For those asking about how working class people or those with less income ever afford the congestion charge. Anyone who can't afford the congestion charge could never afford to live in Central London and oftentimes wouldn't have a car either. There are literally 1000's of busses, trains, the underground and trams to get around or you can hop on a bike (your own or hired) or get a taxi if you really need to.

I leased an electric Hyundai Kona a few months ago - best thing I've ever done! I don't have a home charger so I rely on using public charge stations but it is honestly fine. I charge once a week now, it takes around an hour and 20 mins for a full charge and I just eat and listen to a podcast whilst I wait for it! Xx

wait wtf how on earth do some people afford the congestion charge
it's the ulez charge. the ultra low emition zone charge. at the moment you only pay if your car below a certain age and dose not meet the emissions as there's certain levels of emotions a car gives out. mines a 2008 Mitsubishi and petrol and I don't have to pay. I only pay the congestion charge witch at the moment is centre London.
so if your going to London you only pay the lez +ulez which is the same thing really just one change., but if you venture into central London you also pay congestion charge. but if you leave your car parked you wont be changed only the days you drive you are charged.
iv'e started seeing someone in hackney who is 3 hour drive from me, so I have to drive into London . we couldn't understand why my car was exempt from the ulez charge which has expanded up the north circular and all the way to some parts of east London. it turns out all the cars in our family that were petrol didn't have to pay the ulez, only congestion. yet the diesel cars in my family did have to pay both.
a tip if your driving for the day is, if your car is exempt from paying the ulez park somewhere like Westfield either Shepards bush or Stratford and tube it into central. its only like £12 to park for a full day in Westfield Shepards bush. quiet reasonable. as for living in central go electric all the way or just rely on public transport that sometimes is cheaper and quicker and better for the planet.
I was thinking of having nachos for dinner but was all “c’mon you’re an adult, pull yourself together” but I’m taking this as a sign and having some pronto babyyy

The thing that confuses me about electric cars is that the elecricity has to come from somewhere as well and isn't that just as bad for the environment? Pls someone enlighten me lol.
That is a fully warranted concern. I was taken aback when someone explained to me how little the switch to electric cars does for the global pollution levels unless energy production is changed first.
But the tax Essie talks about is for contributing to traffic and in anything - local pollution level on the streets of Central London.

Conjestion charge is devil. That made me shock when I first Heard it while I’m a tourist in London. Uber driver was so pissed about it and he was right. Hopefully there’s a way to run out of it.

Where I come from the government stopped charging tolls because of covid.

wow that congestion crazy is crazy. Sad for working class people who can't afford electric cars or not practical based on how far they drive/live and for types of work they do. It's great to do better for the environment but electric cars definitely still have an impact on the environment for sure (I just don't think people want to talk about it as it makes electric vehicles looks less glam).
I agree... You still need to generate the electricity somehow, which is still bad for the environment, also think about what the batteries are made out of etc...

Good news, you are getting an electric car, all new cars have a 300km range and fast charging takes 30 minutes. Lease it gives you an idea before buying of what to expect, good job estee👍💘🇬🇧

That congestion charge is some big government bull sh$t. Electric cars are not much better. If they catch on fire you can’t put them out with water and the batteries are toxic. But I don’t blame you to avoid that stupid charge.
