There was a time when all fps were called doom clones. But eventually, the community recognised it as a genre of its own. The same thing is happening with dark souls. We are witnessing the creation of a new genre. So haters, it's not about being dark souls. It's about being inspired by dark souls
Dark Souls IS NOT a new genre though. The genre already exists, it's just done a specific way in Dark Souls which then became popular. The genre is still Action RPG. There's nothing stopping these 'new-era' games from being action RPGs, people are just so quick to compare it to something everyone knows.
This looks solid! I hate seeing people hate on 'Dark Souls clones' More games should be inspired by greatness. No one is forcing you Dark Souls loyalists to buy it. It doesn't need to be as good as Dark Souls it just needs to be a good game and have its own spin on what is becoming a genre.
Kyle H Hallelujah! A person who holds off on pre-judging something, these people commenting are acting like once an I.P. gets published no one else is allowed to try to innovate based on it. If that were the case we wouldn't have Call of Duty or Final Fantasy AT ALL, as they are both designed off pre-existing games (Doom/Quake, and Dragon Quest/Phantasy Star)
Even Lords of the Fallen served its purpose as accessible take on the formula. I probably would not have played BloodBorne or Dark Souls if it wasn't for lords. I had tried to play Dark Souls and kept getting crushed before I could get a feel for it, lords gave me that opportunity to learn the basics and by time Bloodborne came out I could feel the difference. Was Lords worth 100 dollars (Australian day one price of games) no it but most of the time we should't preorder or pay full price for games anyway. Wait for a sale and try the game before passing judgement. I have had so many people this last month message me through Hangouts apologising cause of youtube comment wars about Nier Automata's quality. I had claimed it was a game changer to the industry and a lot of people were arguing about it. 7 of those people a month later messaged me saying they had tried the demo and bought the game, some had already beaten it and knew what everyone was going on about. People need to try before forming an opinion. If more people started deconstructing what made Nier Automata so different and fresh, I would be elated. Innovation breeds innovation! It's something the industry is lacking. Companies need to look at what makes games great and build off that aspect, not what makes them sell. Remember when every game got brown and a multiplayer component because of COD or how every game needs to be Hero based thanks to MOBA's. I'm not saying these bad things but the market gets saturated pretty quickly. So kudos to The Surge Devs for trying to be like Dark Souls because Dark Souls deserves to be an inspiration to the industry rather then what most devs look toward for inspiration, which is money, money and more money. Lets just let the game come out, good or bad I'm glad it was made, it still looks more innovative then most Western games these days. I didn't like Farcry Primal all that much but I still love that Ubisoft tried something new and took a risk.
So true. Back when Diablo was released, a lot of diablo clones came up and no one seems to remember that anymore.People, this is how gaming sub genres start, some one makes a good original product and others start to imitate it while trying to make it their own. Why should you bash on games that try to give you more soulsy goodstuff. (ps. Lords of the fallen wasnt good but it seems they have learned a lot from it and made Surge a lot better from their experience.)
I still think Lords of Fallen is alright like 7/10 means a good game and I could give it no less then 6! Regarding Diablo, I played the demo for Vikings Wolves of something, I immediately could tell it was a Diablo clone, after beating the demo my thoughts were if I wanted to replay Diablo I could play this. I get new experience with unique spins on mechanics I know i like and based around a culture I love. LIKE! Whats is wrong with that? Its my money and my time, do you have to hate on me and that game cause its like a game that you like. IDK its crazy lol. Everyone should be happy and play what they want to play and make what they want to make. :D
Now THIS was a proper gameplay demo, FightingCowboy did one for The Surge that ended up makingpeople think it was even more glitchy and unresponsive than its predecessor Lords of the Fallen. This shows what the game is really about.
Yeah watched his video first and the game looked really poorly, but this gameplay shows off a bit more of what you can do in the game, and it does not look that bad. Not a for sure buy but before i saw this video i would not even consider it..
Sam Dezzi His attitude about the game was so bad and his lack of giving a shit so obvious i ended up unsubbing. I like his gameplay sometimes, but shitting on something in a first look when you aren't even trying to play it how its meant to be played is shitty.
They're probably referring to the "techno-slum" kinda vibe the game's aesthetic has, where there are weird contrasts of high technology mixed with poverty/decay everywhere as far as setting/locale goes
Had this discussion in the office. Almost entirely based on the fact District 9 was more popular and is more recognisable, though I basically agree. Elysium is the thing. And Chappie. But we don't talk about Chappie. - Nath
A couple small things that weren't mentioned but are important to note, you can't move (strafe) while blocking and the timer to get your scrap(?) back is more forgiving than it looks. Every time you kill an enemy whilst your timer is going it will add time back to the countdown, for instance, if your timer says you have 3 minutes left and you stop to kill an enemy and lose 10 seconds doing so by killing that enemy you gain back 15 seconds putting your timer at 3:05 instead of 2:50 (these are not exact numbers)
I've never played any of the DARK SOULS GAME cuase I don't really like the dark theme/look of it (I don't think it's a bad game, no one could say that), it's just not for me. Btw this one has really catched my attention and I will get it. Looks amazing. Any info on when is coming out?
Stuart Pawley Yeah mate I know the DARK SOULS games are a lot about that and it's something that may appeal some players. I like that too. But for me it's also about the overall look and the environment and where the story takes place. If I'd have to play a dark game (word joke lol) I would not really enjoy the feeling when playing it, as far as how good the gameplay can be. Dunno if I'm getting my point right :)
Yeah im with you! I enjoy a challenge like games that make you think like Unchartered, Tomb Raider, and lot of rpgs and play most games on Normal, Story and sword etc havent ever done an Insanity, Hardcore run- just the though of being hit killed instadeath all the time doesnt fit in meaning of enjoyable
You should check out Dark Souls instead of this to be honest, because the producers of this game are inspired by Fromsoft series Dark souls and you should totally check out one of the souls game's or BloodBorne but that one is very dark themed. In my honest opinion this game looks like a pile of scrap garbarge compared to anything Fromsoft deliverd or even check out Nioh..Because there last game Lord Of The Fallen was a try at Dark Souls series that didn't end all to well it was such a laggy game so clunky and they haven't even made a descent game.
Davide Altavilla I like the souls games but I am a bit tired of the very dark atmosphere and doom and gloom they bring. Already pre ordered this because of its much brighter overall look and feel. I know there are dark areas too but I like what I see so far.
#301club its been awhile since I've felt the comfortable warmth of my favorite club...its good to be back! BTW...I was re-watching Until Dawn and I noticed that Dave or Rob never used the phrase "Done City" ever again even though they've had plenty of opportunities.....challenge struck!!!
Now that Darksouls has become a genre, fromsoft need to make a new kings field so that first person action dungeon crawlers become a thing. Do it fromsoft!
war weeny sure they were clunky but with today's technology the genre could boom again, if they take into consideration games like ultima underworld and Arx fatalis. Those games were and still are really immersive and mechanically amazing.
AlmightyStarfire its obviously lords of the fallen look how he moves and how he hits with the weapon its the same as lords of the fallen watch a video of lords of the fallen and compare it with this and you will see what i mean
Finally, more information on this game. Seems to have had no new media coverage for almost a year now. If they managed to lean and *greatly* improve all of the shortcomings of Lords of the Fallen, this should be decent. I like that it's also in a different setting for a change.
I don't get why people trash Lords of the Fallen so much. Don't get me wrong, it was an average attempt at making a Dark Souls clone but the overall experience was decent. I enjoyed my time with it so I will be keeping an eye on this game.
Looks ok, possible sleeper hit. Despite its obvious flaws, I liked Lords of the Fallen as well, played through it twice with different characters and it was fun. So hopefully the devs have learnt with this game. The AI does look a bit dense though, all you are doing is backing off and baiting attacks before counter striking and repeating the process. I'll keep my eye on it, love these types of games.
I do have a question about this: Does it have a difficulty setting? I love Soulslike games...but I am terrible at them, so I never get to enjoy them to their fullest. I like the look of this game but I don't want it locked to the "extra-difficult" setting as its cousins all tend to be :S
hi, what is the story behind it all like? do you feel emerged enough to carry on? I found lords of the fallen a good idea but severely lacking a likeability
It looks very influenced by Elysium with the mech suits! Looks cool, not sure it will live up to the dark souls-esc gameplay but it seems to be a worthy filler. Hows the enemy and combat variation?
was this played on super-easy mode? because every fight looks one-sided. it looks like you easily take down enemies before they can even finish a swing. i like a challenge, please tell me this game can provide one
seems like these guys learned alot from Lord's of the Fallen! I may have to have a dabble into this. Looks like it won't stress me to the max like Bloodborne
Honestly, this looks alright. I am not into Sci-fi that much, but this looks pretty decent and the company looks like it is going in the right direction, especially considering what I've heard about how much they appreciate consumer feedback.
Looks worth a playthrough. Personally though I'd really like a Soulslike game set more in a high-fantasy setting. Something more colorful and "happy" but still with that FromSoftware difficulty. Beautiful Elven Maidens, Noble Paladins, Dwarf Lords, that sort of thing.
I love the souls series and bloodborne. once I got it through my head that lords of the fallen was not a souls game I was able to enjoy that game also.
I think people prey off the Dark Souls name to advertise (better than a Dyson!) but this seems more like Lords of the Fallen meets Fallout; I'm curious to see if there's an appropriate backstory, appropriate level design, if enemy AI holds up, what sort of world integration there is. The graphics look really good though and the gameplay seems fun. It's hard to not compare every game to Horizon Zero Dawn, Uncharted, Dark Souls. Perhaps a bit linear in some regards but the game looks like it has a lot of good potential. I'm gonna keep watching to see where I land on it but this is some good footage to showcase the game! It's correct to say there is no difficulty setting in this game, right?
i;m still on the fence about this one. Loved Darks Souls, but did not care that much for Lord of the Fallen. I think it did not have the mystery or intrigue that kept me hooked like the Fromsoftware games. Hopefully The Surge will deliver a great Sci-fi atmosphere this time around
You should check out Nioh, which is in my opinion much more fun and interesting than Dark Souls because you actually feel involved in the story and the gameplay is closer to Bloodborne but unique in a lot of ways. Best Souls-like game so far I'd say, very well crafted and doesn't just feel like a re-skin.
It bothers me a bit too much how games like this gets compared with dark souls. Yes it has similarities like every game has, but the game is its own thing and when people go in with the mentality "this is dark souls in a sci fi world" then prepare to be disappointed. Same genre, but still very different (just look at Nioh). I am certainly curious about the reviews and hopefully it's any good. As long as the reviewers don't have the "dark souls mentality". Even if it is just an average game I feel like I could enjoy this game very much.
This is from the same company that made Lords of the Fallen. I hated that game. It had some really bad map design choices. So I'm going to wait to see how this turns outs first before jumping into it. I really loved Dark Souls and Bloodborne and I want more of this combat style.
Still get iffy with how people try so hard to compare games like this to Dark souls, personally I think they'll feel very different however Surge does look interesting also, Boss weapons!
Not seen much of this game but it looks like a solid game. Personally I haven't played Dark Souls but this game looks to peak my interest unlike them.... not saying Dark Souls is bad by the way!
Thanks for the preview. It certainly looks cool, but I'm pretty sure it's not for me. A "punishing difficulty", as in the Dark Souls series, isn't something that appeals to me. When I play a game, I don't want to feel like I'm being punished. I don't doubt this does appeal to many, and good for them, but it isn't for me. Soulslike has become one of these terms I love, because it saves me the trouble and time of investigating further. Like "online only" or rouguelike, it translates simply to "not for me".
i feel like non of them should buy this game rob is going to get stuck looking at the scenery dave is going to get to scared to play and nate is going to have to put it down or he will break it in rage
So it's a game with Souls gameplay mechanics but not in a scary and dark environment! I might give it a try! (As much as I like the art direction of Souls & Bloodborne games, I hate scary games and the slightest hit of scary thing, turns me away)
There was a time when all fps were called doom clones. But eventually, the community recognised it as a genre of its own. The same thing is happening with dark souls. We are witnessing the creation of a new genre. So haters, it's not about being dark souls. It's about being inspired by dark souls

I wish people wouldn't refer to Dark Souls as being the first of the genre, Demon's Souls was first!

Your problem is that you watched fightingcowboy.
Nothing like District 9, Elisium and Dark Souls sure. District 9 was aliens living in slums.
Freakyfelon Agreed!
Yeah "Hey, this is a popular Sci-Fi thing!"
Surprised they didn't say Star Wars......
Freakyfelon my exact thought
They're probably referring to the "techno-slum" kinda vibe the game's aesthetic has, where there are weird contrasts of high technology mixed with poverty/decay everywhere as far as setting/locale goes

Davide Altavilla I like the souls games but I am a bit tired of the very dark atmosphere and doom and gloom they bring. Already pre ordered this because of its much brighter overall look and feel. I know there are dark areas too but I like what I see so far.
I think think will be better than what people give it credit for...
war weeny Some people loved that game. It was too slow for me.
war weeny Yea...
wasn't going to go for this but now I shall
#301club its been awhile since I've felt the comfortable warmth of my favorite club...its good to be back! BTW...I was re-watching Until Dawn and I noticed that Dave or Rob never used the phrase "Done City" ever again even though they've had plenty of opportunities.....challenge struck!!!
I've got this and Prey to look forward to playing. I'm so excited. :D
this looks really interesting
extreme_ primus wait till it goes on sell
Yeah Mass Effect andromeda all looked awesome from trailers and teasers but didst shift alot!
LoL you are definitely wrong its not Dark souls meets district 9 its lords of the fallen meets district 9
When he said Future World and augmented I thought more Deus Ex spin off
AlmightyStarfire its obviously lords of the fallen look how he moves and how he hits with the weapon its the same as lords of the fallen watch a video of lords of the fallen and compare it with this and you will see what i mean
No its a lords of the fallen clone
Bye*
They probably meant Elysium.
quick question for Nate. will you be reprising the role of Tintin again?
Finally, more information on this game. Seems to have had no new media coverage for almost a year now. If they managed to lean and *greatly* improve all of the shortcomings of Lords of the Fallen, this should be decent. I like that it's also in a different setting for a change.

Does the enemies at least move or attack? All I see is them waiting for you to get close and do the first attack..
Looks awesome! More of this please!
Rob N Same
Rob N I also liked LoTF and this looks MUCH better IMO. Already pre purchased!
I love LOTF .. It has some of the best view points that I have ever seen in any game..
This game keeps looking better. I do hope they add maybe temporary heavy hitter pick ups like low ammo rocket launcher/grenade launcher.
are there NPC's and shops for certain equipment? can u take weapons from bosses?
I must say...prior to this video, I knew NOTHING about this game. Now I am excited about playing it. TY.
whats the depth length and complexity compared to ds2 or ds3?
Can't wait to play this later.
I do have a question about this: Does it have a difficulty setting? I love Soulslike games...but I am terrible at them, so I never get to enjoy them to their fullest. I like the look of this game but I don't want it locked to the "extra-difficult" setting as its cousins all tend to be :S
@access how does the map work? are they linked areas more linear like Souls or open world (shudder)
any screen tear on ps4 ??? After wildlands, i can't tolerate anymore screen tear
Is this a PS4 exclusive or just a first on PS4 situation, like Dead rising on Xbox?
Hey Nath, is the level design more open like DS1 or more level-based and linear like Nioh?
very cool game. And great video which was very easy to listen to, nice job guys .
this is very reminiscent of Elysium, the film with Matt Damon. On another note Creo is already a company; its a 3d modelling software company.
Souls-like is my favourite genre! Bring em on!
Did they say how long The Surge will be?
Why does it look like its feet is sliding on the ground?
hi, what is the story behind it all like? do you feel emerged enough to carry on? I found lords of the fallen a good idea but severely lacking a likeability
Can you pause the game because that's always a deal breaker with me and this type of games
Sure, you can always go to the ingame menu.
It looks very influenced by Elysium with the mech suits! Looks cool, not sure it will live up to the dark souls-esc gameplay but it seems to be a worthy filler. Hows the enemy and combat variation?
Dude, they took that exo suit idea from Alysium
Thanks for the great video introduction to this game - knew noting of it before watching this vid, have just bought it on psn! :-)
Does this game have character customisation?
I'm glad circle dodging is back
was this played on super-easy mode? because every fight looks one-sided. it looks like you easily take down enemies before they can even finish a swing. i like a challenge, please tell me this game can provide one
Do you guys know if this will have any kind of multiplayer?
No mention to Nier: Automata in this? That genuinely surprised me.
What's the in game reason for respawning?
seems like these guys learned alot from Lord's of the Fallen!
Everything looks exactly the same to me.
All armor, enemies, level design.
Got this on preorder.!cant wait to play the hell out of it!
Same!
Looks worth a playthrough.
Personally though I'd really like a Soulslike game set more in a high-fantasy setting. Something more colorful and "happy" but still with that FromSoftware difficulty. Beautiful Elven Maidens, Noble Paladins, Dwarf Lords, that sort of thing.
was this thing marketed... at all?
I love the souls series and bloodborne. once I got it through my head that lords of the fallen was not a souls game I was able to enjoy that game also.
Hows the difficulty? I got too frustrated with bloodborne to continue playing that.
does it have multiplayer??
gonna buy this for sure
The thing i hate about this game is the walk and run, jump mechanic. It looks like his sliding from that floor to another doesnt look clean
It is hard like nioh and dark souls?
When you said future world and augmented my first thought was more Deus Ex
I think people prey off the Dark Souls name to advertise (better than a Dyson!) but this seems more like Lords of the Fallen meets Fallout; I'm curious to see if there's an appropriate backstory, appropriate level design, if enemy AI holds up, what sort of world integration there is. It's correct to say there is no difficulty setting in this game, right?
when dark souls meets elysium
Hopefully it'll be at least as good as Technomancer.
Its the power armor rig from Elysium
No matter what is being classified as, it'll never be as good as dark souls. I ll be trying ii, though.
i;m still on the fence about this one.
Thnx for the tip! Yeah, had my eye on that as well. Probably gonna pick Nioh up somewhere along the road. So many good games now, it's awesome.
Am I the only one asking why isn't he using a GUN? Or am I missing something?
This could have had some original gameplay, but why, when we can just slap half of Dark Souls' gameplay on it?
0:41 I swear the picture on the right is Tom Hardy.
are you's playing on easy again
Not gonna top dark souls but im give it a try for sure.
It bothers me a bit too much how games like this gets compared with dark souls. thare is a line a huge one between clone and inspired
This is looking super sexy, even without shields.
I don't know about everyone else but this looks like Dead space meets Dark souls!!!!!!! but without Necromorphs
This is from the same company that made Lords of the Fallen. I hated that game. It had some really bad map design choices. So I'm going to wait to see how this turns outs first before jumping into it. I really loved Dark Souls and Bloodborne and I want more of this combat style.
ps exclusive?
This is nothing like District 9. I think they meant Elysium.
Still get iffy with how people try so hard to compare games like this to Dark souls, personally I think they'll feel very different however Surge does look interesting also, Boss weapons!
Not sure why everyone is upset. I don't feel mislead by the title at all.
I think we have a ways before a game comes along that can match the brilliance that is darksouls, but as always, this game looks promising.
From Software changed the game forever
god everything game that is like dark souls gets TITLE DARK SOULS CLONE *WORDS*
FSS! District 9 was the movie about aliens! Elysium was the one about exoskeletons! Learn your Blomkamp movies!
The graphics look nice but the gameplay doesn't look as fluid or as hard as Dark Souls I don't have much hope lets see when the reviews come out
Not seen much of this game but it looks like a solid game. Personally I haven't played Dark Souls but this game looks to peak my interest unlike them.... not saying Dark Souls is bad by the way!
thts th rig from elysium
Thanks for the preview. It certainly looks cool, but I'm pretty sure it's not for me. A "punishing difficulty", as in the Dark Souls series, isn't something that appeals to me. When I play a game, I don't want to feel like I'm being punished. I don't doubt this does appeal to many, and good for them, but it isn't for me. Soulslike has become one of these terms I love, because it saves me the trouble and time of investigating further. Like "online only" or rouguelike, it translates simply to "not for me".
i feel like non of them should buy this game
rob is going to get stuck looking at the scenery
dave is going to get to scared to play
and nate is going to have to put it down or he will break it in rage
Where tf did this game come from
Needs character customization
dark souls clones are the new doom clones. we went full circle, people
The combat is too slow. like his swings seem to take forever to finally hit and to recover
Oops meant to do this... *🤗🤗🤗*
He got Half Life 2 confused with Half Life 1
1+2=3
Half Life 3 Confirmed...we did it guys
Apparently the next game is set in WW2.
So they stole more than one idea this time? Maybe tracing can be art too? Probably not, but I'm asking anyway.
Lessons not leanrt from Lords of the fallen, a slow combat kills any kind of potential engagement
So it's a game with Souls gameplay mechanics but not in a scary and dark environment!
I might give it a try!
(As much as I like the art direction of Souls & Bloodborne games, I hate scary games and the slightest hit of scary thing, turns me away)
60% inc.
I really dislike Lords of the Fallen's clunky movement and combat and I stop playing after 2 bosses... I wonder if this game has the same issue?
