I commented this elsewhere but it needs to be said here. Lifeguards have a difficult job that requires focus and alertness. High temperatures hinder that and make rescues harder, guards also can't just go for a swim whenever they want. The pools they have at this facility are large. Red Cross limits the amount of patrons one guard can watch to 25. If you had 100 people in one pool, which isn't much for this heat, you need 4-5 lifeguards. Couple that with the frequent rotations needed to stay cool you would look at a minimum of 20 lifeguards PER POOL. This doesn't even bring into account the other staff required to keep a facility this large operating. The chance of something going wrong increases exponentially with the more people involved. I know it sucks that pools are closing for the heat but the people keeping you safe and the facilities maintained need to stay cool too. The pool I work at doesn't even have A/C let alone an enclosed room. Our office is more like an open snack bar. Lifeguarding is a hard job and in order to keep you safe we need to be safe ourselves. I want this to be over just as much as you all do so lets all stay cool and hydrated!
Great point, makes sense. I’d imagine in my non-expert opinion, accidents are even more likely to happen in extreme heat like this- people more likely to be dehydrated and potentially pass out 😕🤷♀️
@@bodybalancer that is absolutely right. People don’t notice they are overheating or the sheer temperature shock from entering the water. Going from 115 -> 80 is a huge difference.
Par for the course for California. We need water, they tear down dams and refuse to build more desalination plants. We need power, they are shutting down oil, gas and nuclear power. They won't even maintain the electrical grid properly and fire are started by faulty wiring.
Lifeguards need to stay cool often to make sure they can respond to emergencies and effectively monitor. If we get too hot it can cause us to lose focus and become tired. An establishment that large would need many lifeguards at the same time to cover the area required. Not to mention Red Cross limits the amount of patrons per guard to 25 so if there were 100 people in a pool that means you need 4-5 lifeguards at a time. Couple that with 15-20 minute rotations and you would need a staff of 20 lifeguards per pool. Looking at their facility they have 1 large 10 lane pool, 1 small 3 lane pool, and large multipurpose pool. That starts to get ridiculous after a while.
Close the pool bc its too hot. Is that moronic or what?! Who's the City manager? Plan for this, hire the need personnel to make this work. That's why there's a community pool to begin with! Taxpayers paying for this aren't allowed to use this bc whatever project management didn't plan correctly. Ugh, incompetent City employees! You need 20 lifeguards on rotation, execute it correctly. Its not an every day issue. Forecast these issues and plan accordingly!
Its not that they didn't hire enough, its just there are not enough guards. The reason being is the people that train them are in short supply leading to a massive lifeguard shortage. From what I am seeing I'm not sure if this is ran by the city it might just be a business. You would need a staff of 40-50 guards, all working from open to close for the entirety of this heatwave. Even if they could have hired more guards and they weren't in a nationwide shortage there was no way to know this was coming when they were hiring. Most guards are Highschool to College and if those are in session right now there is no-one to work during the week. Its a crappy situation for all involved but a necessary one. It sucks but what can be done...

I'm happy they reported this. When you need the resource they close it. SMH. These efforts need to be preloaded by the mayors AND stakeholders.

did you watch the video? they explained why
@@norwegianblue2017 hmmmm, you’d almost think they were trying to get rid of us? The border is being flooded by a heat tolerant type.
How many country clubs have closed their pools.
Brentwood is full of aspiring rappers these days..
Wth! When people need it!
Too hot for the pool?? People are big babies these days.
I grew up where it was normal for 110+ summer weather. Nobody needed a break every 15 minutes lol..
