  • UPDATE!!! - I was able to get off work early today and edit the video so it takes out the section at the beginning where i talk about corporatism and capitalism. I feel that rather than trying to re-explain what I meant, and upload a new video that folks may not see, it would be better to fix this one the best I can. I apologize that I offended so many people, I made a mistake in my script writing, I promise I'm not a communist. New version should be uploaded as soon as RUclips finishes processing.
    To talk about the Triple A Shovelware we've been receiving recently, I've decided to make a Quadruple A RUclips video. This is my warning to you - corporations do not support creativity, they support data driven decision making. Art suffers when subjected to big business.

    Hey everyone! Fair point was made to me a couple times -> I say Capitalism a lot in the video, and in some places I misuse it where I should have used corporatism. Corporations are able to operate like this, but its not Capitalism that is the cause, more of the environment that Corporations thrive in. I apologize for my conflating of the two, which heavily affected the quality of my discussion in the first half of the video!

      Respect for this comment. The free market is the best way creative products can succeed, be they movies or video games, whatever. What we all hate, however, is the commodification of creative products by publically traded corporations. The best we can do is recognize that we have the power as one of the world's most powerful capitalist consumer blocks, and stop supporting products and practices that don't suit our interests and support those products which do.

    Not to be rude Jack but corporatism and capitalism are two different things.
    All these bad AAA products are the result of heavily subsidized corporations because they practice DEI and have generally close ties to the government. This is called corporatism.

    • @AllTradesJackReviews
      @AllTradesJackReviews  5 месяцев назад +7

      That’s not rude, you are correct! But I would add that corporatism is a product of capitalism. A free market where you are able to create a business around a product and practice (generally) freely without heavy oversight or intervention from the government means that good products will breed success and cause the business to grow. Eventually the business will grow to the point you are considered a corporation and as long as you follow some consumer protections, you are free to operate as your own entity. The government can’t intervene with your business decisions as long as it doesn’t break laws.

It's not that people are at "fault" for buying some of these titles. Judging by the way you put it, id say it's safe to guess that you've probably fallen victim to this marketing scheme yourself. As true as that is, corporations have developed so many shady psychological tricks and tactics to sell their product that the blame can't be put on the consumer alone - actually this has been another of these shady tactics of corporations, telling the consumer that they are to blame and they themselves just do what the consumer demands.

      This is such an awful way of looking at things, just imagine if you attributed this to everything you buy in your life, think of all the groceries you buy, what if you bought a can of crushed tomatoes and when you got home and opened it up and it was mouldy and when you got back to the shops they told you "well it's your fault for buying trash, no refund." Yet when it comes to video games we're expected to do research and see if the game is mouldy or not? No, the onus is on the person selling the product to make sure it's a good product, not on us to check with other people if it's a good product.

      I would say that Elden Ring is a great example of a product that is AMAZING, from a studio that is AMAZING, from a game director and creator that is AMAZING, and rarely has ANY bad games being released. So while its released under the same corporate structure, the risk in letting Miyazaki do his thing and making the next big game is much lower and the pay off potentially greater. I can just as easily say because of capitalism smaller teams geared towards building and delivering a quality product that surpassed expectations for many like Palworld, Lethal Company, etc. And there is no illusion of choice, there's always a choice. 0:43 - There is a definition for Capitalism _literally_ on screen. It doesn't say anything about rich people owning things. Capitalism is the concept of private property that is yours and yours alone because _you_ own it. It's not given to you by the state, you're not given permission by someone else, it's _your_ property. The alternative to private ownership is a system where you do not have property. Nothing is "yours". You are given things by someone in a higher position than you, and you'll like what you get.

      Capitalism is not just owning private property. It's owning private property on the means of production (factories, farms and etc). In socialism you have no right to privately own means of production, and in those cases it is usually collectivized and operated by the commune (but the collectivized company still belongs to the state, just not in terms of making profit off it)

      Capitalism is a system that inevitably leads to rich people owning everything and the wealth gap between the rich owning class (capitalists) and the poor working class (proletariat) widening. Private ownership is just one part of the system, but it's main purpose is to accumulate as much capital (money) as possible in as short time as possible to the shareholders. This is easily observable by looking at the biggest corporations operating today like Amazon, Apple or Microsoft whose revenue rivals that of middle sized countries. The power these kind of companies and their leaders wield is absurd and most people seem to be blinded to it (or just accept it as inevitable) as long as they get cheap products that are being produced in third world countries by exploiting cheap labor and destroying the environment. This is the true legacy that Capitalism will leave for the future generations to deal with.

    Yeah I couldn’t disagree with this more. You make the point that company’s aren’t interested in you as a player, but only in satisfying you so you purchase their game. Uhhh, yes? That’s exactly what I want? I don’t care about a company sharing my values or caring about me and coddling me. I ONLY want them to make a good product that I can enjoy. Profit incentives are not inherently evil.
    I think it’s disingenuous and jaded to insinuate that profit is the SINGLE ONLY motive these developers and publishers have if they hit a certain profit margin. I think the majority of game developers are passionate, and they want to make a good product at the end of the day. I think this even applies to AAA developers. Obviously there are going to circumstances where they release slop to make as much money as possible depending on their projected earnings, potential investment schedule, whatever else. I think there is an argument to made about this really having a bad effect on the industry, but I do think overall this take is a little TOO jaded.

  • @LurkingLarper
    @LurkingLarper 5 месяцев назад +1

    Probably not the best worded or presented video on the subject, but I found it much more directly addressing the core issue of capitalism as a driver for video game development. More often than not in video game business the quality of the product tends to decline (or at the very least fluctuate drastically) when the corporation goes public and has to bow down to investor demands. It happened with Blizzard, it happened with all the companies that Microsoft bought and it happened with EA and Ubisoft. The list is long and the message is clear that when you are trying to make a creative product like a video game under the demands of maximizing short term profits under capitalistic system, the results are often poor or unsatisfactory.
    I would hope that people gravitated more towards Indie games and other smaller double A projects that are more often made with passion and love for the art itself and not just to rake in more money. Good example could be games like Stardew Valley or Baldurs Gate 3. Larian Studio is actually not a publicly listed company and their CEO owns majority of the shares. He's also pretty based and has talked about this very same issue of corporate greed ruining video game development on several occasions. Food for thought at least.

    The issue is specifically neoliberal capitalism and the idea that publicly traded companies need to put the needs of shareholders above everything else. Those two things go hand-in-hand. Even in the 80s, at the start of the Reagan/Thatcher era that forced neoliberal capitalism on the world, it was called by a prominent economist as the worst idea in the world. But 40 years later, we're still under its thumb and things have only gotten worse.

    If you want better games from a AAA company stop buying their games and let them go under.
    This is the cycle of life for the gaming industry, if you want them to cater to you and not themselves.
    Every time a big game company goes under, anywhere between 3 to 6 new game developers come out of it, at least 2 will put out better games and maybe one will make a great game.
    Continuing to support these types of development companies in the hopes that maybe they will eventually put out another great game like they did in the beginning is halting the natural order and advancement of the industry itself.
    If you don't stop buying their games now you will continue to stifle creativity and innovation until all your left with is recycled trash like we have been seeing for years now already.

    This is an example of a video that makes sense on the surface but is woefully lacking context. It's easy to be angry at "muh capitalism" because it's so full of flaws, it's harder to go and read why Gollum ended up that way, and why Skull and Bones didn't get canned. You're not a bad person, but what a bad video.

    Capitalism creates the gaming industry. Capitalism is what made the golden age of console gaming in 2000s. They games that were good sold well. The plundering of gaming by corporate interests and investors who don't know how how gaming actually works is the problem.

  • @gonace
    @gonace 5 месяцев назад

    So the problem is not capitalism but greedy companies since we have incredible games that were developed under a capitalistic society like Helldivers 2, Elden Ring, Factorio, and so on.
    And the other problem is not greedy companies making bad games but consumers that buy bad games from greedy companies. Capitalism is only a set of instructions or a framework for how to conduct business but in the end, a company is a reflection of the leadership of that company and not a reflection of capitalism.
    I think that most people would agree with most of your points if you did not mix up Capitalism with Corporations.

    It's hard to blame capitalism or corporatism when plenty of asian - japanese, korean, chinese etc. - for profit corporations are still regularly putting out quality products which satisfy audience expectations, receive critical acclaim and also turn out to be commercially successful.
    The actual problem in the west is the perverted incentive structure that big publishers operate under.
    Normally, if there was no interference you would have to make a good product to get money. You make a poor product and you lose money. Your capitalistic success is directly linked to how many people you made happy with your creation.
    But as of now that basic principle was inverted. Let's say you make a top seller like Hogwarts Legacy. Great, you made money! Well, half as great, cause the government will tax those profits. But wait, if you put out a Suicide Squad next, sure, it might lose you money in of itself, but you can offset those losses by using it as a tax writeoff. Now you get to keep more of the profits from the good game (Hogwarts Legacy).
    So basically all game development and publishing is reduced to is to churn out flops to offset the fines you get from the government for your Ws.
    The current tax system is directly incentivising devs to make shit, they have nothing to lose
    In fact if one of the prospective tax writeoff live services ends up catching on, you can milk it for ages and have a platform to use for funding more tax writeoff releases, keeping the workers churning on more soulless slop, keeping on hiring more people, buying more studios, showing investors how much the company is growing.
    The fact that it's not growth out of market success but out of gaming the taxation (fine) system is not mentioned of course.

    I think you need to think more about AAA gaming than what you have, b/c even if you were to substitute "capitalism" for "corporatism" it's still misplacing the blame. I would point further to companies like Blackrock & Vanguard and their desire to create social shifts and "forced behavior" (their words not mine). Despite this, there's hope b/c that money is running out and corporations still have to deliver a good product - b/c at the end of the day it's the market that dictates quality & utility.

    Have you ever possibly thought that:
    1. some of the devs are actually incompetent like gamefreak compared to every other ninendo studio.\
    2. They've sunk so much money to a game they have to release it, in the pirate games case it was funded by Singaporean government so Ubisoft released it with a barrel loaded to it's head.
    3. In competent leaders and management that made development an absolute disaster.
    4. Bad games/Products in general tend to fail, there's some outliers but for the most part they fail thanks to capitalism.

    Capitalism does not exist in a vacuum or within an abstract Platonic realm of ideas. It is molded by those who administer the system, with greed playing a fundamental role. Every economic system possesses an inherent tendency to undergo natural evolution and transformation. Both corporations and individuals typically avoid competition. The rationale behind this avoidance is simple: competition threatens market dominance and profitability. It compels them to innovate, lower prices, and enhance service quality, all of which may diminish their profit margin :)

    Thats not just capitalism, social and communism are also parts of a market affecting the supply and demand for a financial incentive. If you had a socialist marketplace the government would regulate and sell a product that had someone receiving a financial incentive, regardless. Do you want a videogame funded and regulated by government solely, that game most likely is going to be absolute dog water and come out in 20 years? It sounds like you're arguing against corporatism.

    Never forget that capitalism also hurts the workers (the people making these games, their jobs, their futures).
    So much anger gets flung at the developers themselves so I’m relieved you pointed the finger at the capitalistic machinations of industry and not the workers.
    Also worth reframing games from a ‘product’ in our language and towards an experience/artistic piece/an actual game etc. when we talk about them. If we want to change the culture of games away from capitalism - then let’s stop calling these things products.

    A guy sitting in his basement making a game while running a patreon? A small game studio crowd-funding a game that fans have wanted to see but large studios won't touch? Both of those are capitalism as well.

    Capitalism does not demand these things. It creates a framework that encourages it at times, but it hardly demands it. It's rich idiots who need ALL the money in the world that torture the capitalism framework into this type of greed. And your statement that Capitalism squashes creativity is objectively absurd and completely wrong. It encourages it more than any other system in human history. Capitalism is why our species has advanced more in the last 100 years than it did in all ~300,000 previous years of human existence.
    Socialism, the only alternative economic system, is designed to suppress creativity. Because creativity is inexorably linked to freedom of expression - and freedom of expression and opinion endangers the socialist system. That is why all art in a socialist system is co-opted by the system to promote that system. Art loses free expression and becomes a tool only for spreading or protecting the ideology. Please tell me you've read any book that compares capitalism with socialism.

  • @BookwormCowboy

    I think its a lot more nuanced than you make it out to be. "Capitalism" has incentivized game creation, and provided the market for video games to prosper in. Without such a market, the games that exist today would be incapable of existing given the demanding set of resources required to make a game. I believe the issue lies in the fact that the gaming market has become so profitable, that developers in larger studios have to capitulate to publishers and investors who demand high profit margins and view games merely as investment vehicles. This has led to the inclusion of predatory monetization practices and deterioration in quality in favor of quick profit.
    I believe that a properly regulated and governed gaming market (one void of predatory business practices, such as MTXs, gachas and rug pulls) would better foster game development as a whole. Clearly not all is lost when AA and indie studios perform well consistently in the industry.
