    I'm not black, but I approached my TV watching like I do music. If it's good, I don't care if it was targeted for white or black audiences, older or younger viewers, I felt like if I limited myself to stuff that was intended for Middle White America, I'd be missing out on some amazing stuff. I remember some of these shows very fondly, and it was wonderful to see so much more diversity. Great TV and a great time like you said to be alive.

    I wouldn't necessarily call ROC a forgotten sitcom. It is obviously the most remembered out of the 10 here and lasted 3 season and 72 episodes. It was critically acclaimed and did break into the mainstream vernacular and briefly bubbled as water cooler talk. Such was ROC's impact and legacy, that you spent a third of the video on this show alone. It did get axed far too soon.

      Charles Dutton was right about the lack of promo. You have Broadway trained actors doing a live show and only time you saw a commercial about it was on another black show on FOX.
      ROC vs Andre was a great storyline and for the season to end on a cliffhanger of who shot Andre all the promo was for Kelsey Grammer guest starring

    I always felt “South Central” eventually “evolved” into “Moesha” . The shows were similar in style and music, and had some of the same actors recycled in different roles. A producer Ralph Farquhar was a co creator for both shows. So I believe this why they share so many similarities. We can consider them in the same “universe”.

      Yup... Blame Disney. They had a contract dispute with Miller/Boyett, causing ABC to cancel both shows. Since their still popularity, despite declining ratings the previous season, CBS picked up the two shows, and paired them with this and Meego. Only problem was TGIF catered to the young audience that made Family Matters and Step By Step popular. Gregory Hines Show was a great show, but their big mistake was putting it against the more popular Boy Meets World.😊

    • @sfactor7
      @sfactor7 Год назад

      Yea, that was 1997. The fourth show on the CBS lineup was called Meego. No idea what it was about since I never watched it. The problem is that CBS was still known as a network for old people, so no one really tuned in. Most people didn't even know that Family Matters moved to CBS since it wasn't promoted, which could have maybe brought in some viewers. Though by that time, Family Matters ratings had dropped significantly due to the over the top plotlines.

    South Central and Roc were the ones that hurt the most. I loved both of those shows because it was different than the average sitcom. One of the few times where realism was as much important as comedy and they managed to balance both properly. So when they got cancelled, there was a little piece of me that started to question pop culture a bit more. Because as much as I also enjoyed Martin and Family Matters.... that's not the full black experience that needed representation. But if you were there around that time, before Tyler Perry, before BET+, before New Age Blaxplotation.... this was what quality TV looked liked for US.

    • @NoahBodze

      You people don't watch these shows, so theyre cancelled. It's that simple, stupid.
