I did almost this exact upgrade in my 2000 XJ 3 days before this video was uploaded, the outlet I used has 2 QC 3.0 outlets and a digital Voltage read out between them. $14 on Amazon.
I did this on my WK already. I also did the same for the rear port in the boot (or cargo bay if U.S.) and added a switch as it was live all the time. Really comes in handy. Good video though. Simple and quick.
I have one of these in my Mazda protege5 and also in the armrest in my Subaru Forester, which I am going to swap the lighter port in the dash to one also. We need a few USB ports lol...
Awesome video! Quick question if you only have a power socket available, would that be ok or will that drain your car battery since it will remain hot without turning the ignition?
Just ordered this exact one for my 1998 XJ 2dr, and should arrive home in a couple days, but will have to install it on the weekend. Do I need to disconnect the battery before messing with the cigarette lighter? The one being replaced is the left one like you did it and I’ll make sure all power is off. Thanks!
@@OutJeeping yes, ignition and all power will be off during the job, but I’ll also pull the cigarette lighter fuse to be extra cautious, thank you for your reply back Austin !
As long as the ignition is off the left side power outlet will be off. If you are putting it on the right side which has full time power you can pull the fuse if your worried about working with live wires.
I’m thinking about getting an old wrangler for my first car and I was wondering if I get a usb installed will I be able to play music through the speakers with it? If you can help with this that would be great
You could if you are able to remove it without breaking it. Otherwise there are plenty of car socket replacements online that can get wired in as well.
It would still technically be turned on and you would always have that led lit up. It might not be a big deal for some people's car but over a long period of time it will kill a car battery if it hasn't been started in a while. It's always a piece of mind knowing that everything's off when the vehicle is off.
I only have one cigarette lighter on passenger side but an open space on driver side of the panel. If I wanted to install a USB there would I just solder into the existing cigarette lighter wires?
I have a 97 Mercury Mountaineer that I want to do this to as well.. Only thing is my 2 front cigarette lighter locations are different than yours. How could I know which one is the one that turns on only with the key? Also, I'd like to wire one in the back. How would I do that, just wire both outlets on the same wires? Would it be too much? Would be cool if I found one that the illumination only came when I turned on the instrument panel lights. Thanks in advance..
You could simply test the ports with a phone charger or multimeter to see if you got power. You can add power to a back outlet by splicing into the same wires as the front outlets as long as you don't plan to run too much power through but with USB ports you should be fine. I'm sure there may be an outlet that only turns on the light when dash lights come on but the one I installed doesnt allow for it.
@@OutJeeping Thanks alot bro. So u say just try the charger in each cigarette lighter with the SUV off, & the one that doesn't show it's charging, is the one I want to use, correct?
Bought one of ebay, jacked up the cigarette lighter shroud, wired it in, and it doesn’t work. It lights up but plugging in iPhone with multiple chords does nothing. Any ideas?
I did everything but for some reason the USB port won’t work. Is it possible that the connection to the drivers side cigarette lighter never worked to begin with? I made the mistake of not testing it before working on it.
Great Video! Good idea! I have a whole bunch of those plug in chargers although I never buy the cheap ones it would be great if it were built in. Were you worried about parasitic draw by keeping it live with the ignition switch off? I have kept my dual USB plug in style chargers plugged in for weeks at a time and seem to get by with it...guess I am lucky. But in the event that a ten dollar item from China burns your Jeep XJ down to the ground it probably is the safest way to go.
I just fitted one of these to my van and the light stays on blue light stays on even when the ignition has been switched off will this drain my battery?
Over a long period of time without the vehicle running it eventually would. I would hook it up to your ignition source that way it's only on when the ignition is on.
I'm curious, since the circuit is always powered does that mean that specific unit you installed is always lit? Or perhaps only when something is plugged in. Cheers!
I mentioned in the video that I installed it on the driver side because this Outlet only came on when the ignition is on. It would be always let up if it were on passenger side Outlet because that is full-time power.
@@OutJeeping Got it. When you said "always on...when the ignition is on" my mind thought "always on". That LED probably wouldn't drain the battery however I might find one without an LED considering it's nice to have full time power out of those ports. Cheers
@@erikcontreras7581 it probably won't kill your battery but it's always good to have a peace of mind knowing that everything is off, and with these $10 Chinese electronics you wouldn't want it to be the reason to have your vehicle start on fire from overheating or something like that
Yup it will cause paracetic draw but you could put it on the right side and tap it into the left side wires so it's only on when the car is on and keep the outlet with the same feature.
@@TobyTreo Probably won't if you drive it every day but for me personally it's better piece of mind to have everything off when the jeep is off, I wouldn't want to risk a $10 Chinese electronic to burn down my jeep.
There’s an easy way to remove that old lighter without destroying it... maybe check out another RUclips channel before going at something with a pair of pliers...

Great job Austin, looks great and more useful. There's always the other port if you must use a large 12v plug.

2 year after posting and still so damn helpful! just did it and its awesome thanks man!
Great job Austin, I definitely need to do this for my 1999 XJ. Thanks for the video.

I'm using this vid for a guidance on my Silverado, should be the same right?
Yup, just make sure you replace the socket that has power only when the ignition is on.
My friend has a 2019 jeep cherokee +a 2018 citroen c4 brlingo 5 Speed
Thanks for the idea. Just did this mod to my 98 jeep xj, super easy.
Should I unplug both battery connectors to kill any power before snipping the cigarette lighter cables?
As long as the ignition is off the left side power outlet will be off. If you are putting it on the right side which has full time power you can pull the fuse if your worried about working with live wires.
Will this allow a wired connection to an aftermarket receiver/infotainment system?
Not this one in particular, this is only a power outlet
I’m thinking about getting an old wrangler for my first car and I was wondering if I get a usb installed will I be able to play music through the speakers with it? If you can help with this that would be great
Only if the USB is part of the head unit, this is simply for power
Could you use the original outlet from the right side and put it on the left?
You could if you are able to remove it without breaking it. Otherwise there are plenty of car socket replacements online that can get wired in as well.
So what happens if a cigarette lighter socket is needed 🤔 can both a USB and a cigarette socket be installed in parallel. Thanks
Yup, you can install both in parallel.
Dremel is your friend when filing...
What would happen if you did it in the cigarette letter on the right? Would it draw power even if nothing was plugged in?

Use a multi-meter and test which wires do what. You may have an extra positive wire for illumination lights for the dash.
why didn't use the fuse that it came with?
The power outlet on the jeep that I am getting power from is already fused in the factory fuse box.
