  • For a girl that first stood up on a borrowed bodyboard ten years ago, Meryem El Gardoum has progressed quickly, to say the least. Currently Morocco’s four-time female surfing champion, Meryem lives, breathes, and sleeps surf. At only 21, Meryem is fearless, and insanely talented, charging double and triple overhead Anchor Point near her home village of Tamraght in Southern Morocco. On our visit, she led us down the dusty roads along the Atlantic, welcoming us into her beautiful world, nestled between cactus and stone.
Meryem comes from a traditional Muslin family, where pursuing professional surfing isn’t entirely common, but that doesn’t mean it is out of the question. Her family and friends have always supported her, and cruising around Taghazout with Meryem, it’s clear that she’s part of a lively, loving community of multi-talented surfer, skater, and artist friends.
‘Step by step, I fell in love with that feeling. Standing and riding a wave, I realized, I can’t imagine my life without surfing. I grew up falling in love with it. Just to be in the ocean is the important thing, that’s all I want.”
When Meryem isn’t surfing, she’s busy running her surf coaching business @merysurfcoach in Imouran, Morocco, where she teaches other young Moroccan women how to surf. She is an ISA certified surf coach offering private or group surf lessons. Thanks to Meryem’s help. More and more local women have been taking to the waves.
In addition, to teaching surfing, Meryem is also part of ISA (Imouran Surf Association) in Tamraght / Imouran located on the beach at Devil’s Rock. This foundation seeks to help the local village children learn to surf, by providing boards and wetsuits.
As a supporter of her community and the Moroccan woman, she is part of a newly established Moroccan Females Surfing Foundation comprised of surfers and bodyboarders, including close friends of Meryem of all professions - doctors, psychologists, yoga teachers, fitness coaches all sharing the common bond of connecting other womens to watersports in their country.
Take a picture of you and your board in an iconic spot in your hometown. Show us where you are from and #KnowTheFeeling

Out of all the other muslim countries. Girls in Morocco got into extreme sports way before than people think.. There was female bmx riders, skaters and surfers mostly in the capital Rabat and Casablanca.. back in early 2000s.

Why the subtitles on all the Moroccan girl's speeches? They are talking (very good and understandable) English too. A bit annoying.

I just want to correct so that Morocco has an "Amazigh" culture, not Arabic. We are in North Africa, not in the Middle East. And as you have noticed, women are liberated, not like the Middle East. We are Amazigh. We appreciate the role of women.

Honestly I wouldn't feel very safe as a blonde girl walking alone at night in the streets of Morocco. Sorry to say that but most Arab men just lose control when they see a blonde white western girl in a bikini (sexually speaking)... They are not used to ! Of course Morocco isn't like Egypt, but that's a fact. Salam !

Great concept. Really like the format. Haven't seen any decent waves yet between Morocco, Sri Lanka, or the China episodes. Just goes to show anyone that you either have to be extremely lucky, chase swell scientifically, or hang around a place for a long time. Just cuz you show up with a big sponsor and a camera crew does not mean ole mother nature is going to cooperate. Getting good surf requires commitment and time, period. Don't think you can go buy a Wave Storm at Costco, watch a few videos, paddle around in crap, and then call yourself a surfer.

Laura's swimwear is really not suitable for Morocco's sexually repressed muslim culture. I know a french girl who got raped by a 15y old boy while her boyfriend was surfing. It may not happen to Laura since she's got a crew around her but those things do happen over there. One of the worst aspect of Morocco is the sand mafia, depleting the beaches of all its precious sand. Good job Billabong on skipping serious environmental issues that are of highest concern to surfers and the planet.
