    As much as I love Black Flag, I always hated how Ubisoft changed his character from the trailers to the actual game. They do this with all the protagonists but Edward was the worst case in my opinion. He was portrayed as ruthless, like the devil himself. He even had some of the physical bulk Connor had which makes them feel more related. In the actual game, hes kind of a bumbling fool.

    Personally i think Altair is the most evil protagonist. At the beginning of the game he killed an innocent old man and then for his arrogance Malik lost his arm and his brother got killed (which he showed little to no remorse). Also Altair occasionally gave death threats to his team mates if they slightly annoyed him.

      I agree. Ezio causes a lot of collateral damage in his trilogy and he sees the end justifies the means. Arno, Connor, Jacob and Evie are a lot more careful with civilians. The most Jacob does is cause a bank problem but Evie and Jacob rectify it immediately.
      Ezio doesn't feel bad about the innocents he kills. In Brotherhood he uses his villagers' deaths to justify his slaughter of the Borgia. He smokes an underground city. He causes ships in Constantinople's port to burn. With civilians in them! Ezio's wrecklessness makes him the most evil Assassin. All the other assassins use their environment to their advantage but they never directly cause the deaths of civilians. The Revolution happened without Arno's doing.

      @@noobbotgaming2173 For Jacob is it a lot more of not thinking through the ramifications (shown more deeply in the shorter than usual for the series timeframe of the game). He’s young, he’s rash and Evie got the forward thinking between them but he does have a line he won’t cross.
      The Revolution was hinted to be Shay’s doing, even though his only known presence is during Unity’s opening Arno sequence which is where the hint is placed.

    In terms of Good and Evil in Assassin’s Creed, obviously we’re taught that the Templars/Order of Ancients are the Evil ones, and the Assassins/Hidden Ones are the Good guys. Rogue is the perfect example of why it’s complicated though. Throughout the games we’ve seen the lore and philosophy of both Templars and Assassins grow more complex with every game. Both want peace but both want it in different ways but each Assassin and Templar also want peace in their own different way. Ezio was more committed to saving the downtrodden and the populace that were actually worse off. Altair was completely devoted to keeping the Brotherhood alive. Connor was all about making sure that Natives weren’t discriminated against. Edward was realistically more about job equality. Bayek was more about stopping individuals from having absolute power. Each Assassin had their own individual opinions and philosophies that evolved and grew throughout the series due to their own individual experiences.
    Haytham, Son of Legendary Assassin Edward Kenway, was essentially raised by a man who never took no for an answer, and spent his 20’s pillaging, robbing and murdering anyone he came across. To Haytham this was power and through that, Peace. Shay wasnt evil in the slightest honestly, he only wanted to stop the Assassins from making the same mistake again, potentially saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Majority of the Templars/Order of the Ancients, believed that peace came from taking the free will away from mankind, which in all honesty, would have achieved the same peace as the Assassins. The only difference being who decides who gets that peace and who doesn’t. None of the Assassins are inherently evil, but the Majority of the Templars aren’t either.
    Thanks for reading my fat ass rant.

    • @SPUDIKIN
      @SPUDIKIN 2 года назад +11

      I like the outline of the individual assassin's and their motivations. It's one of the great things about the series, that each assassin joins the brotherhood, or at least stays in it, based on their own beliefs and experiences, i.e. when ezio was finally done with it all, and seen his own family as more important in his life, and knowing there were others to take up the fight if that was needed. But one thing I'll say is I don't think the assassin's are fighting for peace, although they would def like for it. Their fighting, for one, as you said, the issues they felt close to in their times, but as a whole they fight for freedom... it's the epitome of the age old idea "you can have freedom without peace, or you can have peace without freedom, not both" the Templars are fighting for peace while the assassin's are fighting for freedom. They both want what's best for humanity, but the argument is which of those two are more important.

    The thing about Altair is, for half of AC1 i dont believe Altair actually cares about the Order or their goals. I think he was just born into the Assassins, and he was good at his job. He doesnt care about the tenants, nor tradition. Just killing. I think the book shows that well. On top of that the Assassins goals were much different then than they were AC2 and onwards. But Altairs redemption comes in the second half of AC1. When he finally apologizes to (Malik?) he is a changed man and definitely not an evil person.

    • @flamesofchaos13
      @flamesofchaos13 2 года назад +3

      Well he was really an Assassin that thought and acted like a Templar. His allies were Templars, The Templars in the modern day take his examples and practices as a lesson to value. It's why he's a traitor not just to the Brotherhood (his own people) but also to the Creed (the teachings and lifestyle they should adhere to). Which parallels Altair given he too refused and couldn't care less for the Creed and a good chunk of the Templar targets he assassinated he understood their views and even sometimes agreed with them. But where the Master chose to become a False God seeking to enslave others to achieve "peace"...Altair realized why the Creed was a fundamental guideline that valued liberty and choice above all else to ensure true peace.
      One a False Assassin turned Proto-Templar, the Other a Radical Assassin with no conscience turned into a Fundamentalist Humanitarian through the ideals that the older man forgot or discredited or denied.
      So AC1 is about Men betraying the Creed, Rogue is about Men being betrayed by the Brotherhood, I believe Unity is about Men being betrayed by the Creed itself, Origins was about why the Creed exists and is needed.

However, keep in mind that when Shay first approached him, he burst through, call Achilles a murderer, and even tried to attack him had the other assassins not held him back. Have someone do that to you and see how patient you'll be with them. And yes, Achilles did attack and push Shay out the window..... AFTER he caught him stealing from him. Which again, would upset anyone. And throughout it all, Shay has not given a proper explanation of what happened aside from calling Achilles a mass murderer and that the assassins shouldn't have the manuscript for some reason. Yes, Shay was angry, but unless he can teleport, he shouldn't have been THAT angry to not give a clear explanation of what happened and confronted Achilles the way he did, considering it would take weeks if not months to sail back to HQ, more than enough time to calm down and collect his thoughts. Make no mistake, I'm not absolving Achilles of blame, he should have handled that better... but I'm not gonna pretend Shay's not equally to blame for how it went down. There's zero excuses, Achilles was so so messed up for that. Instead of evil I’d use the word ruthless. It describes determination, pragmatism in regards to a goal and a line drawn further into moral dubiousness from an outside view than others. We know the Assassins are more altruistic than the Templars, more guardians than rulers, or at least supposed to be, because we follow the series from their perspectives past and present but outside and less informed characters have a less charitable interpretation such as when Ezio tries to describe the Creed to Sophia.

    The least evil is Connor. No question. Other than that, Bayak or Altair. But really, none are. Maybe Achilles during Rouge, not a playable character though.
    Edit: I wrote the first half of my comment pre video and I'm writing this post video and the only commentary I can make as (I absolutely loved this video, BTW so please don't take this has hate, it isn't)
    I think you did Connor a minor disservice by glossing over him. Not only is he not evil, he is about as pure as any of the main character's can be and I can prove it.
    Aside the obvious Homestead Missions, he is genuinely concerned about the men on both sites on the war. I just finished the mission "Lexington and Concord" and right at the end when you are having the conversation with James Barrett, Connor is desperate to find Pitcarin. Connor talks about the lost lives and Barrett said something to the effect of, you already saved many lives by your action today. Connor gestures at the Redcoats who are dead on the ground and says, "What about them?"
    Connor feels guilt that his enemies died because he couldn't stop the fight by finding Pitcarin beforehand. He feels direct guilt because he couldn't save them.
    He has unwavering hope. Most of the plot of AC3 is Connor coming to terms with him wanting to do what is right and good and suffering for it but still doing it.
    There is an arguement to be made that he is so pure and "not evil" that it is to his detriment.
    Honestly Connor, is what "a man" should be. Unwavering loyalty to his family/people, empathetic, great restraint yet will let that beast out of its cage when it is necessary. I know he has some things that aren't great male qualities such as his reserved and stoic nature, but damn, i would follow him into battle.

As for some of Ezio’s actions in Revelations, yeah, they’re pretty reckless and seem to denote a distinct lack of care for innocent lives, but I see those more as the devs sacrificing some writing consistency for spectacle. Nobody more than Ezio understands the tragedy of being an innocent caught in the crossfire of the Assassin/Templar war. Why would he risk blowing up a city, putting hundreds of innocents in jeopardy, just to get to one Templar? That’s something he may have done when he was young and at his most vengeful, around the time he was hunting Vieri. But in Revelations? It just doesn’t seem to fit, at least in my opinion. Especially since this is the game where Ezio, thanks to Sofia, is at his softest and most caring.

    I Think that actually Ezio has done something opinable, like exploding the barrels in Cappadocia, killing a very lot of civilians, is a character that is sometimes careless of the casualties if he need to achieve a goal, like escape from an underground citadel or using civilians as soldiers most of the times
    Altair has a 40% of evil, he admit it when he killed Madj Addin, but during his Journey he redeem itself and actually thinked genuine and good things that no other did during that period, at the same times his not ipocrite, he really try to change himself all the times and try to learn from the other, he questioned himself between good and evil, evolving morally. I just think he s just a son of his times
    Connor actually for me had not evilness like a Rodrigo Borgia, but a sort of, cause he enters in that social thinking of someone that talk about peace, rights, but kills a lot of people regardless, he's an ipocrite, he also killed a lot of soldiers that has nothing to do with him, a lot of people perished for his actions, he killed His father only cause protects Lee, a person that he hates more than he had to, only because he threatens him when he was child, he did all of his journey for pride, not for searching the person who killed his family, because he didn't do NOTHING against the real villain of the game, Washington. He killed his friend, his father and a lot of people that was doing right, only because they were called Templars.. If Achille is in part evil for what he did in Rouge, Connor has done something similar, he had a traumatic event, he wanted to redeem himself killing other people and he killed all of whom that were linked from a past experience of him, but wasn't the truth, even if his father shows to him the reality of what happened, Connor gives a shit and continue to work for his family's butcher... And then killed the father that wanted to show to him the truth, without share a tear.... Then he realise that he was wrong only after he lost everything..the same as Achilles
    Connor for me he's the tipical ipocrite bad guy, that cover itself with good words and ideals, but like a Robespierre condamned the other to death, even if they were not guilty. Yes he was a good person sometimes, he has value, but in real life also a killer has some values and maybe he's one of the neighbors that seems a good person

    It's really hard to give a genuine answer, since AC always had pretty simple "good vs evil" stories and characters, at the end, even if a protagonist has the potential to be incredibly evil, like Altair, who was a selfish pragmatic even after going through the character development of AC1, or Ezio who was a self-righteous idealist who caused the slaughter of innocents even in his later years, just to achieve his goals, they still would never actually be evil as long as they are the protagonist.
    It is for that reason that I agree with your pick of Edward, he was the only protagonist who, for the majority of his story, did not take part in the moral black and white of AC, and as a result it is a lot easier to consider him evil, the story is written to make it easier to see him as evil, even though other protagonists could potentially be viewed as a lot more evil then him.
    Talking about this brings back regrets about Rogue, the story had such potential to expend on AC4 and it's moral ambiguity, but instead we just got assassins wearing templar costumes and mingling with the brits, and templars who wear hoods and mingle with the French.

    The only two evil out of the main protagonists in my eyes were Altaïr, who murdered an innocent old man, didn't care about his dead or injured brothers and killed people only to get his rank back, and Edward, who killed Duncan Walpole for no reason basically, just to try and rob him, remember he didn't know anything about templars at that point, also he helped Torres to kill other assassins and would gladly continue to do so, he only stopped when they caught him stealing. The third place goes to Arno who beat up people when drunk, and of course, stole an apple, which is an act of utmost evilness.

    If you read the book of Altair during the assassin civil war it is made clear that he orders his people to not kill only with Abbas being the only person to die. Which shows a real character growth for Altair from the start of his story. I am not convinced that Ubisoft wanted to put the time to program the game for this one sections that none of the attacks would be killing blows (The AC wiki for Altair also agrees with the book that he and his side did not kill any assassins expect Abbas as he regained control over the order). The gameplay and cutscenes of AC do not always line up that I personally like to go with novelisation of the Altair civil war over the very short flashback scenes in Revelations but I also understand that other people will disagree.

    I'll go with Edward. As a pirate he would attack random ships, kill most of their men, steal their cargo and leave them at their fate knowing they will likely die. Plus the fact there's an option to execute everyone and sink the ship means that's something that Edward would canonically do.
    As for Ezio you might be exaggerating on how good he was because he might have the highest kill count and collateral damage here (only counting missions of course). He started a riot as a distraction and got almost everyone killed in the process, burned several ships at a port and blew up a building that caused massive collateral damage and probably several deaths.

    I think Bayek is the deadliest the kills and his angers just makes him a menace
