- ZAMBO NORTE'S YOUNGEST TOWN WELCOMES NEW RURAL SETTLERS
Kalawit, Zamboanga del Norte - The youngest town of Zamboanga del Norte where the ratio of population, including newborn babies, to land area is one person per hectare is opening its doors to returning city dwellers under the "Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa" Program of the Duterte Administration.
While other local government units (LGU) are averse to the idea of taking in former residents of their areas saying that they would be an aded burden and possibly carriers of the COVID 19 virus, Kalawit Mayor Salvador Antojado Jr. and his fellow officials are excited to see new settlers coming in.
"Welcome sila dito sa amin. Mas marami kami mas madali namin mapaunlad ang aming bayan," said the mayor who is a retired lieutenant in the Philippine Marines.
Antojado himself is not an original resident of Kalawit but after his retirement as a soldier, he chose to stay in the town, where he was assigned as a Marines officer to run after bandits and armed groups.
Kalawit is one of the two towns of Zamboanga del Norte which Governor Roberto Uy volunteered as Pilot Areas for the "Balik Probinsya, Bagong Pag-asa" program pushed by Senator Christopher Lawrence Go and supported by President Rody Duterte.
The other Zamboanga del Norte town which will host the first returning city dwellers is Sergio Osmeña.
Kalawit will host an agricultural BPBPP settlement where the former city dwellers who are originally from Zamboanga del Norte will be involved in tree farming and the growing of high value crops like Coffee, Cacao, Sweet Water Coconut while at the same time raising small ruminants and free-range backyard chicken.
Sergio Osmeña, on the other hand, will model a BPBPP Village where the returning residents will raise free-range backyard chicken and plant high value vegetable.
Both BPBPP Villages will be linked to the market which will ensure that the residents will earn from the livelihood activities they will be involved in.
The returning settlers will be supported by the line agencies which are members of the BPBPP Council.
They will be provided with housing by the National Housing Authority on a long-term payback scheme while the Dept. of Social Welfare and Development will provide food and livelihood support until the families start earning from their projects.
Other agencies will also come in and support the settlers under the Whole of Nation Approach initiated by President Duterte.
The BPBPP resettlement areas in Zamboanga del Norte and Lanao del Norte are expected to provide the template for the implementation of the BPBPP in other parts of the country.
