I have an old JD 524 snowblower from around 1989. I replaced the old Tecumseh 5hp with a Tecumseh 7hp from Northern Tool in 2007. What an improvement the 7hp was. Starter has been getting worse the last few years. Makes really bad grinding noises. Not sure if mine is fixable.

Now would be a good time to look at it, I might be a sticky bendix that can easily be fixed by cleaning and lubing. The bigger starters can be pricey to replace.

Around $70 to $85 online. Napa wants $233 for one.
