I was lucky enough to get a used aigner fence for my Felder 700 Z. After using it and other aigner accessories, 100% worth the cost, new. It's just the small things, like the fingers on the fence. You save so much time and energy in such a simple feature. I feel everything I have purchased has had a bigger benefit vs. cost.
I’m looking for a spindle moulder just now. Thank you so much for doing this video. I hadn’t considered this make/model. Your information is fantastic and its obvious you have really considered all these options. Thanks again and i hope this works well for you.
You're bang-on with sticking to the same family. I have a Felder saw and shaper, but my bandsaw (SCM) and jointer (Hammer) can't share accessories without some modification. But I share things between the saw and shaper all the time. Had I thought of that at the time, that Hammer jointer/planer would have been a Felder 700 series instead.
That’s some beast, I think we would all love to have one in our workshop, I think you will be very happy with it, I have been lucky enough to work with one but that was as close as I got lol, great to see you getting back on your feet
That is a lovely beast. I have power drive on my AD741 and I absolutely love the thing! Hopefully one day I'll be able to purchase one of Format4 or Martin machines. Greetings from Croatia 😊
Really looks awesome can't wait to see it in operation also with router bits good luck with your new machines. Cheers Andy and Happy New Year to you and family and all viewers
Thanks for your videos and the effort you put in Andy! Super interesting to hear what you look for in a machine as I'm slowly putting together my first set of big machines currently. I can't wait to see you build those doors and windows :)
Nice review. The fence clamps look like a big improvement over the kip levers I have on my 5 year old machine (Profile 45Z X-Motion) - will check in to upgrading these clamp levers. Also, to change the speeds, there is no need to remove the side panel. Just pull the sliding table back and slide the cover back for access to the belts. Steve
Yeah it’s a great system, I keep some cutters and the hex key inside the sliding cover ( there’s a little ‘shelf’ on left). That way it forces me to open it which auto locks out machine but still allows fence/ height adjustment I love the format four! Still got my old rulong, bump and go fence and try try try height adjustment, the time saved in test cuts is incredible
We had those drop-in safety bars over the cutter block at the joinery where I worked some 40 years ago in Dutchland, and I think at school as well. A colleague failed to install them when he wanted to quickly run a (short) test piece. Cost him a finger and a half.
How’s it going Andy, they are some machine I have one myself, the digital fence the rise and fall are all the dogs bollox, super job, best of luck with her Andy, take care man 👍👍👍🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪🤙
I have the little brother to this one, the 700z. Boy this one has some really nice features, especially everything around that tilting hood/fence and the pressure/featherboard holder. I'd really like that feature instead of taking off that heavy hood. The power feeder being offset to the side on the jointed arm instead of mounted on the cast iron is also super nice. Excellent equipment with the profil! I ordered the router option with mine as well, so I could take the router out of the shop and free up some room. I don't miss the old router table at all. I also bought the (frankly overpriced) fingered-fence. It's really nice, but that price is nuts.
My Format4 feeder 4 wheel Vario did not have an overload protection so I blew the circuit. Get the overload protection and save some time. I later bought the Aigner fences and found the Felder people do not sell the 650 length on each side; so bought from a different dealer. The Aigner fence is faster, SAFER, and, you can get lots of optional attachments for special work. I have the router 2 speed spindle which lets me use all of those router bits I previously bought. I have special fab router bits that are cheaper than buying special knives. If you have the Aigner and router spindle you will find the smaller bits do not go with the motorized digital fence movement. So get some metal pacers of 1/4" plate steel and mover the whole flip up fence back 19MM (thickness of the Aigner fences). Trick in getting the spacers aligned. For the work I do which includes long stuff you may want to order the 1300 out rigger. Then, write your own book on all the new things you can do. Tenons are fast and easy on the Format4. I move the belt speeds to different pulley diameters and in so doing I cut a special window in the frame to the left of the removeable grate. Haven't had time to send the size and position to Felder so they can cut the shaper wall with the window.
The Felder horizontal boring machine has two threaded holes in the cast iron table for use with their hold down clamp which also fits into the threaded puck that slides in the cavity on your sliding table. I have two clamps and use them on the horizontal bore as well as the shaper slider to hold down wood pieces as I do profile cuts and tenons. I have purchased Swedish steel 10 ft round solid stock and machine shop metric threaded for cut down 26" posts for the Felder clamp. Can't tell you how many times those clamps have been instrumental in doing work 20" above the slider on the saw, shaper and horizontal FD 250. One clamp is not enough on the FD 250; just get too much movements. If your are in the Chicago area do stop by for a peak. I am running out of floor space and thinking about bolting the smaller machines up high on the walls! just kidding
I bought an older Felder Format shaper with slider table. Also got the high speed-2 spd spindle for router bits of which I had invested router bits before the Format shaper. Several people scoffed at me for getting the router bit spindle but it has been a valuable addition. I can get custom made router bits to do muntins, etc. so the HSpd spindle is great. Martin shapers are just too much tech for the line of woodworking I do and their sliding table is not that good for door work. My Format has the outrigger and that is good for tenon work and 3' X 6' butcher block island tops with custom profiles from templates and spindle rings against the templates. I compete against CNC shops with my outrigger and spindle-tooling with spindle rings. You remove the outrigger when your work does not require it or if you have the 2.5 meter table all you do is slide the outrigger to the left end of the table. I have used the computer memory very little but expect to broaden my scope. I cut a window in the box frame of the shaper so I may leave the vented cover plate off permanently and change speeds of the belt. That little window makes viewing the belt pulleys very easy and quick. Tempted to tell Felder to machine in the belt window on all machines. The Felder machine Format shaper I have does not have the fuse for the plug in of the Vario 4 wheel feeder. Talk to an electrician and buy the fuse and save yourself time and heartache. East to add otherwise you think the motor on the feeder is bad. I have plans to buy the brand of feeder using a track instead of 3 or 4 wheels. Track feeds smaller pieces and the cost is many dollars less than the Vario. Felder buys their Vario from another mfg and jacks up the cost considerable.
That all sounds great, quite interested in being able to swing across the fence away without removing it does that only work with a 2.5 meter slider. Also what is a track feeder? Do you have any links
It’s really good, can you only swing arm out the way if you have the 2.5 meter slider? Also what is a track feeder never heard of that do you have any links
@@ManorWood Good morn MW; the longer or short sliding table is not a part of the swing away action for the feeder. I will have to look for a track feeder as I have not seen one in the flesh. The advantage of being able to feed irregular or short pieces by the track appeals to me. In Chicago they have them for furniture mfg due to versatility. And, without the Felder markup seems like a good deal. The track feeder is 3-4" wide and is continuous like the track of a tank or dozer.
@@ManorWood Felder sells an extended horizontal toothed arm that fits almost any feeder at the X/Y axis $$$. When I sold my Vario 4 wheel I kept the extension toothed arm for use with the track feeder. I had the shorter arm that came with the feeder stand and fitted that to the sold item. I remember the extension are being about 9" longer. I am not talking about the swing away option. Just the arm that joins to the feed head.
Excellent vid as always! Out of curiosity: why does the cast iron base look like it's not "aligned" with the fence (left part of the fence when looking at the unit). It doesn't matter really, but it certainly disrupts my OCD... ;)

Not really a question about the spindle moulder however have noticed in the back ground you have switched from the tecnik stove to a normal wood burning stove. Just wondering the reason for this? Have just bought a sawdust burner myself
Just fire, as you may know our fire was no fault of ours was an electrical fault in the building. But I’m absolutely paranoid now I’m quite enjoying burning offcuts I’m thinking of getting a briquette machine for the sawdust. I’m just trying to make everything super safe and clean I’m also investing quite a bit in some nuts traction which will be seen soon to help reduce any XS dust

The big names in these tools are not always the machines that are game changers.

Best judges of wood machines are the big manufacturers and I do not see many Felder machines in their shops. That is a clue
