When Zappa was asked if his naughty lyrics would corrupt young people, he answered that he had written a song about dental floss, will that make young people’s teeth better?
There's an interview where the guy asks him the same question regarding lyrics. The interviewer has a wooden leg and Zappa asks if that makes him a table!
It's cool to see someone who totally gets it the first time they hear it - digging the funky prog rock and tightness of Frank's brilliant band and laughing at his absurdist lyrics. I've watched a few India Reacts videos. I love how open and receptive she is to whatever the artist delivers.
Frank Zappa is buried treasure. The musicianship his bands possessed is second to none. I didn't know this till recently, but almost the whole band of the Missing Persons played with him.
Frank's music will cause your brain to go sideways. Lady, you have opened up a whole world of surreal experience with Frank Zappa! hold on tight and enjoy the ride!!
I've been into Zappa since about the time this song came out. His lyrics can make you laugh, think, see things in a new light, make you uncomfortable. But when it's time to play guitar, not many come close. Frank can take you on a musical voyage with plenty of unexpected twists and turns that most guitarists would never think of, let alone be able to play. Try checking out Po-Jama People off One Size Fit's All. Amazing solo on that one after talking about people with their cozy little footies.
Nicely said! Yes he takes not only the audience, but many musicians. I have bought jazz albums and in the jacket they give their foundations to when they played with Zappa and Mothers of Invention. I did get to see him play once. It was magical. He smoked a lot, he woudl smoke and direct his band with a conductor's baton. Then he would put it aside, take a drag of his cigarette, put the butt in the tuning string part of his guitar to hold it, then wail on that axe like nobodys business. And Terry Bozzio on percussion would put a different viking hat on depending on which gong he was about to strike, then hang the hat back on its special rack. I still remember clear as day.. that was early 80s. RIP...
Oh my gosh India! I can't stop laughing from your reaction and the looks of surprise on your face! Absolutely priceless! I was fortunate enough to see Frank in concert 4 times and it's quite a musical adventure. Don't get hung up trying to make sense of his lyrics. Just enjoy the intricate complexities, musicianship and humor he injects into his music! It's amazing the way they re-create all of those crazy sounds and voices in a live show. Frank was a very intelligent individual and an incredible guitar player too.
One of the best guitar players ever. Very few in his class. And most in his class were country players. Johnny Winter was close. And he was best in tandem with his brother, Edgar. Zappa was truly in a class of his own.

I 💖💖💖your reaction to this. Frank blew everybodys mind all of the time. Every Zappa song you listen to will have you saying "I never heard of that before." "Zomby Woff" is my personal favorite because it's jazzy, rocky and down right gritty. Good video kiddo.
Been a fan for a LONG time, 40+years. I enjoyed seeing your reaction, looked like you were digging it. Frank was a true artist, killer guitar player, composer. Definitely one of a kind. 👊😎
The studio version of Montana is wonderful and technically amazing! Would love to see you review that version. Muffin Man from Bongo Fury album also is great!
Thanks, India! They had a sweet show, live, altho' I wasn't at this one. Tight, really tight! The arpeggia played note perfect in the concert hall. Montana equals Nabokov's Onhava, "I should like to have seen Montana". The whole dental floss shtick is about direct sales of value-added items from the farm. Here, bees-waxed hemp fiber. Brush twice, floss once, the first digestion is in the mouth.
I love Zappa. He always had great bands. I saw him in concert countless times. Not many other rock bands cover his stuff but a lot of orchestral musicians and jazz bands play his stuff. The jazz orchestra at the University Of Hawaii at Hilo play 2 shows a year dedicated to Frank.
Back in the day the best video effects that they had was a toggle switch and they wore that f****r out. I would smoke a number and listen to this song or Dina mo hum.
Frank Zappa was a God! I'm so happy to see his music live on through what is several generations and expand into new audiences! Keep digging India- It gets a whole lot weirder and a whole lot better!
Here's the story about Tina Turner singing on the original recording of this: Frank recorded it at Bolic Studios, which Ike Turner owned. He wanted some R&B-styled backing vocals on it, and since Ike + Tina weren't on tour, Tina and the Ikettes were available. So FZ asked Ike if he'd let them sing on one of his tunes. Ike said "Sure - but how much are you going to pay them?" Frank said, "Same as my band - union rates." (which were, at the time, about $100.00 a hour). And Ike said, "No. Pay them $25.00 a track." Because Ike was one sleazy SOB, and he WAY underpaid Tina and the Ikettes, and he didn't want them to know how much they were really worth, and how much he really should have paid them. So Frank paid them $25.00 because he didn't want to make waves. And I hope he felt guilty about that. Incidentally, Tina sang the "I'm pluckin' the ol' dental floss....." part that Nappy Brock sings about 3/4 of the way through, although he makes it sound more like jazz than she did.
I wouldn't give Frank too much stick for not paying the Ikettes any more than union rates. He was recently removed from his entire band almost going up in smoke in Switzerland and someone almost killing him. He also didn't have any LA studios he could book quickly for his band (since he literally had to keep an 8 piece unit on the road to keep himself financially solvent.) This was something he bitched about constantly in interviews at the time. Also his manager (and Linda Rondstadt's) Herb Cohen was robbing him blind. He was a man possessed to get his music out against severe barriers. Using Bolic Studio, through knowing Ike's close druggie friend Johnny Guitar Watson, was probably his only option. Think about it. Why would Frank use Ike Turner when he wouldn't tolerate druggies? Apostrophe and Overnight Sensation had to be hits. After his lawsuits with Cohen, and Tina's subsequent leaving Ike... had he asked her to sing backup for him, it would probably have been at any rate she wanted. He was always receptive to artists like Sting, Jack Bruce and John Lennon playing with him and giving them proper credit on his albums.
And later Ike came in to hear what was being recorded and exclaimed "what is this shit?"... and he wouldn't let Frank use Tina or Ikettes name in the credits...
I've seen Frank Zappa 7 times he is one of the best musician around he has been around scince 1964. He has some of the greatest music put out. You should listen to his album that are all instrumental like Hot Rats,Grand Wa Zoo. Listen to Apostrophe if you can listen to his first album freak out .
The musical interlude in the middle, illustrates just how good that band was. Underneath all those bizarre lyrics, there was superb musicianship. Yes, Frank was definitely in his own lane.

Zappa's music ranges across many different styles and can be extremely simple to incredibly complex. Even to the point of being almost impossible for all but the most talented musicians to play. Many times he will have very silly, funny lyrics sung over these songs as well. Sometimes these lyrics were just complete nonsense but some sill songs were also filled with biting commentary on society.
I loved Zappa saw him in concert 78 listen to the album Apostrophe. You could react to any song on the album. Your Bobby Brown reaction was Priceless. 💕
When I was about 15 , ~1969, I went to his concert at the Chicago Auditorium Theater. Tickets were $6 way back in the upper mezzanine/balcony level, with chicken wire in front. No kidding. So Frank and his band come out and start tuning guitars , doing sound and mike checks. Frank looks up at us kids way up in that cage and shouts directly to us that there are open seats way down in front and that he will absolutely not begin the show unless we come down to the front stage. That is what I remember best,.. He was that kind of person. His music was for his fans and not some corporate suits. He was truly a genius and probably one of the better human beings of the time. He also encouraged a lot of talented musicians to join him along the way who went on to be successful. RIP Frank.
Frank was an intellectual genius and musical genius who essentially wrote and performed to say “fuck you” to the music industry and all bullshit media.
That sounds right. Astute enough to assess the situation accurately, kind enough to address it reasonably and strong enough to not let his emotions control him.
I just love her facial expressions. I remember when this album came out, we listened to it in the breakdown of the restaurant where I worked. This album was my first contact with Zappa and why I remain a fan to this day.
A young lady in 1974 turned me on to Frank Zappa. It took a while to get used to his music, but eventually I began to appreciate it the more I listened. I was formally sold when I saw him in concert in '74 and again in '76. Strange , weird and funny, musically he was far more advanced that I'd witnessed in rock music. There was sheet music at times and occasionally he would just stand conduct his "orchestra", minus the coat and tails. The musicians were masters at playing and yet they'd be these weird arraignments that would take off as rock, then jazz, then a little funk with a splash of classical. It was most impressive.
Love your reactions by Frank. Most people, who i introduce him,are just:ok what else you have. Keep up that open minded life. And dont forget floss. Yours Jukka.
Zappa is creative genius all the way, being so talent he could write anything that tickled his fancy. He snubbed his nose and prevention and small mindedness. Now I’ve not heard this particular version of this song...what a treat and your reaction is priceless.
Great song!! I always thought it was a satirical take on the American Dream --- moving to Montana to become a "Dental Floss Tycoon." LOVE this one!!!! I LOVE the backing vocals....so unique and really brings out the song well. Sounds almost like a commercial jingle like from the 50s. You should really listen to "Valley Girl" with his daughter doing lead vocals. It was his one big mainstream hit
Frank Zappa is one of my all-time favorites. He is a great composer and one of the best guitarists ever. Tina Turner is only on the recording, not the live performance.
One of the few American musical geniuses. Was so lucky to have seen him and his awesome band twice, miss him. The white zone is for loading and unloading only. If you gotta load go to the white zone...you'll love it.
I saw him life twice at least and even worked on his last concerts. So I can die with a smile on my face, without feelin' like the good Lord gypped me.
Frank Zappa was a warped genius composer. His music employed a wide variety of styles, including doo wop, blues, jazz, rock, pop, show tunes, classical, and avant-garde, among others. His band were all virtuosos, and his live performances often varied in comparison to the studio versions, and to each other, making it an adventure to explore his vast catalog of live albums and videos. His son Dweezil has carried on the tradition performing the music of his father, sometimes with guest musicians that had played with Frank in the past. Those performances are excellent as well. While some of his lyrics are silly or vulgar, there is no denying that his compositions are worthy of respect.
Zappa was a completely unique creative genius. Sarcastic, ironic, absurdist, surreal. His music showed that music has no limits. If you discover him for the first time there's a lot to listen to and a lot to absorb. I've known friends who didn't like him for years and then suddenly the penny dropped.
Not all of Franks music was comedy.Very serious music and musicianship were always forefront.Frank wrote all the music for each instrument in the band.Hot Rats is a good album to some non vocal music from Frank. Also The Grand Wazoo.Franks music is a cornucopia of different styles and sounds.
I went to a Zappa concert on April 1st 1982 at the Greek theater in Berkeley, he was an hour late and the rumor was "this was his April fools joke on the audience" but he came out and was one of the best concerts of my life.
GREAT! =) Like that scroll/poster in the background. It's progressive rock--so ya hit the nail on the head. I'm 64 and have a degree in music. Saw Zappa live. Thanks for reviewing this. =)
Zappa and friends were a kick in the rubber parts! I remembered the time I first heard one of his albums at one of my teen--buddies' house. I thought he was nuts. I still listen to his music now & then. 3:)
This is so fuckin cool this chick deserves serious credit. She's being so patient deep diving Zappa. I feel like this is the attitude we need in US society right now. Good on ya! Keep it up! ❤️
Sometimes a song is just a song. Lyrics are just because. They dont always have deep spiritual meaning. most of the time the dont . Sometimes they just fill in the gaps so that he can jam on the guitar
Fantastic song and artist. I never got the chance to see Zappa, but I have seen a few of the artists that worked in his bands and met his sons. Great choice!
Ok. I have to admit this song took me over 20x listening, to love it! I usually listen to the first 1/3 and last 3/3. It’s truly phenomenal. Moving to Montana for a dental floss bush! That’s an entrepreneur!
When Zappa was asked if his naughty lyrics would corrupt young people, he answered that he had written a song about dental floss, will that make young people’s teeth better?
It wasn't the lyrics that corrupted me. It was the stank. And that band.

It's difficult to comment further. As Zappa himself once remarked 'Writing about music is like dancing about architecture...'

I've been known to have quite a Zappatite at times...
I saw him life twice at least and even worked on his last concerts. So I can die with a smile on my face, without feelin' like the good Lord gypped me.
Please react to "Inca Roads" and "50/50" I love All of Frank Zappa's music, but would love to see your reaction to these two gems!
zappa will grow on you and keep growing!!! what a candy land of sound with great musicians-vocals!!!!!!!!
Huge Zappa fan. I have like 16 of his albums and that's just scratching the surface of his musical library.
I absolutely love this Zappa!😍😍 i grew up listening to him my whole life. Thank you for such an amazing channel 😘😘😘
Heard this song a million times since I was a little kid. Listening to it while watching her react is giving me fuckin goosebumps
Been following you for a minute. You wound up on Zappa. No wonder I felt smitten by you a minute ago.
There is no categorizing Frank's music
I went to a Zappa concert on April 1st 1982 at the Greek theater in Berkeley, he was an hour late and the rumor was "this was his April fools joke on the audience" but he came out and was one of the best concerts of my life.
GREAT! =) Like that scroll/poster in the background. It's progressive rock--so ya hit the nail on the head. I'm 64 and have a degree in music. Saw Zappa live. Thanks for reviewing this. =)
love to see a reaction the Carolina Hard Core Ecstasy.....
Zappa and friends were a kick in the rubber parts! I remembered the time I first heard one of his albums at one of my teen--buddies' house. I thought he was nuts. I still listen to his music now & then. 3:)
His lyrics are one thing - the exquisite musicianship is a whole 'nother thing.
Frank was a master at his craft and his influence lives on eternally with his music
That was terrific. Genius. Great to see the band in action.
Thank you.
That was fantastic 👍 I love Frank and was singing the song and laughing my ass off. Frank was way ahead of his time. 💋
Grande Zappa me encantan sus arreglos y lírica tengo cassettes y vinilos, gracias india...saludos....
