Not only is this the best rendition I’ve heard, he is liking all the comments!!! What an amazing performance, bravo! I’ve been listening to this nonstop.
I'm UK and i fell on this on a Saturday morning way back in 1998 ... The critics are critics because they (like me) ,,,,,,,,,, remember perfection !!!! ... When he wrote that .... heaven came to earth !!!!
I actually intend it as a tempo for performing, not for practicing (of course), but as your comment is anyway not offensive, you have the right to share your opinion ☺️ Personally, I don't see how to play on the beat the ornaments as required by Ravel playing much faster than this, I know many recording which are keeping the "original" metronome disregarding to perform on the beat the ornaments. Between the two options, I prefer to disregard the original metronome and play the ornaments the way I do. But of course, it's just my choice and I do not pretend to be the right one. Kindest regards.
I keep coming back to this video and now seeing all these beautiful comments I remember where there weren't any and i felt really sad but now I rejoice ❤️
im a huge fan of this piece. I have to say, i really do enjoy your interpretation the most. you are giving every note the moment it deserves. fantastic work!
I like the way you play this piece. Not showing off, you hide the technical complexity, and you make it sound simple and fluid. The choice of the black and white video also participates in the sobriety. All in all a good attitude facing Ravel's genious and particularly this piece. Personnally the speed of 92 will be technically impossible. I manage to play some parts at around 80. But you prove that slowing down to 70 or so, you still keep the magic of the piece, the continuous flowing,... Also the fingering you use actually suits me, most of the time better that what's printed on the sheet of music. So that was a great help for me while learning it. Thanks
Thank you very much for the nice comment, dear Yves, and I am very happy that certain aspects of my playing in this piece may suggest some good ideas about Tempo and fingerings to a colleague, it's most kind of you to say so! Best greetings :)))
Letting each phrase and passage sit and rest just a little bit longer in the mind before moving on does something to me emotionally that the faster renditions can't for me, considering the context of the work as a whole. It's a suite in memory to Ravels friends he lost in World War 1. it needs to have some somberness, some melancholy, at least in my opinion.
Totally agree - one of the best versions out there - the slower pace, sustain and fluidity are just wonderful...revealing its full intricate riches . Off to locate the album...
Thanks a lot for the very nice words, most kind of you! As for the album, I'm afraid it has not be reprinted, but if you'll contact me through my website, I'll be happy to offer you a digital copy or a link with the full recording :) Kindest regards
2:59 the way you play this part is just breathtaking and gives me goose bumps every time I hear this piece. Thanks alot for sharing! Greetings from Germany
Apparently, the tempo of a dotted quarter equals 92 was put there by Duran's editors. The piece doesn't breathe at that tempo. Indeed, faster is not always better. Lovely performance, and thank you.
Thank you so much for your appreciation! ☺️🙏 Also thank you for the interesting comment. I would be very thankful if you could send me the link or page were you read about Durand's editor metronome. Best regards
Excelente interpretación. Pude escuchar muchas cosas que en versiones muy rápidas no suenan tan claras como en esta manera de tocar la pieza. Felicitaciones!
I agree with Ebeneze Scrooge! Andrea Vivanets performance is Perfection..and well filmed! My young son who is 15,will be competing with this same piece this month, and has learned a LOT how to play it from watching this! He says if he even comes remotely close to playing it like Mr Vivanet,he will win! (Am looking forward to more of his posts and marvelous playing!)
Ebenezer Scrooge I agree on your comment that this beautiful piece is often played too fast. But this is a bit too slow, I'm afraid. According to Ravel that is. He put an exact metronome tempo of 92 for one and a half quarter at the top of the Prelude. Which is quite fast...
The way you played it made it my favourite piano song (at this tempo at least) Where can I learn it at this tempo ? Do you have some sources ? Incredible job by the way
Thank you so much, I'm glad! ☺️🙏🏻 If you like, you are very welcome to contact me via email from my personal website, so that we can discuss about musical things. Best regards 🎵🎶
Thank you so much for your appreciation!!! :) Most kind of you! About difficulty, it is difficult for me to say something about it, being quite a subjective topic- I may personally find some piece that is generally considered very difficult not so impossible to learn after all, as I may find not so easy to learn some pages of piano literature that are generally considered very accessible. On the other hand, about this Prelude I can say that there is nothing uncomfortable in its pianistic writing, and that it has the same clarity of the greatest baroque (and classic) masterpieces :)
@@Szpzer You are right on many levels..tempo is steady throughout and tricky to maintain evenly..with Ravel, the question is not necessarily how "hard" or difficult(although some of Ravel is killer hard) It's HOW Ravel is played and expressed..Vivanet obviously knows Ravel ,and how to play it
Best interpretation of Prelude on youtube(or anywhere else!) In general.this piece is played too fast in my opinion. Thank you for a wonderful performance! Ravel would love this !!
Hi, I’m 12 years old and I really want to play this piece. Please can you compare it to different pieces by different composers. It would be really helpful and guide me to my decision on wether or not I should even attempt it.
Hello, thanks for the message and I will be happy to answer to your questions :) Would you mind to write me at pianist-info@andreavivanet.com ? And please let me know what you mean for comparison, my apologies if I didn't completely understand your question - do you mean, for instance, what else could be useful to practice beside this Prelude? Feel free to ask me whatever can be useful for you, and I hope I will be of some help!Looking forward to read from you via email ☺️
On my opinion, as it is indicated by Ravel that ornaments must be performed on the beat, and a too fast tempo does simply not allow it, there is a choice to be made : either to play the original metronome, either to play the original ornaments, that means to play them on the beat, and between the two choices I definitely prefer the second one. It is an old recording of mine so it's quite possible that if I would restudy this piece today, I would probably perform it with more direction. However, with all the due respect to my colleagues and these who have a different conception, I just can not agree with the "standard" idea of tempo for the above reasons (and also because in a Prelude the harmonic path is what is main, structurally speaking, so I can't quite understand to go into a "bravura" performance focused on each semiquaver brilliancy...).
@@andreavivanet Sorry! I hadn't seen your answer. It is a magnificent piano, personally I have an old "Pieyel" from 1880. It is so old that it has become difficult to play pianissimo because the keys are hard to press ...
Perfect tempo! It really brings out the depth and color Ravel wrote. Im learning this right now and using this tempo.
Thank you so much, I'm glad! ☺️🙏
Can we talk about this man’s pedal work???? Unreal understanding of his instrument!
Thank you very much for the kind comment! 🙏☺️

Thank you, I'm thankful for your words and I'm glad that this conception sounds convincing to you! ☺️🙏

Surely one of the most difficult aspects is memorizing similar yet varied arabesques
At that tempo played played I felt the warmth of Ravel. I really enjoyed this rendition warm and flowing.
