Just after 2020 when the cruise lines were just starting up again. Carnival cruise line announced because of supply chain issues they could not keep up with the demand for bacon on the cruise ship. They decided bacon in the buffet will now only be served every second day of the cruise. Well it's been 3 years and Carnival is still only serving bacon every second day. Now when asked about it John heald says it's to cut down on food waste. I completley disagree.

There is no such thing as wasted bacon. Full stop.
lol true
Similar to a carpenter telling me there is no such thing as scrap oak.
lol you think like my husband!
I think the waste he is referring to is the huge piles of bacon that people take, then leave on the table and walk away. Nothing irks me more that the piles of food people leave. I get it. It's all you can EAT, not all you can Carry.
We just came back from an Alaskan cruise on Majestic Princess and there was more than enough bacon every day for everyone. Smh
Cruise ships are sailing at full capacity. They take your money but want to scrimp on a staple such as bacon! Next there will only be pizza served on odds days.
Don't give them ideas !
Maybe he means that people were taking bacon onto their plates and not eating it all, then it has to be thrown out. I have seen this happen during cruises on Holland America and it is a sad commentary on some people’s wastefulness. 😢
When they announced the supply chain issue back at the restart I knew than that it was all a lie. Not one other cruise line had this issue. Now, they are using waste as an excuse? No way and I hate to be lied to.
Totally agree with you Don. It's a cut back and not a supply issue.
Nothing wrong with limiting items to reduce food waste as I've seen plates stacked. It can still be a full supply for every second day.
Bacon is plentiful and has reduced in price. Sorry Carnival, try again
wish it was reduced at my store :(
Bacon hasn't reduced where I live.
@@carljohnson6434 ontario here. Am I the only one who shops Food basics?
Bacon is double the price 😢
Walmart always cuts it's supply...lol. oops I MEANT CARNIVAL!!
Last Carnival cruise I took back sometime around 2015 a family took the entire tray of bacon off the buffet at breakfast and took it to their table. It's not supply chain. It's gluttony, greed and fear of being called racist in "policing" the bacon, boiled shrimp, lobster.
That's why I avoid the buffets, too many Billy, Bob's, and Sue's who never wash their hands
Taking an entire tray of bacon to a private table is ridiculous and I can probably, albeit maybe unfairly, imagine who the perpetrators were....
@@RickDuBose-o8q I don't know about the bacon....but I do know the demographic that never wash their filthy hands!🤢🤢🤢 That is why I avoid the buffet......too many Betty, Bob's and Sue's🤢
No Omlette bar anymore either. Carnival kinda sucks now. I have one more cruise with them in September and then likely to never sale with them again.
It is Carnival cutting corners and being cheap!!
It is cheap. That is its USP.
I don’t like the bacon they serve at the buffet, not sure what they do to it but it’s plastic like and doesn’t taste good. So I don’t miss it, unless it’s gotten better since Covid, before Covid I didn’t like it. But for those of you that like it I can see why you’d be upset about not having it.
I totally 100% agree with you Dan. There is no reason. Absolutely no reason that they need to be hoarding the bacon.!!!! I was part of the initial restart up cruisers and was with that group of cruisers it affected and agreed with the shortages and the supply taint issues and I am tired of people saying and these unprecedented times and blah blah blah because you know we’re over that things have changed. We’re back to what the new normal is but normal is let’s get the bacon back on board every day.😂
His name is Don.
If you want to cut waste then stop self service. That won't happen, but it could work (by the way, I'm not really suggesting they do).
lol yeah theres pros and cons with them serving
If they would cook the bacon instead of serving it practically raw, maybe people would eat it
Funny that Carnival Corps other lines, Princess, Holland, have bacon on the buffet daily. At least the ones I went on did
Same thing with the change to the omelet station. The reason was "to speed up the line", but the change that they put in place had no effect on the time it takes to get through the line. Strictly a cost saving measure. I rarely get an omelet, but I stand in the line every day for my eggs over easy.
Not the omelet station? My favorite plus. The bacon.
Come on Don, they’re not talking about throwing it away. They’re talking about people taking 10 pieces and then throwing that away when they don’t eat it.
@philiptornelli3477 Serving bscon every second day doesn’t stop waste. The people will still take 2 times more than they eat & throwaway the rest.
That’s food waste
@electrictroy2010 but now they only have every other day to waste it.
I Have seen people pile up their plates with bacon and then leave half of it. This cannot be used for bacon bits etc. it is wasted food
I agree bacon and eggs is a staple for Breakfast. Princess needs to serve sausage patties instead of links also.
I would add that saving money and reducing waste are actually the same thing. I’m not sure you can use the argument that they aren’t connected. I love cruising, but I really don’t like the buffet very often. Last ship we went on only had buffet in the morning. My family didn’t like that, but I loved it,
Our cafe at work did the same thing with bacon...then everyone complained so now the cafe charges for the bacon individually one dollar each! Crazy..and this is a hospital cafe!!
I agree with you Don. Have a great day!
On our 8 day cruise on the Carnival Vista they only had bacon 3 out of 8 days in the buffet. And they limited you to 3 pieces!
Wow!
ouch
@@Donsfamilyvacations
Lol! That is a more accurate comment. OUCH is right!🤣🤣
Everything is better with bacon, even cruises. Shame on John Heald ;). (I also follow the guy.)
glad you winked there I'm still a big fan
Just like the money saving move from real eggs to egg mix and reducing the ability to request items for omlettes, substituting that for 5 or so preset options.
Bacon is and always has been an expensive food item (even in the 60s my mom only served it on special occasions!) Nevertheless, it is a breakfast staple and most people expect to see it on a buffet. Carnival needs to get their act together and invite bacon back on board!
I agree with you completely Don! I have fussed about this. The sausage is not good and I am a bacon lover!
me too
Cruise ships have industrial food production. For instance of one kitchen needs chopped peppers, they get choppd peppers from the veggie preparation kitched down below (who also distribute chopped peppers to the other kitchens and specialty restaurants).
I am curious how bacon fits in this industrialied production system and if ends up needing to be done near the passengers so you need special grills, oil/grease collection/processing equipment at every place where bacon is to be served. If that were the case, I could understand the cruise ship serving bacon only at a smaller number of designated food outlets on board.
I'm confused.... I've never heard of too much bacon...
lol not from me anyway
Almost like too much Cow Bell!
Sorry John, keep the pork and beans and give me the bacon!!lol
I agree with you, and I have always had the opinion that if the package of bacon is not resealable, then it is one serving.
A cost cutting measure for sure. It's not a deal breaker or anything but call a spade a spade!
yeah theres really no reason not to bring it back but your right won;t change my mind about cruising
I wish we could get patty pork sausage even just occasionally.
Don, when you serve yourself in the buffet, some people serve themselves half a pound of bacon. Many times, I have observed much of this is remaining on the plate when the passenger leaves the table. This type of waste is not reusable, so it really is waste. I am not sure this is a very big problem but it does happen. Perhaps preplateing the bacon, like desserts do, could limit this form of the waste. I agree with you bacon should be available every day, but reducing gross wasted food is commendable too. But on the surface, this just looks like a cheap cutback.
Have you ordered bacon in the MDR? It’s nearly impossible to get 3 or less slices of bacon even when you ask for just 1.
true some people go crazy and leave too much bacon but that can be said about everything the serve :)
@@Donsfamilyvacations
You are right, most people eat all of their bacon. You don't see bacon wasted proportionally more than other items.
@@Donsfamilyvacationsbacon is one of the more expensive foods for breakfast and lost of people seem put a big pile of bacon and then not be able to finish at all
I word in a hotel that had a buffet before and a seek lost of people throw out around half of the bacon took and the other food items on the buffet had minimal waste
Just finished a carnival cruise and to be honest the menu was not up to usual standard we were used to.
I feel the same way about the sauteed mushrooms for omelttes and Guy's Burgers toppings.
I agree with you - taking the bacon away is a cost cutting issue not a waste issue
You can never have too much bacon, just sayin’! 😂
mmmm bacon
"Vast majority of cruisers head for the buffet". NOT. NEVER.
One reason why as a platinum Carnival cruiser, I have now switched to Royal. They had bacon every day.
Bacon bits for salads and baked potatoes, BLT, hamburgers, chicken sandwiches, breakfast burritos, tacos and sandwiches, pizza topping…..off the top of my head for already cooked bacon.
Bacon grease is my favorite essential oil 😁
lol nice
My brother and sister-in-law cruised for the first time last month. It was on a Carnival ship. He didn't like the cuisine. I have never cruised on Carnival cruise lines. I began cruising in 1992. I do want to book a transatlantic liner one day. Cunard is owned by Carnival. ☺️😊
and princess and holland america and lots more lol
Don’t miss a cruise because a line sails under the carnival flag they are very different
I totally agree with you this is a Carnival trying to cut back and save money.
Carnival owns several cruise lines. Princess, HA, P&O, Cunard, etc... Why doesn't Carnival implement the same rules/ regs on their sister brands? I have no issues getting bacon on Princess.
I bake a pound or more of bacon at a time and keep it sealed in the fridge and just take as needed. Totally worth it
Food waste is a problem. We try to only take what we can eat.
Carnival also has someone policing the bacon as well
Yes Carnival please bring bacon every day. Especially want it back at the omelette as well!
Carnival is cutting corners. But in some motels that serve a hot breakfast rotate between bacon and sausage
Agree with you 100%
thank you :)
Pre-pandemic, Lox (salmon) silently disappeared from the Lido buffet. First, it disappeared from the buffet but you could still get it at the sandwich station. That was a little more time consuming to get, but it was still there. Then it disappeared entirely. Bacon is going the same direction. I'll bet eggs are next, since they got so expensive...
We only cruise carnival and never had any issues getting bacon
We cruise alot
How is it they are having issues with bacon? I have been on RCL and Princess this year and they did not have this issue. Sorry Carnival try again not a good answer.
Other cruise lines seemed to have maintained a “Bacon Supply Chain”.
All of Carnival’s cutbacks like bacon, table cloths, entertainment, and etc. decrease the cruise experience provided to guests while increasing Carnival’s corporate bottom line.
Fighting, drunks, the smell of marijuana, drug sniffing dogs, lack of ambiance, and the list goes on. Cruising with Carnival has gone downhill a lot over the years (first cruise with CCL was 2000). Luckily their sister cruise lines, like Princess and HAL, haven’t followed in Carnival’s footsteps toward becoming the Motel 6 of the Seas.
Our last Carnival cruise was 8/26/2018. That cruise gave us 103 days cruising with Carnival. It is likely we will never cruise with Carnival again.
3k Per person per cruise now and no bacon is crazy. Pretty standard food item.
Have to been to Vegas and seen the all you can eat crab legs? People grab like 40 then eat 8. A crew member at $10 an hour versus 1lb of bacon is $10, I’ll go with crew member handing me 2-3 strips and if I finish, I can come back for more.
Cruse prices are up as well to cover their increased expenses.
Our last cruise on Carnival , food was terrible everywhere but the Stake House.. bacon only on Wednesday ....
lol. Bacon 🥓 who would have thought.. good job Don
lol 😆
Carnival has marketed to & attracted a crowd that abuse the buffet…need to address that without impacting the rest of their customers. (Note I’m in the field and there is no shortage of bacon)
Try getting British bacon in most buffets. Some cruise lines may serve it in the MDR, but many do not serve it in the buffet. There are exceptions of course.
There are at least two types of sausage every day on a Carnaval ship. Most times one or both tast terrable. Bacon is cheaper so stop the bull sh t and put it back on a daily basis.
Food waste? We know the left over items from the buffet are brought to the galley for the crew. They're just being cheap and insulting everyone by not giving bacon. Free the bacon embargo! Boycott the sausage, boycott the fruit, boycott the hash browns until they bring back daily bacon! They want food waste, we'll show them food waste! Viva la bacon!
It’s not the bacon left at the buffet that’s wasted. It’s when the customer takes 10 slices, eats 2, and leaves the rest on his plate to be thrown away.
@@ricktaylor5397 You didn't get my joke outrage? I thought it was pretty clear how thick it was laid on. BTW, if you have ten slices of bacon on your plate, you're eating 13 slices because you need to go get more.
tongue in cheek
@@Donsfamilyvacations Seriously though it's a dumb outrage to not have bacon every day and it's a lame excuse why they don't.
Didn't notice lack of bacon our last carnival cruise.
Yeah, they are not fooling anyone with the food waste excuse. It is time to bring back some of the better food we lost during covid. Carnival is doing better and better daily. Time to give some back to your loyal customers.
Maybe he's talking about the food taken and not eaten so it gets thrown out
I think the bacon on the ship is not good anyway, so don't care if they have it same with biscuits and gravy it is nasty and the biscuits are hard as rocks, get rid of it.
There are a lot of food items that aren’t cared for by large numbers of people that may go untouched or very little. Bacon is not one of those items.
Hi Don. Thanks for the updates and I appreciate your opinions
I agree, it does save them money. But like you said. With the prices of cruises the way they are. I think they can afford bacon on the buffet. If they wanted to save money on the bacon they could make there own.
On my last Alaska cruise on Majestic Princess there was bacon, sausage and pretty much anything you could possibly want for breakfast was available in the buffet every morning. However, my favorite breakfast was the bagel and salmon in the MDR. The salmon was absolutely delicious. I’ve been on one Carnival cruise, it was okay, but I really prefer the Princess ships.
There are always excuses why we don't have certain things on the ship.
I totally agree. I read that same response and it was total B.S. He definitely took the Switzerland route on his response!
Everything the cruise lines cut is to increase profit while they charge higher and higher fares. However, it amazes me that some people will defend everything a cruise line does while paying more and more for their vacations. Why do some feel like a consumer has no right to complain? If you never push back, you will lose more and more because it will always be about profit for businesses.
True statement about what we pay for cruises, bacon should be the least of their worries
I haven’t been on carnival yet. Agree it’s a money saving thing.
Yes, all the time
Totally agree with you Don. Give me bacon. 🥓
One of the things that I look forward to on my cruise is bacon everyday in the buffet
That is ridiculous. It's a breakfast staple. And you're on vacation so I want bacon(2-3 slices) daily. Leftover bacon does not go to waste. So many things to do with it
Forget "Where's the BEEF?!" It's now, "Where's the BACON?!" I may be showing my age here 😂
You are so right, Don! Thanks for sharing this video with us❤🛳️🦩⚓️
Maybe Carnival needs to do like Holland and serve buffet foods.
Speaking for myself the bacon buffet debate is not a cruise issue for anyone that I know that cruises on Carnival. You can order bacon with room service and get it in the main dining room. Bacon is more expensive breakfast food item so it is understandable from Carnival's point of view it is a controllable food waste item if it is all you can eat and goes uneaten.
It's definitely about money & nothing else. Can't imagine that bacon is ever going to waste, although it is going to my waist!
I totally agree with you!!!!!!!!!!!
I was told something was expiring that I don’t have.
I eat in the main dining room so this is not an issue for me, too many billy, bob's, and Sue who refuse to wash their filthy hands
I have yet to see bacon go to waste on CCL. As a matter of fact; I've usually had to wait in a long line every time to get some of the pig crisps 🐷🐽
I usually eat blueberries with granola & yogurt for breakfast. For years, I could ask for the blueberries and they'd bring me some. One time I asked in the buffet and the chef came out & told me he didn't have any upstairs. They weren't providing him with any but if I went to the Main Dining Room, they could get it for me. I did just that & was told no, they didn't have any either. I pushed the issue though as it was the 2nd day of a 16 day cruise & the that chef came out to speak to me. He said, we have blueberries but we have to save them for desserts. It's become a standing joke in our family now on cruises, hey they actually have blueberries when we see occasionally see them. This was before Covid too.
Don. I do not cruise for Bacon. I cruise for Sun, warmth, not having to cook or clean and meeting new people.
I could imagine the fights over this! LOL
Dear Don, Obviously you don’t ever go to the dining room for breakfast. (Perhaps you should, so that you can get the all important bacon)
Firstly, it is untrue, of course, that one needs a reservation for breakfast in the dining room. Secondly, it is also untrue that “the vast majority”
have breakfast in the Lido buffet area. The dining room often has lines and seems very popular at breakfast time. Maybe it is the bacon.
Yea done with Carnival, raise the prices crazy and taking things away every month. You will eat bugz and you will like it is real i guess. This will keep evolving
Cruise lines are experts at knowing how much people consume. This is a cost cutting approach, same cruise prices are the same. Huge profits each quarter
