7:00 i paid to go to art school on recommendation to get a foothold in the tattoo industry and begin my tattooing career. Our classes where claywork and knitting. Art school is equal parts fever dream & pure scam
There’s nothing wrong with learning those things but to pay so much is ridiculous. Art schools should be something people can pay per hour to attend for the benefit of developing their skills, not necessarily for a degree. A watercolour class for x amount, pottery for x amount etc would be far better

I remember my interview process absolutely dripping in sweat because I showed them my portfolio, my own tattoo designs, portraits, entire scenes, stencils, and talked about how i did work experience in a tattoo shop already and know how to manage and clean all the equipment. They where extremely disappointed and didn't like anything I showed them and made a big deal out of how it's expected that you just show them your grades and have a conversation. I was there to do art. I was there to start my career. They where useless. They hated me. There was a female in my class who also wanted to be a tattoo artist. They loved her. It's all these years later I realise they just didn't like me because I'm a dude who wasnt a little twink who enjoyed knitting. There is a huge mix of style and skill but anyone can be selected. If you are selected, your work gets a small space on the wall. Meanwhile, last year, there was an entire months-long exhibition there, that took up most of the Academy, where only one artists work was shown…… Marina Abramovich! With her blood magic and naked art rubbish! (I suppose being friends with Jacob Rothschild is more important than your brush stroke skill)
