For many years, the U.S.Army had a manual, DA Pamphlet 27-4, which prescribed the methods for both execution by firing squad and by hanging. That document contained a table showing the drop for a series of weights. The lightest weight was 120 lbs for which a drop of 8'1" was prescribed. The drop shown in this dramatization was, by my guess, not more than 6'. So, no, the drop would not be sufficient to "rip his head off" nor, considering his probable weight and the placement of the knot, would it be sufficient to break his neck. Btw, even with a clean break, it is possible for his heart to continue beating for up to twenty minutes.
b. "Upon the pronouncement of the death of the prisoner, the escort, with the band playing a lively air, will return to the parade ground and be dismissed." I've read that manual and what's odd about it is this: In a firing squad execution if the prisoner is still alive, a coup de grace is to be administered. In an execution by hanging, the prisoner is shown no such mercy. He just hangs there until he's dead.
Hanging should be quick and precise. None should dangle and strangle at the end of a rope. If one has ever been strangled short of sucombing to death it is a feeling of enrage. As God abiding people we should not be merciless even if someone may have been found wrong and has gotten the altimate punishment for their crime. Designing setting up someones suffering makes us no better then the criminal we are punishing. We must show mercy and make it quick and inheinous as possible. France and Germany method of capital pushishment may been quick but totally heinous and horrific.
Anthony Contares The truth is all humans are on death row . The irony is many people will die of a loathsome disease . Cancer, etc worse than any known execution .
in the video they said the pulse stopped after 18 minutes. With a firing squad and several high powered rounds to the chest your BP instantly goes to zero rendering you unconscious and then completely 100% brain dead in 3 minutes
This execution was botched. The noose was incorrectly placed (it should be under the left side of the jaw, to whip the head backwards) and the rope was too short. The intent of hanging is actually to snap the neck, causing instant death: however, the pulse can continue as a reflex for a time, like a headless chicken flailing around. In this case, though, because the rope was too short, and was incorrectly placed due to his struggling, this guy would not have had his neck snapped and would instead have been strangled.
18 minutes! I remember in the movie Pierrepoint, how he protested when the interval between hangings of German war criminals at Hamelin had to be reduced from 1 hour, to 20 minutes. That seemed to be in contradiction of the 'instant death' claimed as a result of his technique of the rope/hook arrangement placed beneath/behind the L jaw. If death was instantaneous, as we're led to believe, why even 20 minutes, half that would be more than sufficient. Strangle-hanging, in which death may take up to 15-20 minutes is barbaric.
Read about the female SS guards @ Stutthof Concentration camp , and how it took nearly 12 minutes to expire using a short drop method , which entertained the spectators , and became a festive occasion.
as an argument against the death penalty, this falls rather short. I mean, the state gave this guy last rites, a final meal/tea, cigarette if desired, a chance to walk and talk and pray with a cleric, if you're so inclined...how many of these niceties were observed by the condemned man in regards to his victims? I don't care which method is used, this procedure is more humane than life in prison.
Nawan, quite the opposite affect, really. It does, however, reinforce my opinion that our criminal system needs to be improved to make damn sure they "got the right guy."
If a killer dies for his sin his death is payment for that sin. He is therefore open to forgiveness and in line for a ressurection. Justice, unlike life inprisonment.

He shouldn't smoke those things are killers.
You place the knot on the left side of the jaw so it snaps the vertebrae so death is instant the weaker the neck the shorter the drop
This was simply death by asphyxiation not by breaking the neck.
