Guitarist’s Wife Wrote This Song While FOLDING Laundry… Became a 70s Classic! | Professor of Rock

- What a story. Coming up next we have principles John Hall and Lance Hoppen from the 70s band Orleans. These guys lit up radio for a couple of years with 3 big hits including 2 that are still played all the time. But then the group up and vanished… John Hall retired from being a rockstar and went into politics. Today’s classic 70s hit “Still the One” was actually written by a band member’s wife while she was doing the laundry. One story claims she wrote it on an envelope and one says it was a napkin but the band recorded it in about 15 minutes. It became a top 5 smash and conquered pop culture and was released on a record that had one of the strangest album covers of the time. The interview is next on Professor of Rock.

Spiders And Snakes- Jim Stafford
That's Rock N Roll- Shaun Cassidy
Still The One by Orleans, Come And Get Your Love by Redbone, and Walking On Sunshine by Katrina & The Waves.
I was at a wedding once where the bandleader asked everyone to stand up. We did. Then he told all the single people to sit down. Then he said, if you've been married less then 5 years, you sit down. Then if you've been married less than 10 years, you sit down. This went on until the last couple was standing and they'd been married 43 years. Everyone applauded. Then the band leader said, "This next song is for you. Everyone else, you make sure you say 'Hello" to this couple before you leave because they know what they're doing!" Then the band played "Still the One." It was a happy time!
Thanks!
What an awesome story! Not too many people can stand up to that today. Sad, but true. Bless them! ✌🏼😊
Great story. Thanks for sharing.
Here's a better one. Destin from "Smarter every Day", told us one episode It's his anniversary, and proudly showed us a specific tin of ravioli. Took it to his wife who turned green, and exited the kitchen.
He explained; before his wedding, his dad said "Son, to have a marriage that will last forever, you WILL eat everything she prepares for you, and you WILL ask for seconds."
Wedding night, and she tasted the ravioli she was cooking, and puked the whole wedding night. It was off.
Really off.
But he ate it, AND he asked for seconds. They're still married.
I’m 51 and married 30 years and we have been together 33 years but known each other since 8 years old .
Great story ... thanks for sharing!
Been married 58 years this year! He is still the one! As you go through life you learn what true love means! For me I was hospitalized for a month with a life threatening surgery….my husband would sit by my side from morning until evening…..I knew that love is more than words….it is action. Never felt more loved. Years later he suffered a stroke, and as he recovered I had a chance to show him my love. We married young…I was 18, and he was 19. Yes I loved him, but found out just what that word really means! Thanks for allowing me to share my love story! Still going strong!
God bless you and your families!
So true, we have been married for 48 yrs this year! And yes to each other we are “still the one” would not trade one day (good n bad) with my husband by my side.
You know, it’s really great reading such nice comments in this little section. Met my darling Wife when she was sweet 16 and I was 20. I’m now 72 and she’s even more beautiful and 4 kids and many grandchildren later, we still cannot be without each other’s company😊. God Bless you all.
The night my husband and I met, we went to the jukebox to make a selection and he asked me, "do you like Orleans?" I sure did! So the first song we heard together was "Still the One". He told me that night he would marry me and we tied the knot exactly a year and a day later. Just celebrated 46 years together and LOVE that it's 'our' song! ❤
I really liked your format. This song has been one of our favorites since it came out. We celebrated our 52nd anniversary this week. ❤
You two are blessed! Wishing you many more years together!
I just got major goosebumps.
Sadly, most people that don't "get" this song, will probably never experience this kind of relationship. Married at 18 to my high school sweetheart. 42 years later still going strong and she is still the one!
❤❤ can't imagine life without you! You will always be the one! Love your wife Julie
@@raymyers6016 Congratulations to both of you!!!! Only approaching the 35th anniversary with my much better half....when you meet the right one, life is so much sweeter! Enjoy each day!!!!
Awww! Congratulations ❤!
Awwwww, Bravo!
Graduated HS in 1975. A guy in my class and his freshman gf found out she was pregnant. To everyone's shock her parents signed for her to marry. They moved to the town where he had a college scholarship and they had their child that year. She finished HS there about the time he graduated college. He enrolled in law school and she began study to be a teacher. Fast fwd...next yr will be our class reunion...our 50th and the same anniversary for them. For every past reunion they are awarded longest married. Our drama teacher always attends to give the award and says, To all you doubters and naysayers they're still going strong.
After law school and her teaching degree they had 2 more kids.
It worked for them bc their love and commitment were strong and their parents rallied for them. Ppl are shocked when I tell this story. Our small town isn't. We r actually proud
😊
I sometimes forget that the 70s was 5 decades ago until the Professor has an interview with a musician from that time and era. Then I snap out of it. 🤯
I’m a 75year old great grandma and I still love this song. Always makes me think of my hubby. 😊
Love that!
My folks were 53 years,
This song along with Player's baby come back and Aces' how long, are classic 70's gold.
For sure!
Paul Carrack is so underrated. Such an amazing voice.
Three songs similar in that most people who know the song couldn't tell you who sings it.
Yes. Paul Carrack would be a great interview for you, Professor.
Yup!
Took this 45 from my sister and played it over and over on my little record player...i was 5. When i met my husband i told him the story of me loving this song when i was little and he shared the same story...only it was on a jukebox..it's our song now..playing it for our silver anniversary this year. 😊
So cool! Congrats!
Our 30th is this year. We are going to play it also. I remember hearing it back in the 1970s on AM radio.

My wife and I will celebrate our 50th this June. We have three sons who are musically gifted and I have asked them to do this song for the party.
Congratulations! I hope you have many more happy years together.

Wonderful! Congratulations and happiness to you and yours
Happy 50th anniversary. How special. Enjoy that party.
Dance With Me - that song rockets me back to the 70's like no other.
It's such a timeless song.
Love that song.
I actually like that one better than Still the One
Absolutely! "Dance With Me" is still one of my top favorite songs, even after all this time!
Loved their stuff.
Dance With Me was one of thoes songs that the 1970s mixer that the girls will be staying against the wall and we be hoping a nice guy would come up to us
This is downright eerie--I heard "Still the One" on the radio today, and I thought, "The Professor needs to do a video on this one." And here it is!
You hearvany lottery numbers you want to share?😅
I can’t hear ‘Dance with Me’/& ‘Still the One’ without smiling…😁
Such happy love songs!❤️
I remember when ABC used Still The One in a commercial back when Happy Days was the #1 show.
I swear that tune was everywhere.
That girl in the t-shirt and shorts….loved that commercial. My wife didn’t.😂
KIII TV Corpus Christi had that as their promo for years. I guess it was a ABC National thing. They used it for promos all over.
Mom and Dad made it past their 46th anniversary before he passed due to complications from a stroke.
Long-term committed true love is possible if two good people are together.
Still the one!🎶
Such sweet harmonies by Orleans... "Dance With Me" puts me in a good mood every single time! Disco Duck kept "Still the One" from #1? Puh-lease!
Damn you Rick Dees!
Right?

One of the worst songs to hit number one!
@@magneto7930might be the worst song ever period
Back in the day, I had a Navy Vet, bar patron, Charles (Charlie, Chuck), tell me that "You're Still The One" was his wedding song. R.I.P. Charles. This guy was the best! He and his wife picked a great song!
My husband always claims Hard Headed Woman by Cat Steven’s as our song…I’m not a fan so much, but as a Vietnam Combat Vet, he credits my intolerance of drinking and drugs as keeping him from sliding off into PTSD hell.
So..yeah…it’s our song.
Aww, that's such the sweetest backstory ever told. Who knew that laundry could inspire a classic rock song?
Right?
I would have never guessed.
Definitely a classic gold. I don't care how it's classified. We all know the words and we turn it up loud. It's a happy song, feel good.
I'm the lead singer for the Yacht Rock group Yachty By Nature, and the crowd loves this tune!
local we have a yacht rock group.very popular around breweries local events etc.
I love the band name. Clever.
I am Glad that John Hall gave a shout out to the musicians that performed the songs in the studio
They were the best live band ever. Loved when they all switched instruments during the song "Breakdown" until everyone had played every instrument 🎸. What a time to be alive and fortunate enough to be there!
Wow, that is so cool!
This song has always been a favorite for me and my wife. We’ve been together for 39 years this month.
Oh man, this is one of the most underrated classic rock songs EVER. The lyrics are so impressively NOT repetitive, it's a great swingin' time, the harmonies invoke a Motown influence in the best way, and the last fifteen seconds are arguably the BEST last fifteen seconds of ANY song, ever.
It's still the ONE ! Great song ! When I met my wife I was 14, this became our song. When I was 16 and this song came out it was like we'd been together since way back when. It's a decent bit of music and lyric helped. Without ever saying it we both knew it was our song. When you're young a year or two is like a decade now. Still our song after all these years and it's been a GREAT run ! Thanks for the TUNE !
Thanks for sharing!
How long have you been married?
These guys were great! There were several bands in the 1970's with such beautiful vocal HARMONIES - Orleans, Bellamy Brothers, Eagles - whose music had crossover appeal with multiple genres. No matter what you were into, you almost couldn't dislike them. Pop / rock, R & B, and metal fans alike would be singing their songs.
Good call!
There's magic in vocal harmonies ✨️
I always love good harmony in a band. Bohemian Rhapsody started my love for harmonies.
Well said!
I'd forgotten that Orleans sang bot those great songs.
Such great responses by these thoughtful men. I'm big on gratitude.
I was reminded of the saying "Talent is God's gift to you. What you do with it is your gift back to Him."
One of my favorite sing along songs and bands. RIP Larry Hoppen!
Thanks for watching!
Orleans is SOOOO underrated. They are one of those groups where you don't know about them but you know their songs. As for the album cover, all they had to do was wear shirts. 😅
For sure!
That’s true!
Such great music in 1976. I was 12 and had a huge crush on my brother's best friend. We were watching a New Year's Eve special when this song came on. We were the only ones still awake and I remember thinking how cool it would be if it were our song and we were still together in the future. That didn't happen, but I always think of him when this song comes on. One of my all time favorites.
Thanks for sharing!
I was 13 then brings back good memories too.
@@mikefisher2673 Very cool!
Did you see him again after that?
@@xxlilly_playsxxkiz9980 I haven't seen him since high school. He still lives around my area, if I ever see him again, we'll have a laugh about it.
I always thought, and lived, with "Dance with me" being the introduction to that "love of your life"- You've just met. A talk. A dance. And the rest is history. "Still the One"? The continuation of that beautiful story. That's just for me, of course. Two great songs, that always bring back strong memories of the past.
Oh my goodness! This is my mom and dad's song!🥰 My mom always danced with my dad in the living room when it came on back in the 70's when I was a kid! She loves this band even still and you can visually see how it lifts her spirits when ever she hears it now. Both my parents are in their early 80's and still together. Not because of this song, but it just goes to show how it was so well chosen😊
Thank you for sharing such a tender memory! I love to heart that Linda!
Awesome! A great song for your parents to bond to.
For such talented musicians, they are heart-warming, down-to-Earth fellows! This made me smile as much as Dance with Me does when I hear it.
I wasn’t even born then but I can’t even count how many times my dad has popped these songs on. I actually learned how to play Dance with Me on my acoustic just because I like the song so much.
Thanks for sharing! How long have you been playing?
@@ProfessorofRock my mom started me on piano at age 4. After she passed when I was 5 almost 6 my older brother took over my lessons and introduced me to the guitar. I play occasionally for my brothers pieced together bar band of friends from over the years whenever I can get to Vegas.

This and the Disco Duck comment, ... at least we didnt have to sing Disco Duck for 40 years.
This guy's a genius burn comic!
I saw Orleans in 1977 at a free concert in Boston when I was a student at Berklee. Burton Cummings was the opening act, and Heart was the headliner; was an awesome concert.
My favorite Orleans song is "Love Takes Time". Heard it at a bar once and sang along. Friends may have thought I was inebriated 😂
Thanks for sharing!
My “garage band” played HUNDREDS of gigs in the ‘70’s and early ‘80’s in Central New York. We were very familiar with Orleans and thankful for their material. It was a definite, a given, no-risk call to play an Orleans tune and get the people started onto the dance floor. Thank you Orleans AND thank you Professor of Rock (the back story is always the best story.)
When he said Disco Duck was ahead of them!! I was so glad I had not just taken
a drink. Oh lord that is crazy. I know where
John Hall grew up. I know those towns.
Love this song.🌹
One of my all time favorite songs. This song reminds me of being a little kid in the early 70's and how much easier life was back then.
For sure!
Timeless song, I love hearing it anywhere anytime.
Great interview, thank you!
This is still such a fun song to sing. Pure words of love!❤
Regarding 10:20 area.
I remember Billy Corgan of Smashing Pumpkins said the melody for the song 1979 came to him while he was sitting at a right light in heavy traffic waiting for the light to change. He pulled off to the side of the road right away because he knew the song would vanish into thin air if he didn't start writing the melody asap. Thank god he knew the right thing to do. One of the greatest rock songs ever.
Love this song!!! One of the first songs I actually remember being a huge fan of when I discovered my own music (not just hearing the stuff my parents listened to). Still love it to this day! It's a volume knob twister every time it comes on the radio now (although most radios these days no longer have knobs!!)
and it’s definitely a singalong for me.
Quite interesting getting the backstory on great 70's tunes. Thanks for covering this Prof!
I have always loved their songs! Thanks for sharing their gift and stories.
I have always loved "Still the one" by Orleans since I first heard it. I was about 11 or 12 years old when it came out and just loved the sound and just a feel good song. When I was in high school, each senior class, including mine, used that song at the end of our slide show presentation of the seniors though the years at school. "Still the one" has stood the test of time and is a timeless classic. Thank you to Orleans for putting out such a great song!
ONE OF MY FAVORITE 70S SONGS OF ALL TIME!!!. One of the greatest guitar riff intros of all songs!!
For sure.
Was noodling around on guitar to these songs while watching this- so fun to play along with. And I learned more about them too! Thanks Professor for working my brain as well as my chops. Three chords and the truth, brotha!!
Awesome interview! I can remember belting this out repeatedly, every time it came on the radio. The band I worked for as a soundman even performed it every night. Never got old with me like so many other songs. Thanks for bringing back so many great memories! Keep up the great work.
Awesome song! Takes you back in time. Instant time machine.
For sure!
Epic harmonized guitar parts in STO. I would have liked to hear more about that. Great interview. Thanks!
Glad you enjoyed it! What else would you like to see?
These tunes played often but always felt welcome to the ears.
The song Dance With Me brings back memories of junior high school dances ♥️
Professor, you certainly ROCK!!
Mid late 70's Orleans was always on the radio, Brings me back to to my Slot car days at Charlie's raceway 😂
Thanks!
When I retired I bought another slot car track witch was my favorite hobby and Orleans is Still my favorite band
They had the best guitar and vocal harmony's of any band.
I am glad you chose this song because it is one of my favorites. When I heard it in the seventies, the vocals struck me as being unusually good. They really set the standard. They have a live album from 1975 at Harvard Square that is classic. Orleans is a truly great band.
"Dance with Me" is my fave song from their repertoire. Just listening to it makes me smile
This channel gives me the opportunity to take my memory back to the 70s and remember being in my teens. These were my favorite songs. The songs that made me who I am now. Whether it was Orleans or Kansas or Chicago singing the calm, relaxing lyrics that inspired me to lie in the woods and listen and imagine my future going and doing what I chose to do didn’t matter. What mattered was that they made it possible.
How I love this group! I had the pleasure of hearing them perform at a casino near New Orleans in the early 2,000's and even a greater pleasure getting to meet them after the show. They were just amazing! ❤
Very cool! Thanks for sharing!
So amazing the city was named after them.
Professor, "Still the One" is just pure heaven! My favorite Orleans song is "Love Takes Time." Orleans never gets old regardless of the decade, imho.
Both wonderful top hits. What a gift that the wife gave them; to have a means of continuing to support making music all these years later. That is amazing.
This is one of my all time favorite songs. Even though it was released several years prior to my birth. It is still a favorite to this day. I love the vocals and the harmonies and the arrangement of this all time classic. I will be listening to this one forevermore.
Orleans used to play at a place called Opus 40 in Saugerties, NY almost every Labor Day weekend. Wow! What a good time! Thanks Jon and Lance.
Thanks for watching!
This is one of the reasons I love this channel, to get to listen to the artists after miles and years under their wheels to hear the wisdom of what it was to create then share their legendary music. My favorite line was to be blessed with a talent and actually having the will and work to make a lifetime doing it. We, the listeners, are the blessed ones to get to feel and hear these songs that will live forever though the decades, fantastic episode professor, loved those interviews!
Thanks My Name!
And I didn’t know one of them was also a congressman!
Musicians knew these guys were special. Fantastic players with gorgeous vocals. I have seen them on numerous occasions with different members. Always great.
This is a serious, meaningful song, and at the same time it is a lot of fun. I love it.
It's right in the middle of Classic Rock and Yacht Rock.
Good call!
I believe the “in-between” groups produce the best tunes.
Agreed splitting genres can be great, and it is Classic Rock leaning toward yacht rock. I don't see it as yacht rock but it is a great song on a yacht rock mix to speed things up. It has that 70s accoustic, feel good vibe. Yacht rock has a bit more of a 80s ish thing going on to me. Yacht rock is drinking your wine or beer on a sail boat, this is a 70s car floating down the highway on a road trip at a comfortable but moving down the road speed.
Well written song, which was true to their sound At the same time, I could see other 70s Bands recording it. Kind of Bread or America meets Crosby Stills Nash with the harmony they have, again a great mix. However, you see it. Great work and thankful they had the success on the radio and we get to enjoy it.
I had heard Still the One for most of my childhood on oldies radio, but not long after my parents were remarried after a bit of a separation, it gained a whole new meaning for me. My Mom was always the one for my Dad. He has never loved anyone else, but I always think of how my Dad is STILL the one for my Mom. The line, "and sometimes I never want to see you again, but I want you to know, after all these years, you're still the one I want whispering in my ear" reminds me that sometimes love can truly be meant to be. Because there was no divorce, my parents are still the one for each other and it's been nearly 42 years. Thank you, Prof and thanks to Orleans for this memory
Thank you gentlemen and wife behind the scene for sharing your timeless gifts. ❤
This is the very first song I remember hearing on the radio, still one of my favorites and regularly added to playlists. Love this song, love Orleans!

If my Daddy had lived, I was going to use this song and make a video for my parent’s 50th wedding anniversary. Sadly he died 4 months and 4 days prior to it.
Awww, I think you should go ahead and make the video anyways, as a tribute. I bet your mom would still appreciate it. ❤

Rock on! Thanks!
Great interview. Love hearing the stories behind the song…and the band
Didn't know the band but really enjoyed the song so this video is a win.
Still The One was used by ABC in its 1977-78 season to announce new shows on its roster.
Kudos for the deep dive of a song/group that I’ve known forever, but had no background knowledge of the song. Really cool that the Professor has gotten enough followers that the band members took the time for a really nice, chill interview. Enjoyed it thoroughly and downloaded a Orleans song afterwards that I hadn’t heard before.
My favorite song! I have Orleans saved on my Sirius radio and I put them on every single time. I love them!!
love the Danzig 1 long box! Hung that in my room when I was in high school 🤘 0:54 (only to be topped/joined by the Danzig 3 long box, that was 3D/textured. . .now that was badass🤘)
"Still the One" is total Yacht Rock Gold. I group Orleans and Pablo Cruz together.

I know what you mean. Similar sounds!
People that listened to this music in the 70’s…did not own Yachts.
I mistook "Love Takes Time" for being by Pablo Cruise and wondered why the hell I couldn't find the song! Oops.
@@cs292 The term doesn't claim listeners are yacht owners. It's closer to a reference to if they hd been on one or thought about it or like sailing, and music to do that to, or so someone thought. It's also meant to refer to a kind of musicianship and production and to be kind of a fun term.
Love it. Just started singing and husband sang along. Married 31 years
Good video, as always Prof. :) Still the one still a fav of mine. It makes this 71 yr old man's eyes leak, thinking about the past and my life during those great songs, some of the best EVER written and sung. It is just one of those songs that grasps me, and doesn't let go. ty for bringing this back to life :) ❤💯🙏
I love Orleans! Every song I’ve ever heard by this band has just been KILLER! Dance With me, Still the One, Love Takes Time… To me, they were the epitome of what I used to call 70’s Cheese, but now the genre is referred to as Yacht Rock. Why? I dunno but that genre… I can listen to all day, every day! Yeah, Orleans made AMAZING songs!
Superb synopsis
I like this song. Brings back memories of dancing in the kitchen.

This song was one of our TV station’s theme for years as well here in Australia! It’s such a feel good, light filled song. Dance With Me is my favourite song of theirs. The melody is so pretty and it’s always going to be a 1970’s summer to me. For years I thought it was a Chicago song!
We love this song!! We sing it to each other everytime it comes on. We've been together for thirty years and she is still the one!!
Kept out of the number 1 position by "Disco Duck"? That's just brutal.
Just a few years ago at work myself and coworker of a similar vintage were talking music with some younger staff members and my friend said songs were just so much nicer (meaning romantically) when we were young. I agreed and the lyrics "Dance with me, I want to be your partner..." just popped right out of my mouth and we went right into a mini duet. The kids just kind of looked at us funny. What surprised me was that of all the music crammed in my head, this one popped up first.
"Dance With Me" is so sweetly sentimental with a Southern, almost Cajun flair; I hear it and think back to a girl I was seeing in '75, '76 who mentioned how much she loved.......the song! Not me, lol. I got over it, but everything about the sound, the mood, chords, melodica (?) solo just takes me to my 18th year when it was released. Thanks for doing this show, Adam! You have a colossal heart that this music needs to survive.
Been watching on and off , by far this one is the best interview yet thanks
"Still the One" and "Dance With Me" - Orleans caught lightning in a bottle twice.
Absolutely one of my all time favorites. I wanted to sing it for my grandparent’s 60th, but sadly, time had other plans and took my grandmother too soon. Grandfather still kicking at 94 though.
Still one of the happiest, soul hugging, sing at the top of your lungs songs ever. Next to ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky, this forces you to smile and be happy.

Man, Professor I have watched your channel for a couple of years now and I realise you probably get a lot of praise , but what you do is some of the best in depth and detailed information I have ever had the pleasure of watching ! I personally think maybe your passion for music comes from a wonderful place. Like most musicians who make it in this industry, your view of the world relative to your experience with family, life and love is nothing short of the magic that is made by those you admire. You have access to knowledge that is far beyond your years and peers (and possibly most people even in the industry). This comes from the same place as you, the Heart. I wish you all the best. I am a nobody musician who tried, but failed to make it. Have you ever tried to be a musician ? Because you have the same drive, passion and intellect that it takes to make your own mark in this industry ! (Obviously!). I have nothing to gain personally from this comment . I genuinely wish you all the best life has to offer. Your Dad would be proud !!!
