The Undertaker had seen a huge amount of success during late 1998 and 1999 with his Ministry of Darkness stable. WWE fans were presented with a new Undertaker, and still to this day, fans remember the Ministry of Darkness with fondness. When the Ministry of Darkness and Corporate Ministry storylines were finished, the WWF creative team had to come up with a new angle for The Undertaker to take part in.
The Undertaker would create a new tag team with The Big Show named "The Unholy Alliance". Big Show was a relative newcomer to the WWF who was still finding his feet in the world's biggest wrestling company, and so he was paired with The Undertaker to learn from one of the all-time greats. The Unholy Alliance would go through some difficult times though, from The Undertaker and Big Show's backstage relationship being a little rocky to The Undertaker himself suffering an injury that would take him out of the spotlight. This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios takes a look at the entire Unholy Alliance run.
Topics covered in this video include:
01:51 - The Undertaker and The Big Show form the Unholy Alliance
04:23 - Big Show has some real difficulties with The Undertaker backstage
09:57 - The Undertaker shows another new side of his character during a promo
11:50 - The Unholy Alliance at Summerslam 1999
13:58 - Undertaker gets injured and is forced out of the ring
20:14 - The Undertaker is written off TV to prepare for his "American Badass" character
    - Much More!

In my own head-canon, I'd like to think that logically, Taker was preparing Big Show for his first WWF Title win at Survivor Series 1999. After all, that belt is symbolically bigger than the Tag Team belts, and with the talk of tough love and a killer instinct, coupled with Taker taking time off, it sorta felt like a "passing of the torch" moment from him to Big Show.

definitely the WWF title was on his focus but it would have been very uncharacteristic for Taker to prepare his own student to win the title instead of him. I suppose the storyline would have reached a point where Taker would screw Big Show over for his own benefit which then would have lead to a big feud where he was gonna put him over finally

The Unholy Alliance was very strange mainly because of the way Undertaker and Big Show came together especially as they were rivals just a couple of weeks before the formation, Undertaker cracked a baseball bat over Big Show's head while Big Show chokeslammed him through the ring and to now see them as a team never made any sense but it was good while it was lasted.
Taker's promos were mostly quite entertaining and some were a bit off but it was nice we got to see a different side to him which served us a warm up for the american badass as he was slowly phasing out his Ministry gimmick in favor of a more human based persona.
It would have been interesting to see where this angle would have gone if Taker didn't have to leave, I believe that they would have continued as a team with teases of tension leading up to the Royal Rumble 00 and Undertaker would have eliminated the Big Show from the Rumble as his way of saying "tough love" leading him to snap and cost Taker the match which would have set up for a Wrestlemania battle. Even though they had a short run as a team, I won't deny that they made an impact and were very dominant.
Keep up the good work 👏

I really like the unholy alliance between undertaker and show because of how refreshing it was sure it was not as good as the minstery of darkness but I like how he mix biker and deadman at the time it probably my favorite version of taker with his biker persona. Thank you for covering this weird part of takers career because to me it is a very underrated stable

If it'd been maybe 2 or 3 years earlier they could've made it a bit more ridiculous by giving him magic powers and such.
By the turn of the millennium though, that sort of thing was becoming a bit tired, hence Taker slowly morphing into the biker thing before the full ABA debut.

As for the Tag-Team Championship Match between the the Unholy Alliance and the Acolytes, I don't blame The Undertaker one bit for not wanting to tag The Big Show, and get in the match! The Big Show had that one coming! If he hadn't been so arrogant in his sloppy cover on X-Pac the night before, things might've been different. The Undertaker, at that point, had been working with The Big Show backstage, in order to smarten him up on some things. When he saw the Big Show do such an arrogant cover on X-Pac, he must've been thinking:"After all the time and effort I put into trying to help The Big Show...and now he does this! I'm just wasting my time with him"!

I feel like The Big Show's name and theme song held him back. Mostly the theme song. It seems like such a small thing that shouldn't matter but to me it sounded like a joke song indicating we weren't supposed to be taking him seriously. As a kid me and my mate would sing his theme song when fat teachers we didn't like were walking around. The character and gimmick was fine, if he went by Paul Wight with a decent theme song and didn't put on so much weight he might have had more success. Was never a huge fan but I dunno, I wanted to like him, or at least see him become more than just that big guy who always takes 5 or 6 guys to eliminate him every royal rumble. Wrestling is full of 'what ifs.'

Wrestling bios, I think you missed how this darker version of the undertaker was sold to the public. They even started calling him mark at times. Basically ther were selling this character (rather than giving away who mark Calloway was personally) as the guy who plays the undertaker character beliving that he really was this mythical being, that this man believed he was sent to the wwe to destroy bodies an drag them back to hell, an he as this evil merciless undertaker character was there to unleash hell on earth. When you look at things like how the undertaker was portrying himself then an his promos you then realise they actually make sense an were cleverly done, it just at the time didnt sell as well as it should have. But alot later on that whole evil incarnation of the undertaker became looked at by some in a cult like way. Although the earlier part of it is remembered more fondly as many think adding the higher power and vince angle bit ruined it some.

@4:15 - The Undertaker didn't want to move on from his gimmick. Vince has stated that Mark Calloway got so into his Ministry of Darkness character, that he "thought" he was The Undertaker in real life. It got to the point where he was having difficulty separating fiction from reality. It makes me think of when Heath Ledger thought he was the Joker outside of the cameras. This, coupled with Owen Hart dying and WWE needing to be "safer", they stopped putting anyone up to be "sacrificed". This channel is my favorite wrestling channel, but it frustrates me when things like this are skipped over since they are fairly "common knowledge."

Yeah, what you said is kayfabe. This was when they were trying to make to make everything seem real, so Undertaker was acknowledge by the McMahon character as 'Mark' on TV and then said he'd bought in to the Undertaker character too much and was taking it too far. It's pretty common knowledge that IRL Undertaker didn't really enjoy this Ministry character and was keen to evolve it into one that allowed him to be more versatile.

    • @BBJamesB
      @BBJamesB 4 года назад

@@dreadfuldansdiscs2781 Everything you just said is what was said on Television, thus making it kayfabe. What I'm talking about is a person "becoming the character" behind the scenes. Mark Calloway played the character so much that he believed he was the Undertaker out of the ring. His mental health wasn't the best. Much like Heath Ledger being the Joker and things many other actors go through when they play a role of a dark character. Vince has said this in interviews and so has Mark. This is not what was said on TV. This wasn't kayfabe. This was real life.
