I used to think the same thing, but keep at it. If you practice just for ten minutes each day you'll be surprised how much you can learn in a week! Good luck :)
The reason you sucked was because you tried to play once. If you played two times you wouldn't be as bad, 3 times you might be good, and 1000 times you might be incredible

can you clarify what the strumming pattern is please? still having trouble nailing it down
Hey Tim, try hitting the settings button on the bottom of this video and then hit the playback speed and slow it down. It'll show you in slow mo exactly what I'm doing. I probably don't play the strumming pattern perfectly to the original but I just tend to listen to the feel of the song and get pretty close.

Theres like 2 basic chords and a tiny change in the bridge ,listen to the tune and work it out man - do you want him to come over and play it for you ?
