    Ceylon cinnamon is native to just one region of the world. And producing it requires hours of delicate work. Even the most skilled workers can make only a few pounds of quills a day. One pound of cinnamon quills can cost $27. But not all spices labeled "cinnamon" are the Ceylon variety. Many in the Western market are actually cheaper types of cinnamon called cassia. So what makes Ceylon cinnamon so favorable? And why is it so expensive?

    • @HirunKarunaratne
      @HirunKarunaratne Год назад

      If I remember correctly, the US is the only country that allows both Cassia and Cinnamon to be labeled as cinnamon, even though they differ significantly in health benefits, flavour, and smell. The best cinnamon grows in Sri Lanka, formerly known as Ceylon. So, if you're considering buying cinnamon, which I highly recommend for its health benefits, make sure to choose Ceylon cinnamon.

    Sometimes the cinnamon sticks we get taste like bark. There is barely any flavor at all. But the next one from the same packet will be so spicy that it will make your mouth sting like crazy. Is this because they are slipping in some of the cassia variety or is it just some other tree bark completely that isn't even cinnamon?

      It's very easy to tell the difference between true (Ceylon) cinnamon and cassia cinnamon; the former is light brown, thin, and delicate, whereas the latter is redder in color and much thicker and harder. Most people in the U.S. may never have seen or used Ceylon cinnamon in their lives, and I order my Ceylon cinnamon via mail order.

      4:50 Cassia cinnamon has stronger fragrant; in your case, the *plain bark* is actually the Ceylon cinnamon. Contrary to this advertising, both are *real* cinnamon, not artificial (chemical compund produced in the lab). The Ceylon's is much more expensive despite lower fragrance because it's rarer, simply supply/demand law.

    It's so so so sad that the younger generations don't want to keep up or learn the old ways. Out of all the old ways I think natural food and medicine are the most important things to keep going When it comes to culture it's so Important. The all these processed foods that are Poison that they're calling food and giving to us and our children is destroying humanity. This world is doomed. And it's looking like America is going to be the first to fall into a wast land. Unless things take a quick and careful turn for the better.
