Prior to this I was a double major in Community development and Economics (and Demography). @@Quesadiyah Hi sis thank you for responding to my comment. I would suggest Capetown as the first place can visit its beautiful but you will learn alot about the urban poverty experienced there by people living below the poverty line. New York times was not lying when it said Capetown is the most unequal city in the world and you will see that for yourself if you go there. the city itself is beautiful but due to our history (apartheid regime) most people who may not have been exposed to higher education cannot move out of the homesteads that were previously racially segregated so you will find that certain racial groups live in one area (High crime rates) and other more affluent groups live in secluded surburban areas. Capetown also has really good food and wine spots if youre into that kind of thing. I would also suggest you got here between September to November when it is abit warmer and would discourage you going there in december as it will be the festive season and the prices will skyrocket and you may not get the full experience honestly because many people wanna go to capetown same applies to Durban which is my next recommendation. However if you are looking at going to a place full of exciting things to do and maybe learn about the Zulu Kingdom try going to Durban in KwaZulu Natal, there is the beach there and very beautiful accommodation there with a host of things to do. I have lived in durban for 4 years and i have enjoyed being there simply because the weather there is absolutely amazing, its never too hot or cold. Durban is not as vibrant as Capetown however it does feel like a home away from home. I am sure you will love it. The third and last recommendation is MPUMALANGA . This recommendation is my favorite out of all of the ones i mentioned as it is away from the beach and it is in the heart of South Africa it is just below Gauteng and shares a border with Swaziland so you will be surround by people of different cultures (Ndebeles, Zulus,Swazi people) more than anything it is home to some of the best nature reserves in the world. Mpumalanga will give you the complete African experience. other smaller towns you can perhaps look at that are similar to Capetown and Durban but a lot more tranquil could be Knysna ( particularly Tsitsikama National Park) it is between the Western and Eastern Cape provinces and Richards Bay it is just a few hours away from Durban KwaZulu Natal and forms part of Zululand, it has beautiful beaches and has historical landmarks that are connected to the Zulu Kingdom. Wherever you decide to go sis i am very sure you will enjoy South Africa is a beautiful country all round and it caters to everyones needs you just need to find places that speak to the experience you want to have.

Would love to see you working with and/or as a developer. You bring the focus back to the people in the community which is often lost when developers are proposing projects for a site. I learned a lot of this video so thanks for posting!
In terms of your work searches question. I have been searching for a while and I worked on campus, I managed to get a job as a junior development economist (not really what I’m passionate about, I really wanna work in community development) however I’m definitely enjoying learning about local economic development from the private sectors point of view as well as property development. Hopefully one day I will also get my dream job 🥺

Do you think working in government instead of private companies would be more community-conscious? I am in my undergrad currently, getting a Geography degree. My main goal right now is to work in the city government, particularly here in Rochester, NY. Obviously, that could change, I just feel like working in government feels the most ethical way and I'd love to hear your thoughts.

@@Quesadiyah so as an planner you don’t focus on the aesthetics at all? So urban planning seems to be focused more on the sociology part of urban areas. Is that correct?
@julia z Aesthetics is also part of Urban design… there are actually various discipline under Urban Planning it’s just based on what discipline or field you find yourself in …it’s a broad Job

I don't work as an urban designer, back when I was choosing grad school programs I thought about doing a design focus rather than planning

Is it possible to become urban planners without good skills in writing
Urban design would probably be more suited for you. Some urban planners work directly in policy/making recommendations so writing is essential
