This movie really helped me cope emotionally as a child with my own scissorhands. It really made me feel like I'm not alone.

It's the best adaptation of Frankenstein.
It reminds me of how people treat people with mental health issues today, when they’re nice people are happy but if they start showing their mental health conditions that make them do not very kind things people immediately judge them and start a witch hunt instead of trying to understand that their mental health isn’t always perfect and try to understand and work with them. People don’t commit to understanding each other, the easy thing to do is judge others when they aren’t perfect.
Like the guy who calmly got on a greyhound bus and ate the face of a guy after decapitation. He's back on his meds and is out on the streets, everything is fine now!

Exactly! When i was 9 y.o (that was 13 years ago) i watched that movie for the 1st time, and after that I cut out picture of Johnny Depp as Edward and then i put ut in my diary and drew a heart. I still love him 😂❤️❤️

Remember being in love with his delivery for every intro during Mystery! on PBS. He was spectacular.
I got to see him do a poetry reading at a college in my small town back in the 70s I was amazed that Dr Phibes was in person still a fun memory

34:05, this part made me cry the most. Danny Elfman wrote an amazing score that's not bombastic like Batman, but rather gentle and soft.
The ending always makes me cry
Same here. I was single, rented via old Netflix DVD by mail. Bawled like a baby at the ending. Real ugly cry.
A beautifully placed crescendo.
We can see this universal message in many of Tim Burton's movies: Once again... society manipulated and almost killed a unique creature... just because once again for the human's greed and the desire for conformity.
What a twisted story with such a simple message.
Finally, most of the simple people of the village became the true monsters and the seemingly monster was the true human all the time.
As I said, you can find this message in many Tim Burton films: Edward Scissorhands, the Batman movie with the Penguin and Catwoman, or to take a newer one: Dumbo.
Yeah, this movie is def a timeless movie about the classic human condition. How something weird yet just as beautiful is something we can't comprehend.
How Jim never quit, and eventually drove Edward up to his limit is one of the most gutwrenching yet satisfying things I've ever seen.
And the funny thing is, no matter how many likes this comment gets, the phenomenon may as still happen
The movie wears it's heart on it's sleeve. This is Tim Burton's masterpiece, with an absolutely unforgettable soundtrack by Danny Elfman. For anyone who ever felt strange or out of place.

Great movie but it’s based on a book so it’s hard to call it a Burton masterpiece when he didn’t come up with the story. I bawled my eyes out reading it and watching it!

Yeah, without hands he drunk a bourbon double through a straw and then the dad gave him another that he also drank through a straw. That would make an experienced drinker light headed so it must have hit Edward like a booze train!

Holy moly. That's Vincent Price. I've never seen this, and didn't realize he was in it. Must have been one of his last roles.
This was his final film role, unless you count Thief and the Cobbler (which he recorded back in the 60s even though the "finished" film wasn't released until the mid-90s after he had passed)
It was his final role viewed chronologically. Besides that, Tim Burton was and still is a huge Vincent Price fan and begged for him to take the role of the inventor in this film. Well... Price accepted and took the role. The rest is film history.

This movie can really make you feel a lot of things because Edward himself sees a monster and he already gets scared of hurting people, he can barely stand to look at himself and only the people that know him truly know he would never hurt anybody intentionally unless somebody was trying to hurt the people he loves. It's sad seeing Edward and his self-esteem suffer. Truly a great movie
It's the classic Frankenstein story. Such a bittersweet masterpiece. Bittersweet is what Burton has always been, but it would not be the same without the legendary Danny Elfman making the magical scores.
Dassiswas-Glad I'm not the only one who noticed the similarities this movie has to the Frankenstein story, also Edwards romance with Kim feels like it might have been inspired by Beauty & The Beast.
"Living on the Autism Spectrum: The Movie"
I identified with this movie more than a decade before I was diagnosed, and the more I discovered about my condition the more this movie came sharply into focus. It remains my 4th favorite movie of all time.
I call this film, Batman Returns, and Nightmare Before Christmas (which he did not direct but is still very much his baby) Tim Burton's "Christmas Trilogy", and what I consider the absolute best works of both Tim's and Danny Elfman's careers.
This movie was a huge part of my life growing up, and will always have a special place.
Watched it every year since it came out - 30 year tradition now - and I still cry every time, and then cry even just seeing clips during a reaction. I hope someday I stop crying without enjoying it any less.

Amazing movie. Loved the part when they were being welcomed by our military!
It's a pretty good movie, but not very faithful to the tone of the very violent source material. It should have been an R-rated tribute to 50s sci-fi B movies, but Burton made it a bit too comedic so it became a PG parody instead. A lot of big elements from the Topps trading cards (like the giant insects and the destruction of Mars) were also left out.
@@Rocket1377 topps trading cards with the pink stick of gum were made near me, in Pennsylvania. A boy I played with as a kid in the 80s, his dad worked there. Always had extras and gum for us. Lol

This is such a good movie, Brendan! It's a fairy tale taking place in suburbia. It's become a cult classic. It has impressive makeup effects by the late Stan Winston. This was also actor Vincent Price's last film until his death in 1993 at the age of 82.
About to mention the same, This one is a must-watch for the fans of Vincent Price, as well as "Street fighter: the movie" is a must watch for the fans of Raul Julia.
Why did I mention Raul Julia? Because I want Brandon to watch "The Addams Family".

I loved the beginning when they were nice to Edward. Then I was so mad when the neighbor tried to frame him when he rejected her. He was hunted by the angry folks. I love Edward.

I like that you went from not being sure you'd like it because of Edward's appearance being off-putting, to genuinely enjoying the movie and liking his character. I think that change of heart is a microcosm for the film's theme/message.
I always found the inventor to be just as tragic as Edward. They implied he was all alone in that mansion making amazing inventions that no one would ever even know about. He finally made himself a child to keep him company but croaked before he could finish.
Speaking of Alan Arkin, Little Miss Sunshine is highly recommended.

So I went to Calarts, where Tim Burton went to school, and there was a lot of talk about him and the influence of the school on this movie. The school is on a hill in the middle of Valencia CA, which is just north of LA. The school is SURROUNDED by cookie cutter suburbs and some of the people there do not like the college. It really does feel like it's own little art fortress up above the drones. It was a lot of talk and I'm not sure how much of it is true. But I knew as a student there that we were kids from "that weird school". Danny Elfman apparently attended classes but was never an official student around the same time as Burton, so it's not surprising that they work together so well.

A beautiful movie, you really are doing yourself a great service going back to watch some of these greats.
Been a Burton fan since Peewee and never looked back. This is in my top three of many. The movie was very personal to him and it shows. It just works so well on many levels. There aren't too many directors who can get away with presenting a modern day fairytale. Best. Leo.
The look of death on Vincent Price’s face when he dies of a heart attack or something is just so haunting. It’s a moment of gothic patriarchal beauty.

This is such a beautiful movie. It's like a celebration and contemplation of what it is to be different and "weird". And amazing acting and soundtrack as well.

This movie has been with me since childhood and its meaning just got deeper. It's so beautiful. I think the casting was amazing because it's all in the eyes. He has such kind eyes you just see the innocence and love even when all goes wrong, even when he's an unknown stranger, frustrated or scared. He doesn't say much but his eyes say a lot. Side-note: when I was a kid we were on vacation and there was a sort of impromptu halloween party at a restaurant, all the staff got dressed up. It got a bit out of control with the scares and this mummy person was dead set in scaring us kids. It's funny now but at the time, me being the youngest, I started balling. My mom, quick on her feet saw Freddy Krueger, pretended it was Edward, and took me to him to calm me down. I got the creepy Krueger wave and was delighted! I remember that to this day because it warmed my heart! I was immediately at ease because "even if they looked scary, they were good guys", but also, I had never seen Edward being that playful, and wearing a sweater, mind you (even though it was summer). His skin scare had not improved I must say. It took me years to figure that one out lol

What’s crazy is that the jerk boyfriend was played by Anthony Michael Hall, who played the nerdy kid in so many John Hughes movies just a few years before! (Sixteen Candles, Breakfast Club, Weird Science) puberty really hit him!
Most epic growth spurt EVER! I want to see him go back to The Breakfast Club, and shock and intimidate John Bender!
In many ways this really is Tim Burton’s best movie. It features every element Burton loves to play with and it all works so beautifully. All of the humor, heart, darkness and sadness quite flawlessly blend together to make for such a uniquely delightful fantasy that always makes me cry. Especially when that incredible Danny Elfman score fully engulfs you by the end. If you are looking for other great Burton movies I would highly recommend Pee-wee’s Big Adventure, Sleepy Hollow, Mars Attacks! and Sweeney Todd to name a few. Pretty much everything in his filmography up until 2010 haha. Sadly Burton seems to have become a sad shadow of the filmmaker he once was but his past work is still as fantastic as ever.
It's been a while since I've seen Edward Scissorhands I can't remember how old I was the last time I seen this movie maybe 8 or 10 or something but I remember I really enjoyed it such a good movie !
Yes for the Nightmare Before Christmas as you mentioned. Also Corpse Bride that features the voices of Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter to be followed by Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Sweeney Todd has an incredible cast and it will be interesting to see how many you recognize.

I feel like everyone fell in love with Johnny in this movie. I think he is a genius because of how he was able to say so many things and say everything he had to say just with his eyes. He was and still is the most beautiful person on earth, not only outside but also inside. I hope he gets justice

one of my only complaints was that he said “ooh it looks like he’s gonna get lucky here” in “that” scene. No, he was not “going to get lucky” he was getting sexually assaulted and could have gotten raped if he didn’t run

I remember watching part of this when I was 6 and not understanding exactly what I was watching but I knew it made me sad lol and I loved it!
Danny Elfmans score for this movie is still one of my favourites. Especially ‘The Finale’ (I thinks it’s the music that she dances in the snow to) just love it! 😁

All I have to say, is that this movie is just so amazing and beautiful. I think the love story and gothic or old type movies that Tim burton seems to make really get me. I would say I’m a sucker and truly am in love with these type of movies like the corpse bride and this movie 🤍
I think this movie is what showed the world just what Johnny Depp was capable of as an actor.
That religious lady always reminded me of Carrie White's mom from the original 1970s movie adaptation of Stephen King's Carrie
The kid at the end was'nt the elderly woman's (Kim) daughter. It was her grand-daughter. If I recall,before Edward's inventor tried to give him hands,he homeschooled him. That's why everything is new to Edward. A lot of people thought that Edward killed his inventor by accident,throughout the flashback,because Edward's scissor hands were close to him. However,thank you for pointing out that the inventor actually had a heart attack. Many people back then would'nt catch on that. Now the reason why Jim framed Edward to begin with,was because he got jealous of Edward being with Kim. The whole idea of this movie,was to show people about isolation,and how it affects them,and being unable to communicate to others around. The character of Edward Scissorhands came to be from a drawing that Tim Burton made. Tim said that he was often alone and had trouble retaining friendships. Basically,the work of this movie helped him out. It was basically his cry for help,there pretty much. Tim Burton wanted it to be a musical originally,but dropped that idea. This was filmed in Florida. To create Edward's Scissorhands,Tim Burton employed Stan Winston to design the Penguin's prosthetic makeup,and it took 1 hour and 45 minutes to apply,including the makeup on Johnny Depp's face. The giant topiaries that Edward makes in the movie were done using wrapping metal skeletons in chicken wire,then weaving in thousands of small plastic plant sprigs. By the way,Edward only spoke about 169 throughout the entire movie. A single bell chimes six times when Jim falls to his death after being stabbed by Edward. The whole kid's bedroom decor at the beginning foreshadowed the plot twist at the end,if you payed attention closely enough. About the heart attack,poor Edward just could'nt understand what happened,which make it even sadder,especially when he said "he did'nt wake up". Peg mistakenly blamed herself for Edward's "attempted burglary",because when the bank turned him down for a loan to buy the salon,she had assured him that they would find another way to pay for it. Such an emotional movie, gives me goosebumps everytime I watch it, just like Seven Pounds with Will Smith, which I highly sugest if you haven't seen it yet!
they dont make films like this no more man the 90s was peak for unique art this was poetic/tragic/beautiful

I especially like the conceit of replacing the stereotypical torch and pitchfork-carrying angry villagers with pastel-colored polyester-clad suburbanites. The only thing missing was Conrad Veidt screaming, "Kill the monster!" Best. Leo.
You should watch Benny and Joon. Depp plays a character with a similar personality. Like a cross between Edward and Buster Keeton.

With all that money, he could afford to have it removed completely or to be modified it to something else completely but just removing two letters🤔............ it looks like he still has deep feelings for her, so he didn't remove it completely
I'm probably very late to suggest this, but seeing as its nearly christmas I thought I might suggest reacting to the original 3 'Wallace and Gromit' Short claymation Films by Nick Park. They don't have much to do with christmas but since they were all release around christmas time here in the UK it's sort of a tradition here to watch them every christmas. All 3 were nominated for oscars, the second and third both winning, the first being beaten by a another short claymation film called 'Creature Comforts' which was also created by Nick Park.
What an original, fantastic suggestion. I bet Brandon would appreciate them, and I guarantee that he'd be the first reactor to cover Wallace and Gromit. He'd also probably appreciate how the production values evolved from story to story. (Though the second one, "A Close Shave," remains my favorite.)

Brandon's reaction to the climactic scene from The Wrong Trousers would be amazing...but I agree he should watch the original 3 shorts, in order, then Curse of the Were Rabbit.
Also: are y'all aware there is a 4th short on the Wallace & Gromit complete collection called "A Matter of Loaf and Death" ??? More Wallace and Gromit is always a good thing
@WastedPo I agree to your assertion that Brandon would appreciate the jump in quality and evolution of the animation style from production to production... the jump in quality is so impressive.
Also: A Close Shave was actually the 3rd short! For me, it's a toss up between The Wrong Trousers and A Close Shave - both were of amazing quality, although I think I lean toward The Wrong Trousers because it was my introduction to the series, and that climactic scene is still just so amazing from an animation standpoint.
I see this as like a re-imagining, or modern day Frankenstein.

Sweeney Todd definitely deserves a reaction! One of the best Art-Directions in any film I have ever seen and arguably Tim Burton's Best film!
I just watched this movie last month for the first time and loved it! Glad to see that you enjoyed this movie.
Early 1920s German expressionist film and early American horror is the visual inspiration for all of Burton's work. Edward is very similar in look to the somnambulist character in The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari a 1920 German expressionist film. The set design for that film definitely inspired Burton's Beetlejuice. If you want to go really old school definitely check out some silent films from that era, they are very impressive.
