Simona Halep breaks the silence, 6 months after she tested positive

  • Simona Halep has been provisionally suspended since October 2022 after it was announced that she had tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat. In this interview with Tennis Majors, the two-time major champion and former world No 1 says she has evidence to prove her innocence but that she has so far been denied her right to be heard by an independent court. She hopes her hearing will take place at the end of May.
Editor’s note on the authorities mentioned by Simona Halep during the interview : Halep identified the ITF (International Tennis Federation) as the authority in charge of her case, instead of the ITIA (International Tennis Integrity Agency), a new entity created in 2022 by the professional tennis governing bodies (ITF included), now in charge of the tennis antidoping program, in the place of the Tennis Integrity Unit (TIU), a panel once created by the ITF. Tennis Majors tried to reach both the ITF and the ITIA before the release of this article, but only received a proper response after the release. Then, a spokesperson for the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA), said: “The process is ongoing and is being run in line with the World Anti-Doping Code.” The International Tennis Federation (ITF) said it was not in a position to comment and insisted on the fact that the ITIA was in charge. Asked after the release of the article why Halep referred to the ITF, her lawyer Howard Jacobs responded : “There is no discernible difference in the way anti-doping cases are handled since ITIA “took over” from ITF - the same lawyers prosecute the cases, all documents are submitted through the same exact online Portal, it is the exact same pool of arbitrators, and the arbitrations are administered by the same exact agency - Sport Resolutions - which still as of today states on its website that tennis anti-doping cases are decided by “the ITF Independent Tribunal”.”

Yastremska was exonerated of a similar charge. She had reached a high of 21 in the world and the false charges caused her to plummet in the rankings. She lost a lot of time and money as well. The testing is not infallible. I am not a Halep fan, but I have believed her from the beginning. There is nothing in her past that would suggest that she would take a banned substance. She is too honest and too intelligent to try such a silly thing. You really have to be stupid to try such a thing when you know that random testing is too risky. Halep had too much at stake to try this and she never needed it before to be at the top of women's tennis.

@@gregorkokalj9326 There is a history of disreputable supplement manufacturers putting banned substances in their products - I can think of at least five cases in the last ten years. The manufacturer mentions a "magic" component in their publicity material, but doesn't identify it in the list of ingredients. Unless you have the resources to have the supplement analysed by a specialist laboratory, it is easily possible to consume a banned substance.
Halep tested positive for roxadustat. It is a new drug which was authorised for medical use in China in 2018, but not authorised for use in EU until late 2021. It was first detected in athletes during 2019. There is something and/or someone that is terribly wrong about that situation.

Simona so unfair!!! Hearings are postponed again and again
Tennis stars who have been involved in doping scandals in recent years, from the news of the suspension to the hearing, the time interval between two to three months is often between:
On May 10, 2009, Gasquet was suspended for testing positive for cocaine. The hearing was held on July 15; on March 7, 2016, Sharapova announced through a press conference that she was tested positive for meldonium. The hearing The meeting was held on May 18; on April 18, 2017, Errani learned in the email that he failed the doping test (letrozole), and the hearing was held on July 19
In contrast, in the handling of the "Halep case", the ITF procrastinated a bit strangely, and its actions to cancel the hearings many times are also puzzling. And Halep is also deeply puzzled by this. In fact, this is the main reason for her to speak out through the media this time. The long and futile effort broke the upper limit of her emotional carrying capacity. At the same time, she also wanted to know when she would have the opportunity to prove herself.

So glad Simona spoke up for herself. This entire case is suspect from the beginning. Her training, her personality, her style of play is to push her body so hard; it is clear that she would not suddenly (or knowingly) use a banned substance. Whatever minute traces were found, it is no doubt due to cross-contamination, from whatever is in our water system--which makes me think this is why so many delays...as the labs are confused themselves. That said, this prolonged ban is an archaic way to possibly wrongly be punishing someone out of the blue. She needs to stand up to defend herself. I support the hard-working, open to a fault, Simona!

There have been TWO INTERNATIONAL BREACHES registered with Halep !!!! Sounds like you don't know Halep and what her history is.
Don't say you have never doped when testing has been done and doping has been found. It may be a "surprise" to Halep, but she cannot simply deny the test findings. This just demonstrates IGNORANCE at every level. The world knows all about "doping". When players in ANY sport are caught, it usually gets PUBLICIZED. We, the public, have all heard it before ......AND SO HAS HALEP.
The only thing she can do is initiate her own personal "qualified and certified third party investigation", if she is going to claim she has "absolutely never doped" .....because NO ONE is ever going simply going to believe her word.
Not a good sign ....TWO INFRACTIONS ....!! Good luck with "proving" she has never doped.
Ever hear of LANCE ARMSTRONG? .....and there are DOZENS of athletes that have done the same thing.

Why would she start now at 30 years to rsk that knowing she will be tested and the result will come positive. That's suicidal and would be stupid . Uhm, the only thing Halep commented on was Sharapova’s wild card at her first comeback tournament. There were many players who could’ve been given that wild card and it would’ve looked better in the big picture. Maria was good enough to make a great comeback (and she totally did that).
Simona has never commented on Sharapova’s specfic case and she NEVER does that cause she believes the officials and the hard work they put in. Heck, Simona has always respected Sharapova as a tennis player, but she never really appreciated how cold Maria was. That to me seems very much fair. Maria has always been a cold person and that’s something that most players mentioned after meeting Sharapova…
Anyway, this time the same officials that Simona has always believed totally ditched her. They rejected Simona’s basic rights - she needs a fair trial NOW!

The following quote is for Martina Hingis: "it was revealed that Hingis had failed a drugs test at Wimbledon, and had tested positive for Benzoyleogine, a cocaine metabolite. She protested her innocence, and claimed that she had inadvertently ingested it. Furthermore, it was claimed that the amounts detected in her test sample were so small, that many contemporary test programmes, such as that used by the US Military, would have failed to detect it." Similar (though not same) narrative... She was banned for two years, ending her singles career. If your test is positive, you have done something: "I didn't know", "Someone gave it to me", "My drugs are contaminated"... Yeah, right.... For expert view check, Agassi, Hingis, Sharapova (A total 18 GS singles titles). For higher expert view, check McEnroe who never get caught.

“The tribunal accepted Halep’s argument that they had taken a contaminated supplement, but determined the volume the player ingested could not have resulted in the concentration of roxadustat found in the positive sample,” the ITIA said in a press release.
“The ABP charge was also upheld, with the tribunal stating that they had no reason to doubt the unanimous ‘strong opinion’ reached by each of the three independent Athlete Passport Management Unit (APMU) experts that ‘likely doping’ was the explanation for the irregularities in Halep’s profile.”

It is important to know that supplements are not legally regulated in the same way as pharmaceutical drugs. So, because of this reason, there are times when you are taking a supplement that you might not be aware of other ingredients, or faulty labeling.... A case in point : I bought Alpha Lipoic Acide for problems with neuropathy. I later learned that only Alpha Lipoic Acide with an "R" on the label, is actually the natural and efficient cell improving ingredient.
All of the others, the "S" Alpha Lipoic Acide or the ones that do not mention the "R" are synthetic products, which are in fact, detrimental to neuropathy healing.
I'm on Simona's side, wishing that this all goes well for her soon.
It is rather telling that the ITF has not completed this process with the tribunal. I think that the ITF also needs someone to regulate from outside, especially legal matters but not only.. Case in point; during the terrible earthquakes this year in Syria and Turkey, the ITF was organizing in the middle of this terrible disaster, fun times for international players with absolutely no mention.or awareness of the horrors that were taking place.

@Beach and Nature fan Take advice from people that have had good results with a supplement. Look at the research before you take anything as well, and consult with the science and a doctor who is in the know of supplements. Here in France, a lot of doctors are not aware of things that are not classic medicine. Also, there is the fact that 'specialists' are everywhere, but seldom know much outside of their speciality.
