  • Send modulated Morse code with a Baofeng UV-5R. Practice CW with friends and family on local repeaters or simplex frequencies with this circuit.
    The circuit also works well as a simple tone generator for practicing CW with out being connected to a radio.

    I had never thought about using FM for CW. So this is interesting and cool. Thank you for sharing.

    Hi Evan.. Thanks for doing this video. I was looking for a diagram for the method of keying the Baofeng externally and you helped me a great deal. Also if you change the name of the video from Boafeng to Baofeng you ight come up in the search engine more often. You deserve it. Thanks again W1VLF

    Thanks very much, Evan. Yes, my hand is raised! 😄 I have tuned my $15 sdr dongle to 144.074 MHz and set it to upper sideband. I then cut the Baofeng stock earpiece plug from the rest of the earpiece and plugged it in to the Baofeng. I tuned the Baofeng to 144.075 MHz, then keyed the transmit button and sent my callsign, KF5WLF, at a snail's pace, being that the Baofeng takes a while to key up and key back down. At the 1 watt setting, and monitoring the spectrum on the receiver's computer screen, it didn't really look that bad. My keying was awful, and nobody bothered to answer me. My receiver was hooked up to a homemade horizontal 2m 3-element yagi. But I have sent cw with my Baofeng!
    I just remembered...I also turned off the PL tone. That, and the cut mike cord minimized carrier modulation, so all that came out was carrier (assuming that when something is plugged in to the mike jack, it turns off the Baofeng internal mike.)

    This is brilliant! I wonder if I can apply this circuit to a jack built in my CB radio mic so that I can transmit morse on the side band ?

    I hook my key to a mfj 557 practice box then get a specific dongle to go from the 557’s headphone jack to the baofeng’s transmit jack, it works surprisingly well

      A low pass filter would help since the 555 is generating an asymmetrical square wave.

    Hi Hello Evan !! Awesome !! My Question is Could The MFJ - 464 Keyer - reader be Wired up To Replace Your Unit as My in Favour of a Computer Key Board ???

    • @evanwolfe2525
      @evanwolfe2525  2 года назад

      Peter, Yes you could wire the output of the MFJ 464 into your radio's microphone input. This will allow you to SEND cw over 2m for example. My only concern is for receiving cw back with the MFJ 464. I have a PSK 232 that would translate cw to text fine on HF when my radio was in cw mode, however it wouldn't work on our local 2m FM repeater. Why? You might ask... I believe it is because my PSK 232 is looking for the on and off continous waves to drop in and out instead of a constant audio received from a modulated tone sent via FM, i.e. where the repeater is keyed down constantly. I have no doubt your unit will send well, but you may have issues receiving, i.e. translating CW to text via a modulated tone over 2m FM repeaters. What type of radio will you be using to transmit? Keep It "ReeL", Evan

    I presume that you used the original baofeng headphone ptt connector because you ripped into it to investigate the internal wiring? I guess I could use individual plugs if they fit next to each other in the baofeng so I didn't have to sacrifice the headphone ptt unit?

    • @evanwolfe2525

      Loretta, Yes you are correct, I did use the stock Boafeng PTT headset. Grab the right size headphone jacks and you'd been in business. Best of luck building. EW

    Someone put a simplex repeater on the Willis Tower, that is cw only, and make this mainstream. I could just slide a ziptie up the mike to hit the ptt, and morse out of a lil Heathkit Practice Beeper.

      If I use the method described in this video, and as a holder of a valid amateur radio license, I might start by trying 446.000 MHz. Chances are that at least I wouldn't be bothering anyone. Of course, I would be listening to make sure I wasn't interfering with someone else's conversation. 446.000 MHz in the USA is the FM simplex calling frequency on the amateur 70cm band. A prearranged contact with a fellow amateur radio operator within range of my radio might even start a local trend.
