Nice. Hornby seem to view wagons as an afterthought for their Era 1 models, which is a shame - goods trains were a far higher priority than passenger trains.
Ironically, Lion and Tiger were intended as goods engines! Come on, Rapido - how about a generic Sharp, Stewart or Stephenson passenger 2-2-2, with some slightly more modern (1840) coaches to match? Sam has shown the way to do it!

Lovely work Sam. We've been pondering about where Stephenson got the tender for Rocket. It seems to us that he evidently did not build it from scratch but simply modified something existing because that's how it exactly looks. At the time there were literally thousands of mines, quarries and tonnes of different goods transport in the UK of all sorts and mostly using horse-drawn cart designs undocumented... So, who knows...
@@SamsTrains Very little as it seems Sam. Sans Pereil shows exactly the same tender in a Mechanics Magazine, Museum Register Journal of October 31, 1829.... Links not allowed here sadly...
@@lindaoffenbacht’s still pretty lazy of Hornby to just reuse the tooling and just get rid of a barrel and add an end piece though. And if we have no idea what these wagons were like, it is better to use something with blueprints. That’s just my opinion though of course.
@@modelrailfan37 Depends on personal view of course. When it is highly plausible that the wagons did exist with minimum of modification (no barrel and with closed front) then why not. It is also more than very clear that the frame is made for the wheels fitted. Not sure if they were actually coal carts (I don't think so). Transporting something like roof slates (brittle) seems much more plausible. The overall dimensions and its larger wheels (for a less bumpy ride) make it a perfect match, and such carts looked like that. Anyway, it saves on tooling as H isn't exactly swimming in money atm, and one can simply imagine the existence of those... Not that we are fans of H though. Their overall quality isn't up to much, and Sam's addition providing for more choice is lovely!
Although I won't be buying these, it is because they are not my cup of tea, and I don't have a stevensons rocket or anything like it in my collection. How on earth can fans make stuff better than the company themselves? First, the Thomas fandom makes good episodes, and someone had even made one Thomas episode better. Now, you Sam made better Era 1 Wagons than Hornby, and even made couplings compatible for any locomotive from any era. I gotta say, I'm truly impressed. I'm curious to know what your ratings would've been if you rated these. A 9.7 out of 10, since nothing is perfect? But I would've definitely gotten this a 10 out of 10! I bet if Anthony saw this video, he'd be impressed.
haha that's very true - the Thomas fans have been out-doing the TV companies for quite some time now. Really glad you liked the wagons - I would have rated them well for performance and value, but criticised them for their plastic construction and visible layer lines! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
I've mentioned this before but I would like to see NEMS tension lock and buckeye couplings moulded in transparent plastic since in black they do detract from the accuracy of a model and can be significant in size on smaller models.
These are great Sam, much better than hornbys and cheaper too. Due to your success you'll need to start partnering with a company that can make them for you at higher volumes!
Hey Sam, well, what can I say, the effort you have put in to this project is incredible, the attention to detail and all the possibles regarding the multiple coupling methods deserve a big thumbs up. Your thought process shows what can be achieved, if only Hornby could show the same presence of mind when designing and delivering models. Those make nice mine carts, too. And they’re small enough to not stand out on an HO-scale layout. You could even paint the coal loads a different color for different types of ore (copper, iron, etc…) or haul scale ballast for the train tracks. 😊 Good job, Sam.

Sorry, I missed the sale of the these wagons I would definitely have bought some, please consider a future batch and next time I will try and get in before they sell out!
Well done. Pity I am only 21 hours late watching this as I would like a few sets. One thing though these are from a drawing for the L & M , as the railways expanded the wagons used would at first be the horse drawn tubs and wagons made for specific coal mine companies but with iron and later steel wheels. Possibly from a local builder of farm or road transport designs. A lot of farm wagons are of a specific design to a area of the Uk, some times a county but can be a region within a county. So until the railways became organised there is a multitude of designs of wagons era 1. Your wagons are very like the later wagons from the mid 1950's on, in Germany with there door to door (Von Haus Zu Haus) container system. Where the container could be a tank (Beer or chemicals), a box (bulk products, dust), a sphere (cement) or an open box (coal, minerals,, etc.,)
Great video. Two ideas for your next 3d printing project. 1) an o gauge wagon. 2) o scale walls and bridge sides. To put on the side of your layout and give some protection from derailing stock Plummeting to the ground. I’ve been there, trust me it’s painful
Thank you very much! An O gauge wagon would be great you're right, though I do have buffer stops at the end of the O gauge layout... the only unguarded track end has lots of space at the end of it, so hopefully no danger! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
The old Airfix 12t coal wagons had a coal load but the wagon was light but the couplings were rubbish unless you put weight in the wagon and changed the couplings
Excellent, 3 sets ordered! And I noticed that you had already sold over 50. Very well done! Suggestion: L&MR general merchandise flatbed wagons. Aside from slightly longer wheelbase livestock wagons, most of the L&MR merchandise wagons in the early 1830s seem to have been short wheelbase flatbeds, with an essentially similar chassis to the one you have developed for the coal wagons. These flatbeds appear to have had a deck raised above the wheels. See the various iterations of the Ackermann prints for whole trains of these. It seems to me your chassis would be ideal as the basis for these wagons. These would be far far better for L&M goods stock than Hornby's cheeky and over-priced recycling of their carriage model chassis with which they purport to represent these short little flatbed wagons, which they do not resemble in the slightest. For accessories, you might consider loads, e.g. barrels (say 1 load) or, most commonly, various shapes concealed by tarpaulins (the other two loads).
Thanks James - order received with many thanks! Flat beds are the plan next - and I've been trying to think of a suitable load for them... barrels sounds like a very good call, leave it with me! Thanks again, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains Brilliant, thanks! That is really excellent news. Plenty of versions of the Ackermann 'Travelling on the Liverpool & Manchester Railway' prints showing a variety of loads, some more crazily stacked than others! Was going to scratch-build the goods wagons, as there is really nothing suitable in the Hornby range, but with such an accurate and free-rolling chassis, I would much prefer to see you do these.
Superb works ! You got them for the same price as a Dapol generic planker wagon, which is remarkable for an home-made 3D printing production. About the price of the Hornby ones, they makes looks the Rapido plankers at GBP30 each a reasonable priced item... In my opinion, there is a wide avenue ahead for 3D printed era 1 rolling stock. Small, simple, original, and beautiful. I'm really considering doing some continental models of mine for this era in HO, I have many ideas from the region where I live, Saint-Étienne à la Loire of 1828, Saint-Étienne à Lyon of 1840, Alès-La Grande Combe of 1840, or many more... I have to pick one !
The funniest thing about the Hornby “coal wagons” is that they are now selling them individually for £20 on their website. Whereas from Locomotion models you can but a single, exclusive edition, Accuascale S&DR Chaldron wagon for the same price! A vastly superior model for the same price, and thats factoring in Locomotion Models’ insane prices. Heck, even a normal 3 pack of chaldrons is only £45. For just over £10 more you can get a great rake of 6 realistic accurascale wagons vs nearly £80 for three Hornby rocket tenders. Crazy.
Well done. You might think of getting them produced by a third party with greater production capacity. After all, they don't just have one enthusiast printing all of Hornby's coaches in his bedroom ! Alternatively, you might think of selling copies of the computer files so that people can pay for your design and print their own.
Hi Sam. Yes, please. Another batch would be great. If you could make them all the accurate "double hopper" version, that would be even better. I can't quote my sources but, as I remember, these were introduced by the L&M as an early attempt at containerised transport and didn't last too long. As a novel and potentially money- saving development these are well- documented and you are to be thanked for producing a great model based on original sources (unlike the replica 2nd Class coaches produced by the NRM (?) and modelled by Hornby which should have bench seats). I also really can't quote my sources about the Hornby style coal wagons and there aren't any original drawings but somewhere I have a reputable written source which says Rocket's (well- documented) tender was adapted from a spoil/ ballast waggon already on use on the L&M (Hauled presumably by Rocket and Twin Sisters during construction work.) The fact that Twin Sisters, Rocket AND Sans Pareil are all shown in contemporary drawings with identical tenders would tend to back this up. It's a shame that nobody ever bothered to draw Lancashire Witch's tender or any views of the ballast waggons. When I triumphantly find the sources, I'll post them up here... Also, I must go on You Tube more often. Once every couple of months clearly isn't often enough. thanks for the Good Stuff
My husband will look forward to another set of yours got a couple already great products look forward to our little rustons testing them on our track thanks
That's Hornby nil, youtubers 2 this week, because another RUclipsr repaired a loco that Hornby couldn't. Plus they ended up breaking the front bogie in the process.

Awesome job Sam, very impressive. With your NEM coupler pockets can you do me a favour and plug in the tt120 couplers (well, the tillig couplers...)? Just rewatching with them cruising around your layout and genuinely a joyous sight. Amazing job
Hi Sam, I watch most of your reviews and really rely on your comments, which I believe are pretty well unbiased. I have just watched the video of your Era 1 coal wagons and was more than impressed. Of course, when I went to Etsy, they were sold out. I would really like to purchase two sets of your wagon which I would be putting behind my Rapido 'Lion'. How would I be able to get hold of these? 17:03
sold out what a shame, was overseas for the last month only got back to Australia yesterday to catch up on your channel. would love to know when you produce more or make the 3d files available.
When corporation falls short able hobbyist picks up the slack just to prove that not everything corpos do is necessarily better than home made. i wonder could Sam's trains try and make some sort of liquid vagon? i think he made alot of open top, passanger carriage and even brake van sure but era I liquid could be an interesting thing i have not see much on this channel or you know Bowman carrying flat one i think varwell or what is it called, because we shalt all serve our beefy overlord. Daaaamn 4 and 8 designs of just the coal is really nice touch! i love that Sam dose this stuff. instead of getting mad he takes the frustration and dose better than the corporate nonsence. May these sell out and bring fans and onlookers joy.
haha thank you so much - it feels much better to do this than to get mad! As for liquid, I've done a fair few tankers and they were a lot of fun! Lots more wagons on the way soon :D Thanks for watching, Sam :)

Awesome, thanks so much for your support! Yes, or you can just fit the NEM coupling from the chaldron packs into one of these, and that'll work fine! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Thinning about rolling resistance on them hornby 'wagons' I suppose in real life they'd be built rough and ready so free running would be non existent but it definitely helps in model form! I do like your wagons here they look lovely
Hi Sam. Congratulations, you have outshone Hornby. I am tempted to purchase a rake but first, I have a couple of questions for you which are: 1) I have 2 x L & Y 0-4-0ST pugs, Hornby R150, and Dapol D10-LN so, would a rake of your wagons look out of place attached to them? 2) I would be tempted to weather them by painting them with acrylic matt black so would that be in line with the original colour scheme of the prototypes? Many thanks, Paul.
Thanks very much Paul! I can say that with the NEM tension lock fitted, these should be able to couple up to your pugs and your B12, though the wagons may be out of place hauled by those as they're much earlier and from the L&MR, though I'm not sure where else they ran! Yes you could absolutely repaint these - the bodies are screwed on and can be easily removed. I'd recommend applying some primer first to make the paint adhere well. The screws are self tapping (I know, sorry) so do be careful re-tightening them... they just need to be finger tight! Thanks for watching, Sam :)
It would have been really nice if you remade all of the Era I freight rolling stock. Those appaling platform wagons and cattle vans that is. And now that you have the resin 3D printer, you can design an actual chain coupling for Era I rolling stock.
Hi Sam I have just bought the tiger and would love to have some of these wagons please let us know when or if you are going to make any more as I would love to have three sets
Hope that you are going to make more Sam. According to RUclips I received this video just 15 hours after its release but the wagons had already sold out!! Most disappointing ☹☹
I also do 3D printing, but my only problem is the lack of design capability. I have to admit that I have not printed anything since moving house. The wagons are superb and I congratulate you on the design and the printing. I will send you an email. Martin. (Thailand)
brilliant work Sam, but I am still puzzled as to where Hornby get their prices from! are they being self destructive? it does make me wonder, especially as you have come up with this idea on what is no doubt a lower budget than Hornby have at their disposal
These are really great looking Congrats Sam. Any chance you can make N scale? I’m building a mining themed N scale suitcase layout. Thanks and great video.
Hi Sam Great job I love that you made them compatible with other loco's & rolling stock. I think since NEM has been around for a while now all model railway brands should make there products compatible for NEM. I'm definitely getting one or two :) Also love these 3D printed projects that you complete very inspiring, makes me actually want to finish the projects I start ;). keep up the good work Sam looking forward to the next video.
Thank you very much! I think most of them do usually, it's just the small size of the era 1 wagons that makes it difficult... but I think this solution is the best of both worlds. Really appreciate your kind words and support, Thanks for watching, Sam :)
- A bit harsh on Hornby: It is possible that the real rocket tender was converted form an early coal wagon. I like your wagons: please make some more for sale. Best Regards, NP
Just a thought, but your coupling bars seem much better than the Hornby chain thingies. Could separate packs of the coupling bars be made available for those of us with fiddly Horny stock? I appreciate that this may not be financially viable.
Sooo tempted to pick some up, but they don’t really go with what I model. They are really cool though, and they are much better than the rubbishy god awful Hornby ones. You should try doing the same thing with the Flatbeds and (depending on how Hornby’s turn out) the Sheep and Horse wagons.
Very impressive! I wouldn't mind paying Hornby prices for your products because all the profits go to you!!! You've done more for Era 1 than any other manufacturer combined
Rocket only lasted a very short time in its 1829 condition, and was soon rebuilt (much lower cylinders, inter alia), losing its gaudy yellow livery. An authentic 1830s - 1840s layout would need some passenger 2-2-2s, and some Planet-type 2-2-0s, with maybe a Stephenson long boiler 0-6-0 for freight - a challenge for Rapido, if their Lion takes off!
Slightly related but been thinking about this and struggled to answers, maybe you know, but what sort of brake van would of been used with this and the era1 choldrons
These wagons are now all sold out. If you'd like some, please express your interest by responding to this comment and I'll consider a future batch!

Thanks again,
Sam :)
Looks like you have given hornby a bloody nose mate ,well done and best of luck with this venture
haha thank you very much! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Ohh, that will be very interesting!
I also really can't quote my sources about the Hornby style coal wagons and there aren't any original drawings but somewhere I have a reputable written source which says Rocket's (well- documented) tender was adapted from a spoil/ ballast waggon already on use on the L&M (Hauled presumably by Rocket and Twin Sisters during construction work.)
The fact that Twin Sisters, Rocket AND Sans Pareil are all shown in contemporary drawings with identical tenders would tend to back this up.
Thank you so much - that's lovely to hear!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Hi Sam would love a set of coal wagons and a lot of couplings as I have lost some . Thanks for the reviews.
That's Hornby nil, youtubers 2 this week, because another RUclipsr repaired a loco that Hornby couldn't. Plus they ended up breaking the front bogie in the process.
Era 1 is the best, this is exactly what we need Sam 😄 you are a legend.
Your 3D printing projects have really come on from your very first design. Well done, although not something for me, I do enjoy seeing your creations, and look forward to seeing more of them, I also liked watching you and Chole play on Train sim...
Ever thought about putting a metal rod in the smoke stack of the Rocket to put weight on the front wheels?
That's a cool idea! I'm not sure whether Rocket's chimney is hollow on the new model, but that could be a good solution!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Somebody willing to put themselves out there to show how it should be done.
Kudos, fully justifying your critique of the Hornby offering.
haha thank you very much - I felt Hornby's were so bad that even I could do better, haha!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
sold out what a shame, was overseas for the last month only got back to Australia yesterday to catch up on your channel. would love to know when you produce more or make the 3d files available.
Extremely impressed.
I am wondering what you'll be doing in five years . . .
Rich from US. Great job. Looks like you really nailed it. Hope you sell all.
Thanks so much Rich, appreciate your kind words!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
How about 0 scale. Please do not forget about your o scale friends. Great wagons keep up the good work.
Lots more wagons on the way soon :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
@@SamsTrains ow my apologies i only remember Fredrichsen's balancing one... bad memory.
thank YOU much more for making this sort of thing - creative criticism backed by proof in plastic. its lovely.
Good work Sam. Did you watch James May's little documentary on Hornby? Interesting Perspective on Simon Kohler
I’ve been looking forward to these, just placed my order. I suppose in need some magnetic NEM couplings to join them to my chaldrons!
Awesome, thanks so much for your support! Yes, or you can just fit the NEM coupling from the chaldron packs into one of these, and that'll work fine!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Great video. Nice to see someone outdo the manufacturers. What locomotive is at 8:09. It looks really cool
haha thank you! That's the DJM beattie well tank - a horrible model, but great looking in that livery!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Not only just the livery but the shape is very nice as well. I love the look without the big firebox.
Thank you sam excellent wagons arrived today
Very glad to hear it - hope you enjoy them! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Well done Sam!👍👍🤩
Thinning about rolling resistance on them hornby 'wagons' I suppose in real life they'd be built rough and ready so free running would be non existent but it definitely helps in model form! I do like your wagons here they look lovely
Hi Sam.
Congratulations, you have outshone Hornby.
I am tempted to purchase a rake but first, I have a couple of questions for you which are:
1) I have 2 x L & Y 0-4-0ST pugs, Hornby R150, and Dapol D10-LN so, would a rake of your wagons look out of place attached to them?
2) I would be tempted to weather them by painting them with acrylic matt black so would that be in line with the original colour scheme of the prototypes?
Many thanks,
Paul.
@@SamsTrains
Many thanks Sam for the useful information; very much appreciated as I have just ordered a rake of 3.
Paul. 👍❤
My order came today they look great cheers
Very glad to hear that - really glad you like them! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Have you tried printing them in resin rather than PLA, wouldn't have the layer lines then
Can we see a video of hornby reviewing these now? That would be quite funny. :)
Well done, Sam!
SMASHING Work mate!! Maybe make a new car for tiger, a van wagon.
Martin. (Thailand)

King of the Railway reference where Stephen tried pulling four loaded 7 plank wagons in the present times
brilliant work Sam, but I am still puzzled as to where Hornby get their prices from! are they being self destructive? it does make me wonder, especially as you have come up with this idea on what is no doubt a lower budget than Hornby have at their disposal
could you use an actual chain as a coupler bar?
😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱😱£77 for three wagons ,well done Sam on your superior alternative 👍👍.
do they come with sprung buffers
haha no buffers at all unfortunately... just bits of wood sticking out at the corners for these ;D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Yes I would like 2 packs as I have the lion and tiger
Thanks Steve
These are really great looking Congrats Sam. Any chance you can make N scale?
I’m building a mining themed N scale suitcase layout.
Thanks and great video.
Order placed if they are half as good as your other prints and I have them all I will be happy thank Sam
Hi Sam
Great job I love that you made them compatible with other loco's & rolling stock. I think since NEM has been around for a while now all model railway brands should make there products compatible for NEM.
I'm definitely getting one or two :)
Also love these 3D printed projects that you complete very inspiring, makes me actually want to finish the projects I start ;).
keep up the good work Sam looking forward to the next video.
Thank you very much! I think most of them do usually, it's just the small size of the era 1 wagons that makes it difficult... but I think this solution is the best of both worlds. Really appreciate your kind words and support,
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
- A bit harsh on Hornby: It is possible that the real rocket tender was converted form an early coal wagon. I like your wagons: please make some more for sale. Best Regards, NP
These look so cool! Can’t wait for more of your videos and the next Salvage or Scrap!
Thank you so much - more SOS coming soon :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Just a thought, but your coupling bars seem much better than the Hornby chain thingies. Could separate packs of the coupling bars be made available for those of us with fiddly Horny stock? I appreciate that this may not be financially viable.
Thanks for doing these, just ordered 2 packs!
Thank you so much Chris, really appreciate the support and I hope you like the wagons,
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Very well done good sir!
It’s amazing how fair prices and cross compatible couplings on your era 1 coal trucks puts Hornby’s to shame
Smooth - if only you offered a weathered version - only joking they look GREAT.
haha thank you! Maybe in the future! :D
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Sam's Trains - Taking the big companies to task.
Great job!
Can you put the wagon flies on thingavese as well?
Unfortunately these won't be shared, as I'm hoping to produce more in the future!
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Look amazing sam! And the wagons aren’t bad either 😂
hahahahaha!
Very impressive! I wouldn't mind paying Hornby prices for your products because all the profits go to you!!! You've done more for Era 1 than any other manufacturer combined
Just a thought but you could do a Stephenson's Rocket with a bit more power to it.
Any chance of producing more era 1 rolling stock?
These look amazing Sam! I think they’ll look amazing With the Chauldron wagons
Sam! Have you seen the Avanti progress class 390 train pack?
I don't think I have - is it any good??
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
Looking good keep up the good work sam
Slightly related but been thinking about this and struggled to answers, maybe you know, but what sort of brake van would of been used with this and the era1 choldrons
That's a good question - I'm not sure - I'd be tempted to say maybe no brakevan at all initially, but that's just a guess
Thanks for watching, Sam :)
