You did an awesome job of painting on your wind blown tree. Beautiful, particularly for someone who said he does not paint. Stay safe and well. 😺❤
LOL! Thanks for watching and for your comments, Joalla.
Great Job Rick!..👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks for watching, Mike.
Well done!! Turned out beautiful!
Thanks for watching, Silent.
I like it a lot! Very well done with the paintwork.
The gloss of the polyurethane finishes it off well.
Frank.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Frank.
Hi Rick... that bowl is beautiful... I love the warm colours of the wood and the autumnal colours of your very impressive painting... great entertaining video as always...take care ...all the best.....Andy

Beautiful piece of work!!
Thanks for watching, Josh.
Nice piece.
Thanks for watching, Murphy.
It's a great work, my friend!!! You're an artist! Take care.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Mauro. Do you remember, 5-6 years ago, that you were one of the first people who ever commented on one of my videos? Stay safe and Merry Christmas!
That shop made ring tool is the cat's meow!
Yes, it is. You can also use it to beat cats, but I wouldn't recommend it for that. Thanks for watching, Lewis.
Outstanding looking vase Rick , love the painting mate ,well done !
Cheers, Bram
Thanks for watching and commenting, Bram.
Very cool Rick and your painting is fantastic. I would need a paint by number set to do that plus by the time I finished all he leaves would have grown back.
Your termite tool worked great and you seem to have mastered how to use it.
I made a set of those calipers and I call them my Rick Turns caliper because that is where I first saw them.
Great video my friend,
Gary
Cool! I have a tool named after me! Thanks for watching and for your comments, Gary.
That’s a very Beautiful vase Rick I love the tree ya painted on it Very nice painting , I was visualizing that sitting in my living room, Enjoyed the video That explosion 💥 made me jump a little bit at the beginning 😄 I had on my headphones 🎧 .
Thanks for watching and for your comments, Kimsey.
Dang Rick, who told you you can't paint? Great job!
Thank you, Snakebait!
Looks awesome
Thank you, Chris.
I'm glad to see someone else gets those "Whoa, what was that?" catches when hollowing. :)
I get a lot of those! Thanks for watching and commenting, Bill.
That looks great, Rick! But I expected nothing less. 👍🏻 Mike
Thanks for watching and commenting, Mike.
Beautiful!!!!
Thank you, Billy.
Dang! A regular Bob Ross! 🤣 Nice work !
Yes! I've watched all the Bob Ross shows! And I never make mistakes, only happy little accidents! Thanks for watching, Kennett.
Nice for someone who doesn’t paint. That really came beautiful. I hope to see more like this. Take care Rick and stay safe.
Thanks for watching, Dan. I plan to do more. I really like adding color to my turnings. Most of the wood I have isn't all that dramatic.
Very nice job 👍
Thanks for watching, John.
Looks great!
Thanks much, Chips!
Nice work,👍👍
Thanks for watching, Gao.
Very nice!
Thanks for watching, MH.
Nice Rick 😁👍🏼👏
Thanks for watching, Japie.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning the pleasure is mine 😁👍🏼
Doesn't it feel good to get such a long piece into balance! That vase came out beautiful Rick! Big 👍
Thank you, Turner.
I love it, Rick! You are an arTISTE'!
Phil
Thank you, Phil. I guess I get to wear a beret now, right?
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Absolutely and I want to see it in the next video, Rick! LOL!
That is beautiful Rick! I'd give it a go but I can't paint haha
Thanks for watching and commenting, Ian.
Very nice turn, Rick. You might want to invest in a couple soft bean bags/sand bags to keep your work from moving around while you paint or burn. I find them very handy, and better than trying to use a clamping system.
Now that's a good idea! I hadn't thought of doing that, but it make things easier on the workbench. Thanks for the suggestion, Valerie.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Anytime. Glad to share. Small offset to all work you do here.
Great job! I love it! For someone who can’t paint you did a wonderful job!
Thanks much, Redhead.
That came out great. Nice job painting the tree and leaves.
Thanks for watching and commenting, Chris.
Brilliant, Rick! The design really sets it off!
Thanks much, Shaun!
magnifico trabajo amigo...enhorabuena.
Thanks for watching, Antonio.
Really beautiful ...
Thanks for sharing🙏
Thank you, Kerajinan.
Really nice, Rick. I especially like your use of a "tool camera" which shows the cutting edge and action better than most other approaches.
Thanks for watching and for your comments, Tom. I try to make my videos show things a little different that what you usually see in woodturning videos. And it's fun doing it that way!
Looks great, Rick. If you hadn't told us it was freehand, we wouldn't know. I also saw some really nice grain in that wood. Stay safe and well.
Bill
Thanks much for watching, Bill.
Beautiful work Rick! The grain pattern is really nice!
Thanks for watching, Woody.
Awesome
Thanks for watching, Roberts.
I love it, great job! So gorgeous.
Thank you, Margaret.
top notch!!
Thanks much for watching, Luie.
Hi Rick. This came out very nice. Even though you say you “do not paint”, I have the feeling that you have done some painting/drawing before this.
I have tried but never succeeded! I watched Bob Ross for years, and tried his techniques several times, but I didn’t try long enough and never got good at it. Thanks for watching, Sigurdur.
Love the painting! Nice job 👍
Thank you, Bray. It turned out pretty good. However, I'm leaning back towards outlining with the woodburner, then coloring.
Looking really good!!
Thanks for watching, Ralph.
What a lovely Autumn vase Rick, I am starting to be swayed by that termite tool....Christmas ? :) Keep well, Rob
Thank you, Rob!
Bravo très jolie Rick 👍
Merci beaucoup d'avoir regardé, Denis. (Traduction par Google Translate, j'espère que cela a du sens)
Great skill shown there, again. 👊🏻💪🏻
Thank you, John.
Hi Rick, That is gorgeous!!! I have to agree with Gord as well. If that is not being able to paint then I don't know what being able to paint would look like. The ceiling of the Cysteine Chapel possibly? Take care Rick. Cheers, Huw
LOL! Thanks for watching and commenting, Huw.
I'm tempted to get a termite cutter, but the thing looks rather scary. How bad do things get if it catches? Wonderful final look of the vase!
I've been using for a month or two now, and in that whole time, I've only gotten one catch, and that was when I deliberately caused it to show what happens when holding the ring in the wrong position. It wasn't a bad catch - I've had worse using a scraper before (much to my shame!). I think it's a great tool, especially for hollowing. I'll be using it in my next video, to turn a bowl or perhaps a platter, to hollow the inside of the piece instead of using a bowl gouge. I think the ring tool will perform admirably there too, but we'll see. Thanks for watching, Ray.
Perhaps a Pair . Maybe number two from Beech ?
Thanks for watching, Mike.
Exselent
Thanks for watching, Hugo.
Nice, I can see that the rest is handy. You need a companion work with the neighborhood kid and a rake :)
Thanks for watching and commenting, GC.
Really quite beautiful. I have a Sycamore tree that my son planted when he was 15. I keep thinking if a brand falls off I will dry it and try my hand at turning it on my husband lathe for my son. I might be able to get a dowel out of it. Lol is it hard to turn??
It's not hard to turn, unless you're careless like me! Sycamore is a beautiful wood - I was lucky enough to get a half dozen sycamore logs recently. I've still got a few to work on. Thanks for watching, Teddie.
A trick to make the vase waterproof. After all the sanding is done, fill the inside with polyurethane and let it sit for about 20 minutes. Pour the poly out, hang the vase upside down and allow poly to fully dry (I allow 24 hours). Look at the vase and see if any poly leaked out to the outside. these are cracks that the poly leaked out of and need to be glued. Scuff up the inside of vase with 220 and repeat process of filling vase with poly waiting 20 minutes and dumping out and hang upside down to dry. Scuff one more time and repeat (a total of 3 times) Take vase in house and allow to sit a few days to acclimate to the temperature and humidity, fold up some paper towels and put them in a bowl. Fill the vase with water and set vase in the bowl and watch it closely for the first few hours for leaks. Fix any leaks with CA glue, test again with water and you can let it set for however long you feel satisfied that it's not gonna leak. Then you can proceed to finish the vase as intended.
That's a good idea, Curty. I'd never really considered how to make the vase functional like that. Thanks for the suggestion!
Thank you, Rick. I see the heartwood is solid all the way through. No pith? Is pith only in some trees?
Aha. I asked before the end of the video. You mention pith right at the end.
As far as I know, all tree species have a pith. Certainly every piece of wood I’ve turned has had a pith, which usually has to be excluded from the turning. This one definitely had a pith in it. Most of it got removed when I hollowed out the vase. But the bottom still contains the pith. However, I made the bottom fairly thin and then soaked it in thin CA glue, inside and out. So far, that seems to have worked - no splitting.
Is there anything you can't do Rick! Nice job. By the way. I bought the Delta. Put it together. Runs true and fine. I think the reeves drives growl a little, but I hear that from others who use this type of drive. I think the low speed is 350 or 400 I do not have a way to tell. This is much better than some of the brand new cheaper models that won't go below 600. Thanks for you advice.
Thanks for watching, Frank. I bet you'll enjoy that new lathe!
How is that ring tool sharpened?
See my earlier video on the ring tool (ruclips.net/video/kfoLDPib79o/видео.html), at about 18 minutes in. Oneway sells a cone shaped stone for sharpening. It is used in a router or some type of high rpm rotary tool, like a Dremel. It’s quite easy and quick to sharpen.
That is 2 Bam Bam or is that Boom Boom
I'll go for "Bam Bam" - I loved the Flintstones! Thanks for watching, Ron.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning yes the flintstones rock!!
If you placed a camera like this one www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07C9C6P5D/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 on the end of your termite gouge, you would be able to see what's going on inside the vase.
Yes, I tried three different inspection cameras like that. I wasn’t pleased with their performance. Each claimed to take full HD, but none actually did. I have my eye on one that apparently really does full HD, but I haven’t decided yet to spend the big bucks on it (well, it’s about $90). I would be able to get really get close-ups of the cutting action, plus I’d be able to shoot way down inside a vase or hollow form, and that would be cool. Thanks for the suggestion, Manny.
@@RickTurnsWoodturning Neat! I hope it works!
