@pogo8050 All the time when you went out for a ride or to a party you would hear some new shit and not know who it is, endless, you didn't even know where to start to get to know all the good shit. The albums with song after song blowing your mind are the all-time legends, the chronic, doggystyle, the diary, 36 chambers, cuban linx, dirty, all eyez on me...
People wonder why rappers back then had so many bars with unbelievable lyrics. I’m 43. I was a teenager when some of the greatest rap artist emerged. I saw the incline, peak, and decline of rap. Well, perhaps lyricism in rap is the decline part of it. Here’s what I believe happened. There was no internet and no social media platforms. To get heard these rappers had to sharpen their skills by writing and rewriting rap lyrics and practicing freestyle. They would battle other rappers in homes, alleys, corners, and at clubs. Some people got booed into greatness. Taking a rap battle loss meant either quitting or keep practicing. The ones that rose to the top never stopped practicing so they could destroy everyone lyrically. Then they would put out a tape and sell it out the back of their cars. They would also approach radio stations to play their music so it could be heard. It took a lot of hustle to get a deal and be heard. That meant only the cream of the crop made it in most cases. With the invention of the internet and social media like RUclips, everyone can be heard without practicing. Plus for some reason the look and background of a rapper became more important then ability. Beats and the persona moved to the front and lyrics got pushed to the background. This has happened to other music as well, but I mainly listened to rap starting with the Fat Boys back in the mid eighties. If you made it this far I have three recommendations. Apostles warning, Still shining, drop a gem on them. If you haven’t heard these songs yet, enjoy.
@Joey Saza Your analysis is on point. That’s exactly what it is. Anyone today can get themselves exposure using social media. But I’d have to add that back then, everyone had a grittiness or rawness that seemed real, with their own unique styles and personas, unlike today’s personas that come across as artificial or manufactured. Definitely a whole ‘nother level back then...

A quarter of a century since this and it still MORE than holds up. The mid-90s was insane for hip hop heads. All Eyez On Me, The Score, Illadelph Halflife, Beats Rhymes and Life, It Was Written, ATLiens, Reasonable Doubt, Stakes Is High and Hell On Earth all turn 25 years old in 2021.
Man the way he comes on the track is just too cold. There’s a war going on outside no man is safe from, you can run but you can’t hide forever. So iconic.
You know I'm from Russia, we didn't have rap in the 90's, someone managed to get it cassettes with onix, wu-tang clan, mobb geep. I'm in my late 30s now, but I still listen to this music. Music from the ' 90s.Rap 90's is the best that was. Modern music, it's full of shit. Respect from Russia.
im from croatia and thankfully we did have american rap but not that much you had the popular guys like ice cube nwa and that. we also had our own croatian rappers and rap groups. 90s in croatia tho were pretty fucked alot of drugs (back in the day a gram of weed was cheaper than a pack of cigs) and alot of poor people, and just alot of people moving out cuz of war. thats atleast what i heard from my parents, and yeah i like listening to both croatian and american rap.
@@zgudarac86 1990's balkan wars in former Yugoslavia was hell on earth. My g/f's dad is from Serbia so I know alot about that war. Its sad because stupid politicians started those problems and then all the good people of Yugoslavia of that time suffered...no one wanted war. That is the past, people need to let go of hate and love their family's, life is short. Good that you have some Hip Hop culture go over there. Peace.
Andre Lopez totaly agree i listen to a few new school rappers (mostly croatian) and they are preety good, but the 90s has a special place in my heart and it was the golden age of hip hop.

As a 19 now listening to mobb deep for the first time I am loving old rap more and more 🔥
Once you actually listen to the old school rap that was coming out back then you’ll understand that this was truly a golden era.
I understand this, but this kids nowadays will never understand this!

Hey Now You A Rockstar Satan vs Us
A quarter of a century since this and it still MORE than holds up.
Word! this was and still is on top of the game! The Apex!
No matter how old this is it will always be dope, the baseline by itself kills any of today's skip hop
Youre damn right! Todays rap its all gay autotune shit
If you bumping this in 2019, you a real one !

Before mumble rap destroyed the game. This is true rap
Man the way he comes on the track is just too cold. There’s a war going on outside no man is safe from, you can run but you can’t hide forever. So iconic.

The legends of the 90's never die.
Miss the 90s
Peace.
Andre Lopez totaly agree i listen to a few new school rappers (mostly croatian) and they are preety good, but the 90s has a special place in my heart and it was the golden age of hip hop.
respect from serbia brothers
Canada. Growing up with this was sweet. It is surely unfortunate the state rap/hip hop is in. To bad the internet happened or you would just be getting into the shit stage.

The song has so dark and brutal raw vibes. IT feels like.. you're getting ready before some war, going to the ring or for some crime deal.
For me it has both!#Duality 💜🔥🙏🏽
Everybody praises Shook Ones, but I so much prefer this song.
Beat is better IMO
They're both dope as hell
I feel that!
I prefer ‘back at you’
100%. More dark & grimey. Plus I believe the beat is better.
