11:41 moth, butterfly, and dragonfly iridescence are my favorite expressions of color. Genuinely the most beautiful and vibrant displays of color I’ve ever seen.
And you can’t even recreate it since it’s 100% based on microscopic cellular structures that are incredibly delicate…. So you can’t even depict the color properly over media.
It’s something YOU HAVE to see in person for yourself.
I also just remembered that hummingbirds have this thing too with their feathers.

As something interesting, the day-flying moth called the sunset moth is one of the most iridescent and beautiful I’ve seen, their wings sporting a rainbow of blacks, oranges, teals (or turquoise), greens, even a bit of blue or purple in there. Only difficult thing is even telling them apart from swallowtail butterflies on a cursory glance since they look so similar and are active at daytime.

  • @nmheath03

Fun fact about blue structural coloration: it's not just unique to butterflies, almost any animal that's blue or green uses it. In green's case, it's because they're usually yellow under it.

Kinda sad skipperlings were not mentioned. For those who don’t know skipperlings are kinda like the middle ground between moth and butterfly. They also have a stocky body, big eyes, and do short bursts of flight (iirc), hence the name

The scale shape and angle creating the colour of butterfly wings is why they make good display animals, and you often see boxes of butterflies pinned up on display. Because those structures remain after it dies and can be preserved. However colours made with chemicals or pigments degrade and decompose very rapidly after death, and can't really be preserved at all, and since moths colour is entirely from pigments and chemicals not scale structure they all go a rubbish brown colour soon after death. Which is why you never see display cases of moths. Which is damn shame because a lot of moth species are actually far prettier and interesting than their butterfly counterparts.
