The documentary series grew out of the Karate Masters Portrait Project which began in 2012. The portrait project allowed amazing access to the sensei, but it was only Chris Willson and James Pankiewicz who got to hear their stories. The documentary series is a way for us to share that unique knowledge with the international karate community.

I studied with him back in the 80’s when I was in the USMC. The classes were brutal. I was puking in the alley before we finished the first 45 minutes. I figured “I’m a Marine I’m in shape!” boy was I wrong 😂

As a former marine it does my soul good to see this man continue to share knowledge in Isshinryu. Been to several of his seminars and once received training in riot control from him at Camp Pendleton. The years are rolling buy. This Masters of Okinawain Karate is a gift to the serious student. Master Arcenio Advincula and Master Doug Perry are two of my favorite karate influences from the Corp. The character of these men is well represented in this series. Thank you for posting.

I have met Advincula Sensei on a couple of occasions, he is a karate machine.

I grew up in Louisiana on the border of Mississippi. My mother signed me up for karate lessons when I was about 10 years old, and it was Isshin-ryu. I went to those lessons for about 3-5 years and made my way up to brown belt with one stripe (which is two steps from black belt). One day we went on a trip to a type of gathering where multiple isshin-ryu teachers and students could meet and learn from each other. Sensei Advincula was there and I had the opportunity to meet him. He is really a great guy with a lot of history behind him. I remember how he could make everyone laugh with his humor. At the time I could not appreciate how much karate meant to everyone around me and to myself. I just remember being so relieved when my mother finally stopped making me go. I regret fully not continuing with my training and continuing the teaching and traditions of Isshin-ryu karate. If you have a chance to learn Isshin-ryu karate or any karate that is based on Goju-ryu, I highly recommend you do.
If you can start repetitive practice of the lower body then upper body charts. Get your body moving.
He is ranked in several styles.. but IR is his first style.. Goju, kobudo, and Uechi ryu he studied as well as IR…. IR is a synthesis of Goju, Shorin and Kobudo.. And I also chased other sensei after I had studied IR for many years to learn where the techniques came from and how they had developed into what I had learned.. I knocked on Fumio Demura's door one time and had a conversation about his training with Taira Shinken.. who was the source of Shimabuku's training ( Sensei Advincula's teacher} In Kobudo.. I say it is his first style , not first studied but first in his life regarding " its his base style". His stories about his early days I have heard many times.. He is a true student of Karate "DO". not the sport.. but the traditional,

Sensei AJ Advincula is a Tremendous and Great Martial Artist. He has a great personality and I always call him the "Tiger of Isshinryu" from the bottom of my heart, Much Respect!
I met Advincula Sensei in 95, I had already been studying Isshin Ryu Karate for almost 15 years at that point. My partner and I had a small dojo for about 4 years at that point. the first time I met him he was doing a weapons seminar. I remember watching and saying to my partner, " this man knows more than anyone we have ever met before". I will also tell you this.. I have met many famous martial artists.. done many seminars.. NONE can match his knowledge. Not only is his physical condition an example to his students.. His knowledge base is very extensive and detailed. If you ever have opportunity to visit him or one of his seminars I guarantee you will not be disappointed .

He's my sensei's sensei and I've attended several of his seminars. He truly is an inspiration.
I had the honor of attending three total seminars with Grand Master Advincula from 1997 to 2000, and you learn all sorts of incredible Martial Arts skills from him every hour of every day of every seminar. these were 50 hours long seminars. He's an incredible teacher and an incredible fighter too.
Oh how I remember that laugh. I trained with Advincula Sensei way back in 75-76 before I went to Okinawa. Then he gave me a letter of introduction to give to a man there. I am going to tell my favorite story of my days training with Sensei. It was after workout and there was a party at his house. All of use students were there. There was a new student who came. He came up to Sensei and asked him if he had learned the Dim Mak (death touch) Sensei turned and gave him a little squeeze on the neck while say, "Yes, you do it like this, then he said OOPS! The color left the student's face followed by that laugh and huge smile. It was priceless. I have used that more than once.

He would go back to Okinawa he loved going back.

Those who say that UFC is the above-all-be-all, they must hear this interview. I have been saying it for years. UFC is a sport-brutal, full-contact but still-it's a sport. It's for making money, belts, titles, advertisements. No disrespect to the athletes as they put their all into it and for almost all, it's their livelihood. But people who train in special forces or people like Advincula sensei, karate or any MA isn't a sport. They have not been trained like that. Yes, those people who say that Karate or MA is general is more of a show now, they are right too. Because now the emphasis is on the show-part, belts , trophies , being a media celebrity. But people like this sensei, they trained for combat, probably used their training in combat as well. Let's not disrespect the art please.
You are right.. He teaches kata and bunkai.. NOT SPORT.. it is .. fighting.. at the street level.

@Richard Rodrigues I see him walking around his neighborhood in the mornings when I pick up my patient. I started training with him when I was 10. My father couldn't afford it anymore. My father had a friend who taught Judo trained with him till about my senior year in High school.
My sensi went on to the DEA so I stopped training. Studied other arts, just wish I never stopped. Young and stupid. Love to get back to training but a lot of dojos in my area are way to expensive.
I trained in his school in Oceanside CA in 1988. I was in the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman stationed at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps base.
He was my first instructor in Arnis.
Mentally sharper at 81 than many people i know half his age. The emphasis of ki and kiai in Sanchin no lkata was great.

@@DMF716 According to Master Chase, Uezu is alive and well even after his 3rd stroke at 84 years old. Apparently, Uezu did most of his recovery on his own. Strengthening his facial muscles by eating carrots and moving his limbs with a home made rope pull system

I had the honor of performing sunsu kata for Uezu sensei in August of 2018 one day prior to the okinawan karate tournament that year. He is still alive and his mind is still sharp.
@@xwoodbx That's awesome! I wanted to compete in that tournament so bad but I couldn't muster up the funds. Hopefully they'll have the tournament again real soon
Sensei's concepts and open study of many styles, techniques and principles of other styles.. comparing.. Its kind of like studying history.. " how did we arrive here today" .. I have never met another sensei , and I have met many, that will study and research like he does..

I met John Lee at Embukai one year, very nice man.. good martial artist.
Uncle Jon, I took under him in 80's and 90's then taught in college in the 2000's. Good to see his name mentioned, he is still influential
@@seanlee2510 yeah I also took under him in Centreville Al in the 80s . Started in the youth center then we moved to Brent elementary school. He then moved to Tuscaloosa . I started tkd after that and eventually became a Shotokan instructor. If you remember Tom Short I would like to reach out to him he also helped Jon teach
@@shanedarden5238 Centreville is also a place i taught a large group of kids around 2005ish, that's great to hear. I don't remember Tom off the top but Michael Landers is currently running the only Isshin Ryu dojo in Tuscaloosa right now called Falcon One.

Advincula does not do or participate in any form of sparring ( as we know it). He is not a sport karate participant. He studies and teaches traditioanl Okinawa karate . They had no sparring . Sparring was a western invention to promote sport and for people to make money off the art.
@@davidpeterson8464 He teaches drills.. no free sparing. His teachings and techniques are to dangerous to be used in free sparring. He builds muscle memory. in a short time..

True Martial Artist.... Train to Live... Not to Fight
I read on Journal of Asian Martial Arts a few years back showing the short life spans of karate masters in Japan and Okinawa due to their training. Sensei Advincula breaks that idea.
Rollo Pollo Bear.... i know of such studies evidently the trauma 2 the bones from kumite n the makawara adds up over the years... whereas judo n wresting dont csuse the trama o damage n add 2 lifespan not takeaway makes sense look at boxing o football players n there 50s
@@senseihitmanwayofkempo8305 If that is the case Sensei breaks the mold. He does Mak practice on a regular basis.. and has since I met him in 95. He does not do western sport karate. so he does drills instead of sparring. but trust me.. do a class of drills with sensei Advincula and you come out bruised. BUT again. he breaks the mold.. By the way im still training at 68. Yes I have a few aches and pains.. but real karate is not sport its a life long study.. and therefore you will find you have to modify as time goes by. Nobody is immortal.. and as he said.. All things must change.

I have theory about the barfights going down in frequency: In Isshinryu, every kata begins with a block. As such, karate is a DEFENSIVE art. This naturally promotes an environment of peace. Just my two humble cents.
This is like the image footage in Katty Perry's song. I was a little intriqued. I like the foot stance at 32:38. That is a very strong stance. I learned that with a Bow stick from Fusie Kise. He always trained us to walk the bow, but never touch or cross the line of center which the stick was laying it. Once the Balance be came so natural he taught us how to retrive the bow when an attack makes you sway spin your body. Really hard to explain in words, but not so hard to explain physicallly. Just need a strong inner mid core.

Harold Long had no idea who he was, and rather than meet with him, he referred to him as a boy, and he needed to learn his place. Its just like Steve Armstrong said, when you stick your head above the crowd people can and will take shots at you.

My opinion.. rank only matters to grow your own group, or dojo. other than that its worthless and means nothing. I consider it a compliment when sensei promotes me.. but it does not change anything .. you still got to work hard.
