    The USA Shop is NOT a Custom Shop, and they are not the "creme de la creme" of ESP. The USA shop lets you choose tops and finishes. That's it, so not more "custom" than a Core PRS. No choice when it comes to fret size or fret material, radius, scale length, different woods, hardware, knob placement, pickups config etc. And definitely not headstock shapes, type of neck joint (the Custom Shop offers at least 5 different bolt-on styles) or body shapes.
    The top of the ESP tree would be the guitars out of the ACTUAL ESP Custom Shop in Tokyo, so either a Custom order OR an ESP Original Series for set specs. These guys are still excited about Made In USA as if it's 1995.

    • @greekfreak1980
      @greekfreak1980 3 года назад

      Preach it!
      The Horizon II model,doesn´t even have the option to choose between hardtail and a Floyd,it only comes with hardtail,when the E-II Made in Japan production Series offers different models with either type of bridge,to choose from.
      I have no idea,why somebody would drop 5-8K on a pseudo-custom shop ESP,when you can get the real japanese custom shop for that money,with all the customisation options.Not to mention,you could get a Mayones custom shop for that price or get a Kiesel for far less,if you want Made in USA.

    I don't know why ESP would have their 'top end' guitars built in the USA. I realize that ESP custom shops still exist in Japan, but personally, when I want an ESP, I want it to be built in JAPAN. I own 2 ESP E-ll ECLIPSE's, specifically for that reason. I worked for over 25 years at a Toyota automobile plant, so I am WELL AWARE of the Japanese work ethic, and their commitment to quality. Although I am certain the guitars built in the USA for ESP are top notch, I want ESP to be built by Japanese craftsman, in Japan.

    • @felinekaiju4517
      @felinekaiju4517 Год назад

      The USA shop isn't a custom shop and they themselves state that. You have a few finishes and tops to choose from, a few pickup brands and pickups plus hardware colour choices. It's kept limited for choices and configuration so that you have to go to the JPN branch.

    A 4k £ guitar with a sensational finish, from arguably the best custom shop out there, has black PLASTIC pickups... I mean EMG does way better looking covers what the f ESP ?? :)

    • @johnnewton1830
      @johnnewton1830 4 года назад +5

      Pickup covers are the customers choice. In fact wood, color, finish, hardware, pickups, etc. are all picked by the customer then the guitar is built to order. Now the US shop does have limited options compared to the Japan shop where you could pretty much ask for anything, even sculpted bodies to your design, and they will make it no matter how crazy. For that reason ESP doesn't call the US shop a custom shop only the Japan shop despite what the guys in the video are saying.

    • @TheChicagoTodd
      @TheChicagoTodd 4 года назад

      @@TheChicagoTodd Oh yeah, fantastic guitars. I own a USA M-III myself.

    • @dreammachine86
      @dreammachine86 Год назад

      @@johnnewton1830 Yeah it's interesting that ESP have decided to open up the USA 'select shop' as they seem to call it. A great idea for US customers who can get their built-to-order guitars quicker and I suppose it appeals to that type of customer who appreciates something being built locally in the US, especially items that are premium and handcrafted like these ESP USA models. However I do think the prices are quite high considering the limited choices.
      I've had a look at some of the combinations on the online configurator, and some of them look absolutely fantastic but on some others it just feels as if one or two little changes would make a huge difference but you can't do it. E.g. you can select a roasted maple neck but not for the fingerboard. You can have the headstock in natural finish but if the roasted neck has been chosen then it looks like a weird mixup of the darker roasted maple on the headstock and then the brighter regular maple on the fingerboard - and then different looking maple again for the top wood if chosen. Same kinda thing with pickups - you can choose Fishmans now, but the Moderns are only wired for the voice change, no coil split available. I got my first Fishman loaded guitar recently, and it has the coil split too - and that's a £600 guitar (Cort KX507). If I was spending more than 5x and the guitar is built to order then I would want to be able to ask for some simple customisations to my own taste but you can't do that. Whereas a company like Kiesel would let me do that. I think it's completely fair for the USA models to be evenly between the price of the E-II and full Japan custom shop models but they aren't, they are right on the edge of the latter, and some combinations put the price even higher than the Original Series which are essentially Japan custom shop models pre-specced by the ESP. Clearly there are customers that are fine with the USA prices though so that 'handcrafted in the US' appeal must pay off.
      Maybe ESP endorsee artists may be able to get USA shop models with some customisations though? And whilst they do seem to be adding more options frequently, if I were spending that cash I'd prefer to go for the full Japanese custom shop. I suppose one other benefit of the USA shop though is that by having a limited selection it can be easier to get an idea of what would go together well i.e. you can instantly see that a purple burst over a quilted maple top on a Viper shape with gold hardware looks amazing thanks to the render on the configurator. Going for a Japanese custom shop order could cause a bit of 'options paralysis' where there is so much you can do that you either need to be an expert player that know exactly what they want for their playing style (and as a beginner who's been playing a couple years only, I'd have no idea what to choose for neck shapes/fingerboard radius/string spacing/fret size and stuff like that as I haven't played enough guitars with varying specs to know what is the absolutely most comfortable setup for me), or take the risk of potentially picking stuff that isn't ideal together, and without the advance preview of the USA shop for the visual aspect (I believe the Japanese custom shop does sketch out the customer's design before the build though so maybe they can go for final approval or make changes at that stage if necessary).
      Personally I wonder how often the Japanese custom shop gets orders for stuff on the level of the ESP Exhibition Limited guitars. Where they truly are works of art with custom inlays, exotic woods, hardware manufactured in house specifically for those models etc. I hope one day I can approach ESP with a few custom shop orders of my own - I'd love an infinity mirror guitar in a Phoenix shape with a programmable LED controller so you could have all sorts of cool gradient effects in the mirror part. And I'm sure that's just the kind of project that their master luthiers would love to have a go it (if I had the $10,000 or so I imagine it would cost...as those aforementioned Exhibition models are around that level and sometimes even higher).
