      @garycase1790…. I think you are very wise to continue doing what you enjoy despite the inevitabilities of aging. I am just shy of 60, a wife, mother and grandma. And I still get out and camp in our woods and if that’s not possible I’m quite happy to do the same in our backyard. This channel keeps me inspired and learning new things. Merry Christmas to you! Interesting mods on that ruck brother...I have an old M1952 and often thought about doing some kind of mod to the thing...their frames are not the friendliest to lug around...looked to be a mite soggy on this one amigo...thanks for taking us along...woods

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  Месяц назад +1

      @@MTwoodsrunner Thanks Woods! Man, I love that old steel frame, but it is built for someone about 6” shorter than myself. The mods were very simple with a speedy stitch. Piece of aluminum and some 1.5” webbing to make a pocket at the bottom and a sleeve at the top. Sit pad tucked between aluminum and back. Stitched an ALiCE kidney belt on and shaped the aluminum to curve of my back. Carrying is night and day to what it was. Probably cannot handle the heavier loads the steel frame could, but this is very comfortable to carry now.

I have almost the same ruck, (not the one he carried, but he must've purchased it post WW2) but the middle compartment has a leather strap rather than a zipper. British army basha, dependable piece of kit. It's what I use, my very basic kit being the British army basha, Savotta roll mat, British army bivi bag, wool blanket and long woolmix coat. (Serves as a second blanket)

    • @EnduranceRoom
      @EnduranceRoom  Месяц назад +1

      @@mallyredfearn6834 They are really nice tarps. I need to spend some more time with it, getting the feel for different setups. I have been favoring A Frames lately. What setups do you like to run with your basha?
      A good bivvy and some wool is a great way to go. I have a wool greatcoat, but I noticed it is getting a little tight around the shoulders. Have a good one and Merry Christmas

    • @mallyredfearn6834
      @mallyredfearn6834 Месяц назад

      @EnduranceRoom They're great with regard to longevity, though being slightly smaller, yet heavier than a 3×3 DD tarp, they take a bit of getting used to.
      I'm 65 now, so I do struggle with some of the very low profile setups commonly associated with these, though I'll use them if I need to.
      I'm in the uk, where it's almost always windy and we get more than our fair share of rain; so, while I'll always prefer a lean-to if I can get away with it, it will normally be a choice of a ploughpoint or a flying A frame. This is why the bivi bag is so important for me.
      The woolmix coat is a lined, quite thick cromby style, 60% wool, 40% polyester. It sheds water really well and comes just below my knees. It's well oversized to allow for layers. I use a US military poncho over this. I know I could use the poncho as a shelter and dispense with the basha, but as I say, I'm getting on in age, lol, so need that bit extra area.
      In winter, I can add to this a Softie suit. The trousers get used quite often. The jacket I've generally just used as another layer over me. Works very well.
      There's a tutorial I've looked up for you by a bloke called Jim Bob on RUclips. Give that a look.
      All the best to you and hope you enjoy a wonderful Christmas in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ.
