Bryce on Where Do The Dinosaurs Fit In? - Harmonizing Science and Religion

  • There seems to be a prevailing idea that science and religion are at odd with each other; that they cannot both be true. Here Bryce refutes that idea and proposes two theories that, if true, show a perfect harmony between them. Bryce’s intent is NOT to proclaim what DID happen, but rather what MIGHT HAVE happened. If his theories are plausible, it demonstrates that whatever DID happen was in perfect harmony with both true religion and true science.

Never had a problem with science and religion. Most of the arguments against science is, at the end of the day, a matter of interpretation or based on fundamentalistic views
Back in the days before I became a Latter-day Saint, I used to listen to hardstyle. I remember one lyric that said:
    "Science and religion
    Two sides of the medallion
    Experience the truth"
Let's just say it probably wasn't the intention with the music, but that part just felt right and became my life philosophy, and eventually led me to the church

I like these a lot. My wife and I both have bachelors degrees in neuroscience. We love science, and we love our faith! And we both feel very comfortable that gospel truths are true. Even when we don’t fully understand how they harmonize… yet. We fully believe that, eventually, everything will be harmonious. Some “truths“ of science will fall away, Others will be added, and things that we thought we understood about the gospel will be expanded in majestic and very encompassing ways. At our house, we often talk about how excited we are to take “Creation 101“ and “Real World History 101.”

A few questions to consider. What if the method of carbon dating is incorrect? There is an established scientific community and a non established scientific community. There is a whole group of scientists out there that look at the same data through a biblical lens. They are called the genesis creation group. They should be added to the conversation to fully consider the age of the earth. The other thing to consider is that the established age of the earth is built on certain assumptions that the half life of the atom was the same now as it was back then. In essence they assume that the aging of things has always been the same and atoms have received the same amount of carbon. Another thing to consider is that the elements of the earth have been around for eternity. The matter was not created or made and was only organized. I think if we consider these things we can see how the young earth theory is a viable option.

Looked down through the comments and didn't see anyone say this so... An engineer's main problem with Charles Lyell (geology) and Darwin's (animal/life) theories is that their express claim is that the layers of the earth form gradually at more or less constant rates over long time periods.
That is wrong. Nature does not move at constant rates. The rate of change - changes. Climate change whether natural or man made speeds up and slows down under various conditions.

My theory. Whenever I see things, like dinosaurs “dated” long before possible for our Earth, I simply see our Father is a “master recycler.” He gathers matter unformed and forms it. So perhaps the crazy things we find are just leftovers from another project. Ever see someone create works of art made from recycled junk? God is the master of science, art and creation.

I recently purchased and read the book titled "The Kolob Theorem", by Lynn M. Hilton, PHD. It is another very enlightened man's "Theory" of how science and religion can be joined at the hip. It is not a new book, but it answered a lot of questions for me, and it, too, is so very plausible! In this book, the center of the Milky Way Galaxy is where the governing start of our galaxy, Kolob, is, nearest to the throne of God. Around the very bright "Celestial" cluster of stars at the nucleus of our galaxy there are clouds of stellar dust that form a veil which effectively separates it from the next ring of stars and planets (the middle ring of the galaxy) that form the boundaries of the Terrestrial worlds (without number). Outside of that in the Outer ring is where the Earth and our Sun are currently, along one of the long spirals of the Galaxy, revolving around Kolob along with other Telestial worlds (without number). The theory is that the Earth was first created near Kolob, as a Celestial sphere. It was moved through the clouds of dust into the Terrestrial ring when the Garden of Eden was formed and Adam and Eve placed in it, so it had to undergo a transformation (as you presented) into a different dimension. That transformation would have included it "picking up" Terrestrial baggage, matter material, bits and pieces of other earths etc.. There, the earth travelled through space with The Son, its creator, for a thousand years...(give or take). Upon the fall of Adam and Eve, the earth passed out of the Terrestrial ring into the Telestial outer ring, and into orbit around the Sun, because they had to be removed from "The Son's" warmth and light. Again, another huge transformation, and again picking up Telestial debris and matter it did not contain previously. When Christ returns (very soon) and the earth enters the millenium, it will pass back into and through the Terrestrial ring in the presence of "The Son", (again, for a thousand years) and shedding its Telestial corruptible matter (being Renewed and receiving once again its Paradisiacle glory), until it once again it passes into the center ring and is transformed into a Celestial World in the vicinity of Kolob, and God the Father. That is very reconcilable to me! It also would explain how God was once a mortal man, in some other Galaxy, with its own Kolob-like governing planet, and so forth, and how things might play out for righteous men and women who "inherit all the Father hath" can eventually carry on the same pattern through the gift of Eternal Life.

Love your work Bryce. One possibility I've considered is that the Garden of Eden could've been a terrestrial world (possibly 100s of miles, so as to be like a world for them) while the rest of the world existed in a telestial state either aging over the millions or more years that Adam and Eve were in the garden, or at least aging at an exponentially faster rate or a telestial rate...then Father took the garden from the earth...when they were cast...and the skins taken from possibly a sheep outside of the garden...to cover them...

  • @LearnerOfLight

    Those are very interesting theories.
I love ‘em! Especially the multiple Earths, and we fell from the Terrestrial to the Telestial version. That’s interesting.
I also like a recent theory, that’s based on some fairly recent learning. What’s recently been admitted by some scientists in the realm of geology, that fossilization can happen at a rate of minutes, to millions of years. They are now admitting that it does not take millennia to turn bone to stone. It just depends on how much calcium (& other elements that I can’t remember) are in the water & earth that covers the bones. If that’s true, then the dinosaurs aren’t necessarily millions of years old.
In fact, recently discovered ruins of ancient cities which appear to have been buried by a cataclysm deluge of water & mud, show relief carvings of long neck dinosaurs, stegosaurus’ & other Dino’s, living at the time of people - some of which were used as beasts of burden. The Bible also mentions beasts that have descriptions similar to dinosaurs. The theory is, maybe
Dino’s were around in the time during the Garden of Eden, eating vegetation, then the fall occurs, & the Dino’s begin eating meat, and ppl kill them off the meat eaters as quickly as possible, leaving only the veggie eaters for help in building things like the pyramids, then the flood wipes out the rest of the Dino’s, except sharks & crocs & gators & monitor lizards & shoebill storks. All those creatures still look like they’re from prehistoric times. Yikes! :) - - I like all these theories. But this one, where we learn that fossilization can happen in a very very short period of time, to me it lends evidence to our belief in a young Earth.
Even so, fortunately for me, my testimony leaves plenty of room for my favorite theories to be wrong. I’m thankful that Christ has risen & He will return soon! Let’s all stay prepared for this truth! :)
Thank you for the amazing videos!! ❤️

Velikovsky in the CES Institute manual (How old is the Earth) supported an electric universe theory which led to the Polar Configuration theory which is more inline with the early Brethren's teachings. No need for fanciful multi dimensional or parallel timelines mathemagics. Simply correct interpretation of ancient history found in the records, traditions and sacred rituals. Anthony Larson - Mormon Prophecy.

    • @mark.pinnell
      @mark.pinnell 3 месяца назад +2

Your first theory is close. The gravity increased with the fall (break up of the Polar Configuration) which the dinosaurs couldn't survive in. I think this massive change also changed the electrical environment which makes dating methods look like changes occurred over millions of years but they actually occurred very rapidly. The SAFIRE (Aureon Energy - Offshoot of Thunderbolts Project which Velikovsky inspired) plasma reactor can increase the decay rate of radioactive materials from millions of years down to minutes.

I'm a big fan of the EU theory as it tends to align, as you state, very well with revealed truth. I find it "funny" that many of the folks who write the EU material are ardent atheists, which in my view, gives further credence for a neutral position from our perspective. Specifically, they would never intentionally support the Scriptures, or doctrines of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

Brother Dunford, thank you for creating this video. I used to attend your weekly discussions and always enjoyed your thoughtful insights and "deep dives" 😊. Your love for Heavenly Father, the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and His restored church have always been apparent, and your ability to interpret the scriptures for the spiritual benefit of others is so appreciated. I especially appreciate your humility in presentation and for your wisdom in NOT declaring these theories as absolute truths, but rather offering them as ideas to help settle the minds of those of us who are sometimes "over-thinkers" and enticed to go out on the "weak branches" of our telestial-reasoning...
The Prophet Joseph Smith is purpoted to have offered this caution to the early Latter-day Saints:
“Don’t climb to the extreme branches of the tree, for there is danger of falling: cling close to the trunk.”
Others have expounded on this caution, thinking it wise to avoid the vain mysteries and imaginative speculation.
Truman Madsen added that, Joseph Smith made a distinction between the mysteries of godliness and vain mysteries, that is, the mysteries of Godliness pertain to the deeper things that can only be known by revelation to the soul on the how to live a godly life and thereby attain to the Celestial kingdom, versus the vain mysteries being the speculative pursuit of matters that are without profit to the soul, or atleast the soul in its current telestial-state of progression.
I think the dinasour question falls into the latter category only because knowing the answer doesnt really profit the soul in its progression towards the Celestial Kingdom, and knowing for certain would mostly just satisfy the mind and quiet the religious critics (which one could argue would be helpful 🤗). That said, I think you making this video is a great thing because it helps give some confidence back to those individuals who have gone out on weaker branches and now question the reality of the nature of the tree itself and are struggling to climb back in latterly towards the more stable branches of the Gospel tree, where they might continue their vertical climb and where clearer views are made possible. In this case, your video is very valuable and I believe can be the means for some to hold onto their faith and confidence without giving up their testimony of the truths they already know and risk giving up on their heavenly pursuits altogether.
Truman Madsen offered this additional clarifying statement and quote from the prophet,
Joseph Smith said, "I advise all to go on to perfection, and search deeper and deeper into the mysteries of Godliness.”
Madsen added, "The vain mysteries are those of which we know nothing and need not know anything-whether, for example, the pearly gates swing or roll, or what is the ultimate destiny of the sons of perdition. "Cling close to the trunk.”"
This comment is made from my tiny mobile phone, so please excuse my errors and message structure. It's difficult to review the complete comment and edit appropriately while having to scroll for redundancies...
Once again, Im thankful for your brilliance and your testimony of the restored gospel ❤ I also know The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is true! I know that the Book of Mormon is the word of God and in it we find the pure teachings of Jesus Christ that will lead us in the direction of Eternal life to live with God (for those who want to know what Im refering to, see the clear instruction given in book of Alma Chapter 5). 🙏🏻

I believe there could be other possible theories as well. For example, what if the scriptural teachings of the creation are at least partially symbolic? It could be that the creation accounts in scripture are meant to help us understand important spiritual truths, even if not every single thing is to be taken absolutely literally. Another possibility is that the Earth is actually ancient, and that a lot of things occurred on under the direction of God for many eons before God placed man on the Earth in another creative phase. What if, some things that are labeled as “evolution“ did take place, but were Separate and distinct from other creative acts in which God engaged to intentionally bring man to the earth? So often there seems to be an either or presentation… What if it was both? Both things occurring on the earth that science today has labeled as “evolution.“ And God directing other creative acts separate. Years ago, I completed a year of PhD studies in neuropharmacology and remember working in a laboratory and thinking how interesting it was that a scientists can use their knowledge of what they labeled “evolution“ (such as an understanding of the natural mutation processes that occur in DNA) to intentionally direct specific and desired outcomes in a laboratory setting such as inserting foreign genes into cells that you are studying, etc. This is accomplished by understanding the process and natural function of the cell. Science might include these processes as “evidences of evolution” even though an intelligent human being can take advantage of their knowledge of those principles to cause a desired outcome.
One place that I think science goes wrong is assuming that everything in science has to occur without the creative oversight of a God. I know for a fact that humans who know a lot less than God does utilize their rudimentary knowledge of scientific principles to cause all sorts of predetermined outcomes in laboratory settings all the time. That makes me think that it should be no stretch to believe that God could utilize an infinite and perfect knowledge of law that we can’t even begin to comprehend, but very real cause whatever outcome he would like to… And we wouldn’t necessarily even be able to understand it because we don’t possess that higher level knowledge and understanding of those laws… Yet.
For the record, I tend to believe that man is the literal direct creation and spiritual offspring of God. And that if there was any kind of separate evolutionary process going on on the earth, it was either under the direction of God or allowed by God, in addition to his own directed creative efforts.

Thank you for your efforts on our behalf Bryce! It is my belief that what we call "science" is actually a Universal Law that governs all things. I believe that God created all things under the precepts of this law and that not even HE can circumvent these laws or He would cease to be God. There is no separation between the gospel and "science". They work beautifully in unison. One does not exist without the other. ❤

Interesting!!! I can’t wait to learn what really happened one day. The Gospel found in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is incredibly stimulating, both spiritually and intellectually. I can’t wait to experience this in totality one day, as I am allowed to learn more and more in the future.

Thanks for sharing this. This can be a very helpful video for folks who don't want to abandon either religion or mainstream science. I agree that one can embrace both without abandoning one or the other. Ben Spackman has also done some excellent videos on this topic on 'Saints Unscripted' and 'Mormonism with the Murph', regarding how the theory of evolution has been dealt with by past and present church leaders, and why we should be open minded with regards to that theory as well as to the age of the earth, as you are proposing.
I agree with your theory number 2, starting at 27:27. I have come to a similar conclusion over the years, with some variations to your theory:
    1) I think a theory like number 2 is more plausible than believing that the entire universe was created by 'chance' and that there was no intelligent creator(s). You mentioned early in the video that is was 'just as plausible'. :)
    2) I'm not sure that the ancient fossils will just 'go away' beginning with the millennium. I see it as rather a 'merging' of the current telestial dimension and the new terrestrial dimension, that both will become 'one'. That's a minor detail though and I'm pretty open minded about such things. I'm guessing we'll all be surprised to one extent or another when we find out the true nature of 'reality' and the past history of our earth and others like it in the universe.

    Things to note:
We don't know how long Adam and Eve were in the Garden. It's possible that they could've been in the Garden for hundreds of thousands of years and more until they partook of the fruit.
When creating the earth, it's possible that the Lord used remnants of other planets to create the earth.

I thought it could be possible that the dinosaurs lived on other, old & no more used planets. That would be part of the "unorganized matter" that the Lord gathered when He was making earth. That makes sense to me because those worlds w/ dinosaurs were much older than ours, which would explain the dating. It also makes sense to me because every once in a while, I'll hear scientists discover dinosaur bones in one area of the planet that is different than where they found other bones from the same species. I just think, "Well, yeah, if Jesus pieced it together, the fossils are not always going to end up in the same place!" 🤷‍♀️

An interesting take on some key scriptures that I have been studying for a few years. I only see one (possible) incongruity with your theory. If the dinosaurs lived on a terrestrial planet, they would have been susceptible, as you point out, to terrestrial laws, including the terrestrial law of death (in this sense a general passing from mortality to immortality). This means that they would have received their eternal bodies "in the twinkling of an eye" having been changed from mortality to immortality, never having "slept in the ground". For your theory to work, upon the events of the Fall, they would have had to leave their final judgment (their state after resurrection), resume a mortal state, and be buried in the earth for current scientists to unearth and discover. This means that a spirit, which is eternal, would have experienced two mortalities. Since the spirit retains what it experiences, learns, growth, etc., I find this concept problematic. This would defeat the purpose of that terrestrial death, thereby allowing them to be resurrected anew. Since we know from scripture that time is both linear and circular within each relevant sphere (being non-existent or unnecessary, I haven't decided which yet, in the eternal or celestial spheres), you can't have it be both simultaneously. This is what creates accountability - the presence of linear time - the beginning and the end. I don't think it is possible to introduce linear time into a circular timeframe, especially where the objects of creation have already "fulfilled their measure" and passed into the eternal. If this is the case, then the dinosaurs (and all terrestrial life) would have had two existences instead of the single one that is determinant of our eternal existence, thereby violating the law that governs accountability. I'm not doctrinally ready to give the Rebellious Third a second chance at mortality. Or I could just be off my rocker. Or both. Thanks for your thoughts...

    • @kraigfairhurst482
      @kraigfairhurst482 2 месяца назад

@@talkingscripture I had to go back and re-watch this to understand your perspective. I don't think the multi-dimensional Earth theory will hold up. We know from revelation that this earth fell to its telestial state when Adam and Eve did. No effort is made in scripture to separate Adam's fall from the Earth's, and in fact, for the Earth to be fallen, it must be the same sphere that was first organized and placed in a terrestrial plane. Additionally, we know that this earth "will be renewed and receive its paradisiacal glory", which I interpret as a return to its terrestrial state. Further, this earth will die before being celestialized as the abode of Christ in the eternities. All of these scriptures allude to a single earth passing between various stages of existence just as we know we do and will. I believe that God's ways, while not our ways, are simple in their understanding once we come to understand them. We learn line upon line, precept upon precept. I think the majesty of God's creations isn't in the science fiction of them, but in the pure simplicity of an eternal God taking a long-term approach (billions of years!) in working out our salvation. It certainly dove-tails with science easier that way, and He has nothing else to do with all His "time".
This brings me back to my original point - the dinosaurs had to have lived on this earth during its telestial existence only, as they would have had to die a telestial death (presuming, of course that our shared assumption of "terrestrial death" means translation in some form...), in order for their remains to still be here. Any terrestrial death would not have left remnants. Therefore, the telestial age of the earth might be a lot longer than we understand. We like to assume that after the partaking of the fruit, Adam and Eve were cast out immediately, but that is not supported or refuted in scripture. The record and the heavens are silent on that aspect. We know that God planted the Garden of Eden, which to me can be interpreted to mean a special reserve, a place set apart from the rest of the world (nice parallel there...). It would be a simple thing for God to create the garden as a type of "ark" that kept Adam and Eve safe within it, long after the temptation, thereby allowing the effects of the Fall to promulgate across the world for eons before they were cast out. With God, nothing is impossible, but He also doesn't need to resort to fanciful means either, Arthur C. Clark notwithstanding.

I think an easier way to reconcile science vs religion is to recognize they have different purposes and, therefore, use different language to discuss the same thing. The scriptures are meant to tell us about what happened and why it happened, but not how it happened. Science tells us how things happened, but not the eternal reasons of why the events occurred. To use scriptures to draw scientific conclusions is to use them for unintended purposes and is outside of their purview. That’s precisely why scripture points us to other records God has provided for us (ie. the geological record). The scriptures discuss things in very symbolic ways and shouldn’t be conflated with being a step-by-step history of everything that occurred. Just like we don’t look at a chemistry textbook for moral guidance, we shouldn’t look to the scriptures for an understanding of how God’s physical laws function, nor the mechanics of HOW the creation occurred.

Your theories made me think of a video I recently saw about what scientists call "retrocausality", especially the explanation given at the 8 minute mark: ruclips.net/video/WugRN6xe9XQ/видео.html.
The video talks about entangled particles, and how measuring one theoretically causes a retroactive action in the other, which sounds similar to your explanation of how the fall affected the Terrestrial and Telestial realms. Quoting from the 8-minute mark: "as soon as the measurement was made on the first particle, that decision was correlated back through time to the very moment where these two photons were created. Allowing that correlation to influence and embed, in both photons, so that they agree on their spin direction when measured at some future point in time"
I'm not saying this is an actual scientific explanation about what you're saying, but I do think it shows that we don't have the full picture from either direction of how the universe works, and there is some room for both sides to "think outside the box". I believe someday we'll see the big picture, and both sides will be in perfect harmony with each other.

you have put forth some very interesting hypotheses (not theories). I don't like making speculations. If you work in science, you have to go with the data. But neither can you let the empirical proofs lead you to deny things you can't prove, i.e. God, Jesus Christ, miracles, etc. Therefore, I let science be what it is but I hold fast to my faith and know that some day all these gaps and inconsistencies will be resolved. I like that you are trying to show that science and religion are actually parallel. I have always known this and I think Joseph Smith gave us the revelations to prove it! Thank you for your very well thought insights!

I like your theories, as you stated they are just as plausible as the big bang. It is helpful for me to remember the tenet of the modern scientist who state the principle I learned in school, "The present is the key to the past." This principle, also known as uniformitarianism, suggests that the processes observed in the current natural world also operated in the same way in the past. Therefore, by understanding and observing how these processes function today, scientists can infer and reconstruct past events and conditions. This assumption underlies much of the methodology in fields such as geology, paleontology, and archaeology. It allows scientists to make educated guesses about historical events based on current observations and to understand the Earth's history and the evolutionary history of life. You are basically pointing out a flaw of their theory, and conclusions cannot be made when considering the past world was in the Terrestrial State. All you have to do is consider the possibility of their clock, the half life of carbon atom, could easily be different in a Terrestrial world hence changing completely their conclusions.

I must confess that my own theory, though less complicated, sits better with me. Although, much like Elder Henry B. Eyring's father, I too believe that True Religion will always agree with True Science, because Truth is Truth regardless of which angle you look at it. . . . if not, then its merely still just a theory.
I theorise that the 7days of creation weren't yet set in "time" as we know it today, i.e 1000 years of our time to 1 day of God's time . . . but rather, I think the 7 "days" of creation were simply periods of time wherein a specific creation work took place. . . . so the days could have varied in length, and could have been as many as millions of years in our time which were reackoned as a "day of creation". Also, no one knows how long Adam and Eve dwelt in the Garden of Eden before they were cast out, which only then kick started the clock on time as we know it. Thus, these factors could account for fossils carbon dating to millions of years ago, rather than just the seven thousand years we believe the earth to be in existance. Those seven thousand years could be a measure of the age of the earth only from the time that Adam and Eve were cast out of Eden, just like Christians began to recon their time from the birth of Christ, another notible event in the history of the earth. . . . this sounds more plausible to me, because we say the Jesus Christ came in the Meridian of "Time" . . .If we believe we are nearing the end of days, then time must have been started with the fall of Adam and Eve since we are now only 2000 years since the birth of Christ . . . the other half of time on earth.
As far as Dinosaur bones being discovered, an alternate theory I have is that, as we know, matter can neither be created nor destroyed, and thus, when God created the earth, He did so by gathering matter that already existed. We often hear of planets or stars that burned out millions of years ago, thus the matter that He gathered could have been from similar planets that were already eons old . . .and within that matter may have already existed the fossils, or bones of dinosaurs which had existed on other earths. So in theory, dinosaurs may never even have lived on our earth, but simply could have caught a ride in the matter that was used in the creation of our earth.
But as you said, Im no expert or official mouth piece either 😊
This all said . . . "Frequency" is definitely among my favourite movies of all time🤗

These were both my top two theories as well. But I certainly do not rule out more complicated models such as Bryce mentions. After all, the phenomenal complexities found in the inner workings of the cell we are still trying to understand, as well as many other mysteries. I wonder if given knowledge of these mysteries of creation will either cause someone to stumble from too much information, or cause someone to have too much certain knowledge which will not require faith. In essence, letting the cat out of the bag. Someday we will all find out.
