Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at Frida led track with a PATREON requested "I Wonder." Frida soars with dynamic vocal patterns, her vibrates and runs executed perfectly. ABBA gets really deep and emotional with this and can have a lot to do with personal things in life.

This is what I like about Abba the Album, Frida is allowed to belt out some numbers and show how good a singer she is.
The same with the Super Trouper-Album. It's my favourite album because there are so many songs with Frida as a leadsinger on it.
The same with Super Trouper and The Visitors.
I think that’s why it’s my favourite Abba album too ❤
One big regret I have about Frida is that she didn’t go on to star in Broadway and West End theatre productions. Her voice and stage presence would have made her an ideal lead lady and she’d have smashed it out of the park, you can hear it in this song, also others like Me And I, I Let The Music Speak, Our Last Summer, Put On Your White Sombrero, Money Money Money, she delivers the drama and the atmosphere like nobody else 💛
Yes, this is exactly what I think. Her voice was made for musicals, so why didn't she do it after ABBA?
I agree..!!!!
Dereck, Frida is ABBA's pro vocalist. And pro live stage performer.
Pre ABBA:
- born 15 Nov 1945
- orphaned Norwegian war baby
- offspring of German soldier and Norwegian girl
- mother died (killed??) of kidney failure.
- Frida told as child her dad was German soldier but was killed at end of WW2 soon after his ship left Norway for Germany. It was sunk.
Frida found out in 1977, her father was alive...
- taken to Sweden circa 18 months old so she could avoid any reprisals. - raised by grandmother
- identified in grade school for her vocal talent and keen ear
- 1956 took the stage
- swept the talent hunts
- 1958, pro, age 13,
- At age 13, she was earning her own way
- fronted bands, orchestras
- age 16, fronted Big Band Orchestra
- 1963-1966: Anni-Frid Four / Anni-Frid & Gunnar Trio
- 1964: National Best Vocalist win
- 1967: National Best Vocalist, her big break
- 1967-1972: EMI Sweden, TV Shows, Radio Shows, Touring, modeling, etc...
- 1969 - met Benny
- 1972 ABBA
Her roots: American vocal standards, classical, jazz.
Vocal idol: Ella Fitzgerald
In 1969 she started to move more to pop. Less challenging genre, but more lucrative. Hit the charts.

ABBA: Bright Lights, Dark Shadows
The Real Story of ABBA
by Carl Magnus Palm **
The girls vocal abilities are discussed. Frida gets lots of attention.
Benny, Bjorn and Michael Tretow ABBA's engineer consider Frida a master vocalist.
The Dark Shadow part?
1971. The foursomes troubled year.
In the winter of 70/71 ABBA did a series of cabaret shows. A trial run to see how things went. It was a HUGE flop.
They were doing others people's material. They all hated it. Agnetha got exposed in live environment. Pitch and strain, etc... The papers called her out on her issues. It made the papers because all four were known nationally, so they covered the shows.
Frida left the foursome and went on tour with someone else. The foursome was done. No future ABBA. Frida was gone.
Stig/Polar offered Frida a sweet deal, if she returned to the group.
She agreed to the deal, which included a solo contract (which she signed after her 5 yr EMI contract expired) and album which was to be recorded and released during early ABBA years. Stig named them ABBA.
The album 'Frida Ensam' (Frida Alone) recorded 74/75 and released 1975. It went platinum. Spawned 'Fernando'. The ABBA a year later covered Frida's Swedish "Fernando'
in english. Both #1's.
A win win win for Stig/Polar, Frida and ABBA.
** Carl has become ABBA's historian. He knows more about ABBA than anybody on Earth. Sometimes even more than ABBA. He digs up stuff the ABBA "forgets", etc...
He has 30 years of research.
He has several books. He dies not varnish stuff. He does not pull punches, but he is fair. He gives credit were credit is due.
The ABBA Team:
Anni-Frid Lyngstad
Benny Andersson
Bjorn Ulvaes
Agnetha Faltskog
Stig Andersson - mngr, early lyric writer, invested ABBA's money into a conglomerate of companies all the members owned. Yep, ABBA was a major enterprise, not just a music band.
Michael Tretow - engineer
Gorel Hanser - ABBA's unsung hero. Office manager, VP Ops. Won special Grammy.
The band + special mention - Rutger Gunnarsson, bass player and also often wrote for strings and horns.
This is the best analysis! I love this: Frida is my favourite ever vocalist. She has such an impressive technical ability and the rare combination of velvet warmth in her lower register and a metallic shimmer in the high register. Two very different qualities in one voice that give her a great instrument that works 'within' the songs. Agnetha has much more a plaintive, sad and sometimes slightly thin soprano that has its own magic that often sits 'above' the music. Both are equally great voices - one is technically a great instrument, one is technically a great emotive storyteller. I don't quite know why but all of my favourite ABBA songs tend to be those where you hear Frida's voice as the main voice - even when they sing in unison (e.g. The Piper) it's Frida's voice that often comes through more.
Frida is simply the very best
La voz de Frida es absolutamente única, muy particular, canta cualquier canción, pop , ópera, rock etc....
Frida has such a velvet voice. So warm and beautiful. One of her (many) strong, lead vocals. I love her style, her variation and control, the lyrics, the orchestration and overall dramatic feel to it. Early signs of B and B getting a taste of drama/musical theatre.
I love Frida
Frida's voice is so!!!!😭❤️
Que maravillosa voz tiene Frida…Una artista todo terreno…👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👸🏻
I Wonder is one of my all-time favorite ABBA songs and precisely one of the reasons why I love this song so much is Frida's vocal delivery. As you mentioned it, this is one of the songs that really showcases Frida's vocal abilities and of course the melody is beautiful.
I Wonder(ful!), one of my favorites from ABBA. Frida's voice is so strong and emotional. The live version is also very very good!!
Derek, I love how you appreciate Frida's amazing voice.
Wow , what a very wonderful voice Frida !!!
Frida is so amazing, what a singer, what a woman
Frida's voice is so good on this song. One of my favorite songs with her as lead. Thank you so much for reacting to this!
I fall in love with her everytime I hear this. She is my love.🥰❤️
In my opinion this is Fridas best song performance. I just love this. ❤️💯
This song is the song of Fridas life.Magnificently, emotively sung.If you know her life story...this song makes powerful sense.Awesome, awesome song and sung with so much emotion.
Frida at her best.....such a unique voice. Please Dereck, react to THAT’S ME ....from their Arrival album. ABBA has an official video for that song.
I have been asking for that one! I'ts on my top 5 ABBA songs :)
YESS! Dereck PLEASE react to “That’s Me”! Such an underrated ABBA song off Arrival.
Like an Angel Passing Through my Room
Another strong frida lead vocal song...lovely...💛💙💖🤩😊😁😀
Frida SHINES!
The days when music still existed. It gives you goosebumps.
Oh fckn hell Dereck ! i knew this was coming , but knocked me sideways !! when my boyf left his home in Birmingham to move down to London to live with me, he playedthis and had to pull over and question his decision ? until Frida sang " but who the hell am i if i dont even try !" made me cry !
I bought this album on vinyl the day it came out. This song is majestic and will never age!!
With this song, you can really understand how equal both Agnetha and Anni-Frid were as singers....both very strong and also very vulnerable...and there couldn't be a more perfect blend in vocals as these two ladies have. I truely adore both as part of the foursome that ABBA was and still is.
Music is the most beautiful experience people can enjoy, share and therefor keep alive for years and years to come.
Thanks
I love this song since I was 12. It’s nice to see, if u enjoy! Frida was my first love......
SUCH A BEAUTIFUL TRACK, SUNG WITH A BEAUTIFUL VOICE. MY FAVE VOCAL FROM ANNI-FRID: LIKE AN ANGEL PASSING THROUGH MY ROOM, FROM ALBUM: THE VISITORS 😍😍😍😍
Ah, I liked this one! It surprised me honestly. Frida’s voice is great as always. Beautiful.
Finally Dereck I really love this song. Anni-Frid really knows how to sing it
She hits high notes here but could go MUCH higher. She usually stays Low in her register, but she was actually a mezzo soprano so could go almost as high as agnetha. There’s a few you tube videos of her singing as a teen right before she joined abba and she sings a lot in her higher register. Some of th background harmonies in abba are her doing higher register stuff. But when she sings lead she tends to sing low and belts.
Please send the songs where Frida sing super high
This is in my top five Abba songs and the best vocal, in my opinion.
Shame on Dereck for not giving it his recommendation!
Hi Dereck, have you ever listen to the song TROPICAL LOVELAND ? I always found this song so cool and peaceful. Frida leads it. Just give it a shot. And thank you so much for your reactions, I enjoy them a lot.
There is an official live version that was released as a b side on a single. That will give you even more goosebumps. I think that this and I Let The Music Speak are her best vocal performances. This song is so lovely and special. The album was my family's first Abba record and will always be my favorite album of theirs. I love every song on it.
Yes, and Andante Andante is up there, too.
Abbasolutely
The live version of I WONDER (DEPARTURE) IS ON THE B SIDE OF THE NAME OF THE GAME
Still gives me goosebumps!!💜
Beautiful beautiful song.
Frida at her very best!
I’ve Been Waiting for You and Intermezzo No1 next pleeeease!
The Live version is much better. Frida is singing her heart out!
Sorry Agnetha but Frida ROCKS.... I LOVE YOU BOTH. 💖🤗
know you like frida's singing ALOT please listen to her and jon lord doing THE SUN WILL SHINE AGAIN. . 2004 jon wrote this for her before his passing. its a wonderful song she did later in life-enjoy!!
I played this track over and over and over when i was 14 years of age after i first heard it. I still play it over and over now at age 58❤ Very personal to me also. Frida's voice... can't find a better one👌
WHAT A VOICE!!!
Thus is my absolute favourite Abba album track ..its a thing of beauty ...sublime ...busses I missed ..boys that I kissed ...I know what she means
Most beautiful voice in recorded pop music
Very "musical" song 😍😍 frida at her "top".... 👌👌👌
This is a truly beautiful song, sung with deep emotion by Frida who had indeed experienced leaving her small hometown in search of fame and fortune in the city. The live version is even more stunning!! It's a shame it was dropped from Mamma Mia 2, as it would really have added much gravity and meaning to the storyline of the movie. The clip is included, however, on the movie's DVD and can be found on RUclips. It's a very moving scene.
If anyone ever doubted Frida they must have learned their lesson from your reactions. Much thanks for including ABBA. They are magic. I recently read something Bjorn said about Frida. It was something to the effect that her voice added the metallic sound of ABBA. Pretty damn cool. Agnetha is magic and so is Frida. You need to see them perform the Girl With The Golden Hair "play" in their live act. This deserves your approval. It is so well made and so well sung. So did not put it on your play list but come on. Why wouldn't you listen to it over again? All you did was compliment it!
Frida ❤️ Makes me sad that you didn’t give it a “Dereck Approves” - but aside from that I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Worth waiting for, so thank you. Another beautiful Frida led ballad is Gonna Sing You My Lovesong from the Waterloo Album. Also from Waterloo is their funkiest ever track, My Mama Said
Oh c'mon Dereck ! this song goes through my head whenever i face a new challenge, a new relationship, a new job, a new home !!
You should definitely react to ABBA’s ‘Our Last Summer’
This song is about her. She wanted to follow her dream to be a professional singer and went to Stockholm. Her husband, the fathet of her 2 young children supported her and said 'Go for it' something like that 😊. I love ABBA, but Anni-Frid (Frida) is always my favorite. ❤❤❤
The live version of this song is even more amazing!
This song has always reminded me of my hometown Huntington, WV.
This song was sung live it's a great song to me I love all genres in ABBA from pop to rock to ballet ABBA does perfect in all genres their uniqueness has no limit for sure
A real hidden gem. It's a lovely song with Frida really feeling the lyrics and expressing the emotion of the song. Brilliant. Thanks for another excellent review. You remind me of Donald Trump in your delivery sometimes, e.g. "It's very very beautiful. It's a beautiful song. It's a beautiful song and it's very well written". I wonder if you model your delivery style on him.
I would recommend "The way old friend do" (ABBA in concert svt) and "Arrival" (instrumental). There has been done many covers on them.
🤭
This is part of "The Girl With The Golden Hair" mini musical. She's leaving her hometown in search of fame (Departure). Great vocals.
Stunningly beautiful ♥
Later in their career,Abba's songs because more theatrical and it was a great move. The vocals, music, arrangements were A+. Benny and Bjorn used what's called multitracking, which they had the girls sing the same lyrics over and over. That's why the vocals are so rich. No auto tune.
A wonderful ballad ‘The Way Old Friends Do’ (live) might be a great one to react to 🎵
The music is very nice. The ballad is beautiful!!!
Hey Dereck
there is a live version of this song, recorded in concert in Australia 1977
*this live version was the b-side of the "Take A Chance On Me" single
but disappointed you were not keen on this sublime Abba track
s'ppose cos it's a "ballad"
& you not keen on ballads my friend!
only like tracks with thumping dance beat? fair enough
but aww....what a shame
on the album it's like Frida's big counterpart to Agnetha's showcase "Thank You For The Music"
mind you, you're very praising of Frida's vocals
& perceptive comments on the production & instrumentation
great stuff
This was the second song in ABBA's mini-musical 'The Girl With the Golden Hair' which premiered on their 1977 tour of Europe and Australia. I think, the only song from ABBA - The Album you havent reacted to is 'Thank You For The Music'. which is the first song in the mini-musical. The idea on stage was that Frida and Agnetha were playing two different sides of the same woman...and dressed identically in blonde wigs. I wonder is the big power ballad of the musical.
I Love this song ❤️ I perform this song live, I’m a guy and yes i sing it in this key. It’s a fantastic song to sing, you can feel the emotion of the melody bursting out of you as you perform.
Benny and Björn showing us their pure genius and what was to come a few years later in Chess.
Looking forward to more amazing ABBA reactions 👍
Bet you do it justice. If you love this song you have taste my freind
thank you @@nickmorrell3559 my ABBA reaction videos are comedy based but I’m a HUGE ABBA fan. I’m hoping to post some singing videos soon. The friendliest of greetings from Ireland 👍
@@ItsmeBarry I also adore Abba. I have every thing they ever did .they only come second to Blondie .but I wonder makes me tear up .when you do post your vids I will be the first to check them out ..greetings from Essex
@@ItsmeBarry just subscribed to you ..so get singing ...wish I could sing ..oh well. .
@@nickmorrell3559 thank you for subscribing my ABBA videos are from this time last year (I had a lot of copyright issues but thankfully git them cleared) I will be posting my older “comedy” ABBA reactions for a while but I intend to start doing more serious ABBA reactions soon. The majority of my channel is reactions to two acts, an a Capella band called Pentatonix and an amazing singer called Dimash but I have a few others as well. I’d be very interested in reacting to more 70s acts so maybe Blondie could pop up some time 🤔
I hope to see you in the comment section on one of my vids soon and make sure to continue to watch Dereck’s videos 👍
Seems like this song was part of the mini-musical at the end of this album. I think there were three songs at the end that made the mini-musical.
Love the song and the pretty keyboard bridge in the middle....react to "My Mama Said" next...you'll love the funky/jazzy style here.
To hear it life is awsome too
I’ve Been Waiting For You, and as someone else mentioned, My Love My Life. Also, many of these songs have been performed brilliantly by the Mama Mia movie cast, Amanda Seyfried and Meryl Streep, as well as Cher and Lily James; they are very good. While they aren’t as good as the originals, of course, I think they are worth checking out, if you haven’t already.
It is a song a beautiful one
Great tune
This was performed as mini musical on the 1977 tour. You should react to the live version from Australia.
It was a live recording,it’s so emotional because it’s here story,a masterpiece
Dear Dereck, this song was the second song of a four-song mini-musical called The Girl With The Golden Hair, performed for the first time live in Australia, 1977. As part of the mini-musical, it carried the title Departure. As a commercial release, it was called I Wonder. That's why it says I Wonder (Departure). The first song had the title The Girl With The Golden Hair, known commercially as Thank You For The Music.
Great reaction as always! My Love, My Life next please. 😃
wonderful wonderful ! this is MY song !!
The Deluxe version of the album has the Live version . We got it as the B side of the single the name of the game. The lyrics are based on Frida’s life and part of the mini musical the gold with the golden hair
Gorgeous song! Thanks so much for reviewing.
There is a live version Derek! It sounds just as good 👍
re visiting this review, you were spot on with this song, its one of my favourite abba songs along with Eagle, i agree this song appears and suits a theatre production narrative it remind me of Climb Every Mountain in the sound of music,... for its style and delivery
Absolut magic...
It's a beautiful song by anifrid for sure. Please react to my love, my life, agnetha led but with stunning harmonies from everyone. You won't be disappointed x
Wonderful !!
Hi Dereck
as You see in Wikipedia
ABBA made a little musical that perfomance live in the Europe and Australia Tour 1977
"The girl with the Golden Hair"
is the tittle of the musical
it's a continue story of four songs in this sequence:
1) The Girl with the Golden Hair (it will be "Thank you for the music")
2) I wonder
3) I'm a marionette
4) Get on the carrusel
The three first, with modifications, was included in "ABBA The Album"
a Masterpiece as an album
with fantastic and totaly different nine masterpiece songs
If you like to see ABBA ballads
I suggest to You:
"My love My life"
from "Arrival" album
My love my life
is the best ballad of ABBA
(it's heartbroken song)
I was not giving the Song too much attention back in the day but it sure belongs to my top 5 ABBA Songs along with Eagle Lay All Your Love On Me The Name Of The Game and The Winner Takes It All.
Yay! I was waiting for this review and we got it!! :D
Really recommending Get On the Carousel from Australia 77'. It's like the Nirvana of the ABBA live performances. Vocals and choir utterly shines and gives goosebumps
Told you this was worth waiting for , great story beautifully sung and A+ for Benny’s piano. Spot on reaction as yes ppl who like this are really into the story.
'I Wonder (Departure)' is a beautiful song so delighted you reacted to the studio versions its so much better than the Live version.
Please do That’s Me - you loved the backing harmonies on Move On and there’s plenty to love about That’s Me
One of my favorites songs of all time.
Like many, it was the song that gave thought and courage to leave your home safe place and seek adventure.
I partly loved my village -family,friends etc. But also hated it due to gay haters and abuse.
I did finally leave but have never gone back.
Sending you best wishes .it s one of my faves too .not just abba .of anyone ..I too left my home town ..didn't have any homophobes thankfully .you keep your self well. Homophobes are scum ..you live your life ..all the best
Interesting that you wonder how it would sound 'live' because there is a live version that was on the B-side of 'The Name Of The Game' single. Many fans say the live version is even better. The four songs from 'The Girl With The Golden Hair' mini-musical were all semi-autobiographical. ruclips.net/video/oHpfc3NDh_s/видео.html
One more song that was performed live in their mini musical. It is not available on an album or single but it’s amazing. It is called Get On the Carousel. There are a couple good versions of the live song on RUclips. Personally like DJ Thomas version the best.
DERECK , You must watch 'the Movie' this album was like an OST and also ' the last video clip' it's time now! ❤
This is the second song from the mini musical The Girl With The Golden Hair and is about a girl making a choice to leave home for fame and fortune. There is a live version available on the Deluxe edition of The Album and numerous other places. But if you can you should track down a full recording of the mini musical then you will get to hear all the songs in context along with Get On The Carousel
Yes it is an emotionally delivered song. I guess I would put it up there with Winner Takes It All and Slipping Through My Fingers. Those are emotional topics. But Frida sounds even more emotional in her delivery on I Wonder.
This is her life song
Hey Derek - check out the live version of this - which I think was massively overdubbed in the studio - but it’s worth a listen - Abba recorded this in 1977 - 44 years ago - their music still sounds amazing - they were trailblazers- thanks for getting to know some of their incredible music - sending u kindness from Australia 🇦🇺 👍
Derck, try "our last summer"
Oh yes thank you for this, finally :) Check out Abba you owe me one and Intermezzo No 1 (great instrumental track, Benny's on his best ;))
You cannot imagine how much I was missing your ABBA reactions, are the ones that I watch the more, and even revisit them haha :). I suggest you the songs: That's Me, Our Last Summer, I've Been Waiting For you, Ring Ring (the original 1973 version), and the full album version of Eagle. I can also recommend you to react to the Electric Light Orchestra, both them and ABBA are my favourite 70s groups and they have so much going on that I'm sure you will like them!
ABBA´s catalogue is so deep with so many great songs (many unknown for alot of people), I think only Beatles can match them in that regard. You´re right that this sounds like a musical song, Bjorn and Benny composed the music for two great musicals after ABBA, "Chess" and "Kristina". There are some great songs in those that might be worth reacting to.
