11:44 you might want to rethink that analogy, a lot of transphobes absolutely DO think all autistic people are bad and to be eliminated. Have you not seen the right wing think pieces that tried, unsuccessfully, to link mass shootings and incel culture to autistic people? In fact, the idea that "autistic people = mentally ill, mentally incapable and inferior and bad because not normal" is one of the most common and widespread forms of ableism we have to contend with.

@DuncanCantDie thanks for this! Before I start, I don't know if these arguments are necesarily valid but these are some arguments agianst transphobes. They might be wrong or ineffective...(Sorry if it's a lot)
    - If hormone blockers or hormone therapy is as bad as they say should people stop from taking chemotherapy if they are a cancer patient? Chemotherapy generates hair lose, illnesses, fatigue and people have died in some cases because of certain sicknesses. Both chemotherapy and hormone blockers are reversable but only one can have the potiential to kill you.
    - Without mentioning the name Kaitlyn Genner, tell me how Kaitlyn doing. By default most of time, people including transphones will say she/her. So they just disproved the argument that what defines a woman is solely their biolody. Another way is just them asking who someone is not kwowing they are a trans man or trans woman, later on refering to them as he/him or she/her again without any knowledge of that person's chormosomes, genitalia, etc. So a woman/man is only defined by biology?
    - Kids don't and shouldn't transtion at the age of five. To determine if they are going through gender dysphoria, it is sometimes (but not always) linked to anxiery, suicidality, anorexia, and or depression because of the discomfort of having physical characterisitcs or expressing in a way that you don't feel is appropriate. Of course parents or guardians can be radical and force these onto children which I'm not a fan of.
    - "What is a woman?" - Some who feels discomfort, in our defitnion, being a man (this also includes Non-binary I suppose) If it's diffcult to give a defitnion, think of being trans as sexuality. Cis is straight and trans is gay. But it's not that black and white either thus a gender spectrum. I don't think there's anything wrong with asking questions, but when people ask that and refuse to ackwoledge it's existance, that's the sign who is trying to fufil a poltiical agenda and or is unwilling to adapt to different people now having rights as well.
    - If occasionally trans surgeroy, hormone therapy, etc. goes wrong, why should that mean we should ban it? Should we ban all surgeories, not just for those who are trans but just in general, if only a few of them go wrong?
    - I can't imagine a scenireo where people's literal human rights will literally be stripped away from them. What exactly is the end goal? What is the overarching moitvation? What's the gameplan? I don't suspect will get killed (hopefully) but why does it matter how someone identifies as? Even if it is "inacurrate", these people know how physical biology works so what's the big deal here? The only people who need to know this infomaion is in a bioloical setting.
    - I know people who are trans or non-binary so even if people believe it's not based in a bioloigcal truth, it's something some have adapted to and hasn't affected our views of how men and women operate. If anything, we've gotten a better understanding of their overall defintions because of the discovery of trans. Transphobia was only created because of people who don't like it. I know the same thing would apply if rascism was never a thing we wouldn't refer to people as white, black, brown, etc. What else has the left "created" that seems to be made for pushing progressivness if being trans is the only thing people don't like?
We are not censoring what a woman is. We've just realized that a woman (or man) is not a linear term. Fingers crossed that in the next few decades (or even just years) this will be accepted as a reality.

As a person on side with you, I agree with everything you said, but I’d be careful taking this kind of guns-blazing approach with someone you’re trying to convince. When I was fired up with conservative rhetoric, the last person I’d listen to is the one calling me horrible or evil or stupid. Does that sound like a secure confident person who is seeking a genuine discussion, or “a triggered libtard”?
To be clear, I am *NOT* suggesting we should coddle bigotry: as you yourself point out, bigots are usually scared of the outside world, so if we want them to calm tf down and stop voting for awful stuff, we can’t give them any of the reasons they’re looking for to confirm their fears. It really does fall to us to “be better than them”. If they’re worth your effort, all of the shame you’re trying to lump on them here will come naturally to them through the course of respectful dialogue. If they aren’t, then neither your shame nor their own consciences will do the trick. What this kind of brow-beating does do, however, is further radicalize people by driving them away from what appears to be a bunch of delusional hostiles, facts be damned. Your information is excellent, but your presentation could stand to be a little less scathing

Indian pronunciations were fine. Important note: While "hijra" is term of some historicity and relgiousity it is also used as a slur because even independant of Victorian era prudishness the LGBTQIA+ community were and are still treated as deviants and outcastes. As an upper caste brahmin cisgender male, after I was born there was a ritual involving visits from trans women (trans men are under-represented even within this group) and as I grew up my parents were able to show me how poorly they are and have been treated despite being an inalienable part of the "hindu" community.
I'm glad you brought them up, but I would caution against interpreting their acknowledgement, presence in some folklore and myths as any form of normalization of the trans experience because there are major strides still needed to break phobias and prejudices even in India. Respectfully, you're not getting it. Of course you can use words differently from their commonly accepted meaning, but that doesn't mean that you changed their meaning, just that you're using them wrong. The 'correct' meaning of words is, in practice, determined by consensus of the speakers. A word means what people agree it means, because if it didn't, it couldn't be used to communicate this agreed-upon meaning. What's meant by "Words can change meaning over time" is that if enough people use a word wrong, over time this new usage can become equally as correct as, or even replace the original 'correct' meaning. We can even observe this with words like 'gay', which previously meant 'happy' but through continued usage to describe homosexuals gained the meaning of 'homosexual'.

@@carved6749 Slang is not codified by people democratically voting it, it makes its way into “official” vocabulary through everyday usage and exposure. This isn’t France man, we don’t have a dedicated language board, it’s just a matter of time until new words get added into “official” dictionaries. There is a reason Urban Dictionary exists: It has a wide slew of problems and there’s a lot of memes that destroy the experience, but it still fulfills the role of defining new slang and its usage. “Awesome” was slang. Now it’s considered an informal but perfectly valid adjective to use.
“You” was the formal way to address subjects, with thee and thou being informal and usage as a subject and an object respectively. Many modern translations of the Bible still use thee and thou, and the original intention was to make God seem more personable and close to the average, non-noble person. Now, we associate the terms thee and thou with fancy, flowery language, due to the drift in language and gradual phasing out of old vocabulary. English as a language has evolved greatly, with Early Modern English being a bit hard but definitely possible for the average modern speaker to understand, Middle English being recognizable only ever couple words, and Old English seeming downright indecipherable to anyone who hasn’t studied it.
Language is going to change. It always will. That doesn’t mean words don’t still have the original meaning in their original contexts and knowing that definition isn’t important in literary analysis, but refusing to acknowledge linguistic change is, to put it in Modern English, cringe.

As a "transphobe" I found this video to be extremely underwhelming and unconvincing.
0:50 He starts off by equivocating on the word transphobe. He has defined transphobe in other videos as "anyone who is not willing to say that trans women are women". He then defined transphobe here as someone who "is scared of people and ideas that are different, and want to blame trans people for their own pathetic existence". Why is he pretending that these two are the same things? Believing in the first definition does not necessitate belief in the second
1:50 He almost immediately contradicts himself by now saying that defining woman as "adult human female" is a valid definition. So does this mean accepting this definition makes you a transphobe? Because saying "trans women are not women" fits perfectly into that admitted valid definition
He then goes to lay out an example of why sex is not binary, but in the process actually proves that sex is binary
7:27 He says if "Sox9 is active, you'll get a "boy" (I don't know why he using a gendered term when should have just said "male").
7:37 He again conflates sex and gender by referring to this person as a "boy" despite the fact that this is a gender term
8:14 For a third time, he refers to this person as a "boy", instead of properly using the sex term "male". I can't tell if this is a mistake, or if he believes "boy" is a sex term
He then explains the process of how we can have an XX male and an XY female based on the presence of Sox9. But guess what? This only further proves that sex is binary. An XX male and XY female perfectly fits within the idea that every human is either male or female, and it seems that Duncan agrees, so how exactly does he see this as an argument against the sex binary?
9:04 He then concludes that "sex is super complicated". What he really should have said is "for a small minority of people who develop atypically, sex determination can be very complicated and technical to determine. However, each of these people are still determined to be either male or female". But of course, saying that would be "transphobic"
Then he goes on to his brain example
12:07 He claims that the existence of a male body in a female brain proves transgenderism, but this is simply untrue. Just like someone can have male-typical chromosomes despite still being considered a female (as he explained earlier), someone with a male-typical brain would still be considered female. I don't how this is a knock-down argument.
12:20 Then he says "if you agree that male brains and female brains are basically the same, then gender identity is just a social construct". First of all, you can accept and believe that gender is a social construct while still being critical of transgenderism if you believe that gender is still grounded and dependent on sex. Secondly, proving that something is a social construct does not prove that is it simply a matter of subjective personal identity. Take race for example, it is very much a social construct that humans have devised, and where we draw the boundaries is ultimately arbitrary. And while a Japanese brain is "basically the same" as a Nigerian brain, it's a huge logical to leap to say "therefore, you can be a Japanese person in a Nigerian body". And "trans-Nigerians are Nigerians" and anyone who disagrees is a transphobe.

    LONG BUT WORTH READING
    1) every definition refers to the normal state. Otherwise you cant define anything, for example you wouldn't be able to say that humans have 5 fingers because some have 6.
About the fact that men and women have differnt brains, thats a fact, but there cant be a male brain in a female body without any genetical abnormality since body and brain are essentially developed simultaneously and dependent on the same genetical factors.
    2) The inaccuracies and fallacies dont end here, they also exstends to the cultures you so desperately try to convince us were widespread through history and the world.
First of all just because some women/men lived their lives fullfilling roles that are usually associated with the opposite gender it doesn't mean they were trans in any way.
(And don't get me started on Greco-Roman gods, it's simply unfair and absurd to portrait them as proof that trans people existed or "were praised" since anyone who is well educated can tell you that greek gods origin stories and myths are absolutely crazy, just as a reference a goddess was born from the amputated penis that was thrown in the sea. Same for northern Gods, they had the power to disguise themselves in anything, just because they disguised themselves as women, that doesn't mean they were trans 🙄)
Furthermore you can't claim that Thai/indian culture recognises these practices since Thailand and india or basically any country that you mentioned has or has had vastly different cultures and religious practices depending on the region and time period.
So no, thai culture for example doesnt include transgenderism.
(Btw transgenderism as intended by the videos author (modern transgenderism) is definitely NOT what the cultures transgenderism is about if it can even be called that way since i already explained how in most cases it doesnt even have anything to do with what the author inteds)
    3) Stop saying gay/black people invented things they haven't invented or acomplishments they havent achieved
Alan turing hasnt invented the computer (it was the Antikythera machine if we talk about computer in the broad term) ( the first modern computer was invented by
    Charles Babbage)
And Germany would have lost the war even if the allies would have cracked the enigma code.
(I could explain why but ill just state: soviet union)
    4)
Christianity isnt about hating gay people or trans people, its about the word of the gospel which doesn't say explicitly that being gay is bad, but it is listed as adultery which is a sin. [Exodus 20:14 ten commandments].
Same goes for transgender people, God created man and woman [Genesis 1:27].
Christianity isn't even about persecuting people, [Leviticus 19:18] “Love Your Neighbor as Yourself”.
Many people then will say that telling gay/trans people they shouldn't sin is hateful and by the same logic it goes against loving your neighbour. This is also wrong because by saying that being gay is a sin we are actually helping these people redeem themselves in Jesus Christ and Faith.
Hope i shined some light on this very biased video.

Lmaoooo the Babbage machines were all single purpose. Alan Turing invented the multipurpose computer which is the father of modern computers. The Babbage machines used completely different mechanisms and processes and relate to modern computing very little.
I’m a geneticist. I’ll trust my professors, my supervisors and the scientific community on what makes up a scientific definition. Not some idiot who calls things “genetical factors” (which is not a term and genetical isn’t even a word)
Transgenderism has existed and does exist in their cultures. There is no difference at the core between any of these cultures because they’re all just acknowledging a group of people that exists.

i found this video very informative and it certainly debunked everything what the transphobes always say, also another thing to add to the history of trans people part is the Institute of Sexual Research (which researched anything and everything to do with LGBT) which was founded by Magnus Hirschfeld (who was gay himself) in the 1910-20s Germany and was based in Berlin where trans people where treated like any other human being until ofc 1933 (which ofc everyone knows about what happened that year).

Ada Lovelace definitely did a lot of work and laid down the fundamentals of coding using Charles Babbages machines, which laid the foundation for computers but the first “computer” in the modern sense, as in the basic functional layout with “processors” and “ram” was enigma. Obviously Turing built on existing concepts and was a fan of Lovelaces work but I think that there is a point where making something actually function as a general “logic engine” is where you have to draw the line of “this is where computers started”

Computer scientists use "turing-completeness" as a test to see if something is a computer or not. Minecraft redstone is turing complete. The enigma machine is not. (also the enigma doesn't have a processor nor does it have "ram" though it does has memory in the form of the rotors)

Duncan, I hope this isn't too ignorant of a question: You have noted that gender identity is entirely a social construct, and is effectively immutable after a certain age. Would that not suggest that a person's brain could be predisposed to develop in some range on the spectrum of gender identity but highly influenced by external factors? Or is brain development so complex that making such a conclusion is a hopeless task?
The reason I ask is that I find the concept of "abnormality" a little strange. It may be useful as a handy categorization for a specific characteristic, but as I live in deep red Texas, "abnormality" is almost a pejorative term. Yet we wouldn't be here without millions of years of gajillions of "abnormalities". And that includes the non-beneficial ones. So why are some of them vilified? I mean - would I be correct by saying that "having some sort of abnormality" is the norm?
In the context of the trans discussion, I want to be on solid ground in arguing that not only would it be normal to see a number of people whose gender identity is different from their birth sex, we should actually expect it.

    • @DuncanCantDie
      @DuncanCantDie  Год назад

Gender is a social construct that is *informed by* societal norms that are pushed on/expected of members of a certain sex.
That means there will always be people who identify outside of these norms or who identify with the norms not expected of their biological sex. When it comes to whether it should be “expected” or not I think it’s not really a valuable point to consider. It happens, it has happened throughout history, in every culture that has ever existed.

@@DuncanCantDie As a "transphobe" I found this video to be extremely underwhelming and unconvincing.
And "trans-Nigerians are Nigerians" and anyone who disagrees is a transphobe.

the only thing i disagreed with is whether or not gender is purely social. You can use human behaviour biology to argue differences between male and female behaviour in groups. From this perspective, trans is a series of variations in these behaviours characteristics.
What people don't get on the right is that there is the rule of thumb and then there is variation. And any one characteristic that any organism can have can mutate.
Btw sex and gender have to be different because one can vary while the other remains the same

"Let me explain why transphobes are wrong about gametes..." uses the word 'gamete' them moves directly to chromosomes, then on to genes, and closes out having said nothing about gametes, explains nothing about them, and thinks he made some point.
There are two gametes, an egg and a sperm. There is no third. That's why sex is binary. An infertile or undeveloped sperm or egg is not a third sex.
Sex is all about reproduction. Things like hormonal sex and such are termed that way only because of their relationship to reproduction. That's why testosterone is considered a sex hormone and insulin is not. Because insulin plays no role in reproduction and testosterone does.
See, when you keep it simple (gametes, reproduction, etc.) the conclusion is clear, but not the one you wanted. That's why you need all this obfuscation and confusion.

Sexual development involves more than just the gonads, so obviously these unfortunate people are clearly distinguishable as the sex into which they were developing.

    • @DuncanCantDie
      @DuncanCantDie  Год назад +5

@@jasonlongton1876 I’ve never said there’s a third or fourth sex. That would be a strawman argument.
Streak gonads are gonads that contain cells for both female gamete production and male gamete production. Neither functions but it’s impossible to say which one is the “right one”.
Are you too stupid to understand what I’m saying? It might be the only explanation here.
For something to be a binary there can be *no exceptions*. You don’t need a third option. Someone who is between the two would stop something being a binary.
Almost nothing in biology is a binary, biology is far too messy.
Sex is a bimodal system, not a binary system. That means there are 2 sexes but people can fall in the middle, with a combination of both characteristics to varying degrees.
You’re literally trying to argue genetics with a geneticist, insisting I’m wrong because you’re too stupid to understand the science doesn’t make you right.

Let's get this out of the realm of word play. I'll cite some evidence. All mammals have only TWO biological parents, a male and a female. No exceptions, as you demanded.
Parse that however you want, but that is evidence of the claim that sex is binary.
Calling me stupid does nothing to prove your point.
Nobody is doubting that developmental issues sometimes arise. The fact that they do, and that we can diagnose them, describe them, explain how and why they malfunction the way they do, and even sometimes correct them PROVES that they are developmental disorders.
