  • This bass worm is a crankbait too! I have been thinking a lot about making hard plastic / soft plastic hybrid lures and this just seemed like a natural progression from my last one. The action is incredible and you can do so much with it using stop/start and twitchy retrieves. I think I'll make a bigger one for offshore trolling for cobia. www.amazon.com...

    Wow very creative! And it all came together so well to make an excellent lure. I'd bet a slightly larger version of this with a bigger soft plastic eel lure would absolutely CRUSH some cobia in the spring time! Here in SC the broad river is the place to be for that, so I may have to make myself something similar this winter and have it ready to go for Cobia season! Cheers Franco! 👍

    Conformation on the frig suggestion... it's the best advice for the resin and CA glues... I worked on my shop and turned the air-conditioning off in my office section (where my glues are). I recently lost close to $150 worth of resin and CA because of not having the air-conditioning on in my shop this year. Heat kills resin and CA.

      Ancient Technology hit me up:) I originally designed and make been making a robust version of these since 2015. They’re called SoftTailed SnakeKings, they are 10”& initially introduced as a wake bait but I have several versions like slow sinking or with a rattle available. I my originals were smaller like these and gradually grew as I wanted to offer them as an economically viable an alternative to my multi-jointed wood snakes I had originally introduced awhile back… Well before Savage gear jumped on the bandwagon from all the interest my snakes were generating on all the popular Swimbait forums. I’ve been selling them through FB, IG, word of mouth and fishing forums. No pressure just putting it out there. Cheers:)

    I have a question about drying my lures with UV lights, I use Aluminite and rotating the lure on the jigs you invented. The lure was taken out after 20 mins and the small stick used to fill the hole at front hook . I had to twist to break and pull the wood causing the paint to chip and had a rim around the wood from the aluminite resin. I have two lures in the rotating box this morning with a small hooked wire . I had to rotate a bit with the lights maybe 3 mins or so. I had to fix both lures with wire flipped against the lure body. Waiting to go our and check in a few minutes. My question for you does this happened to you drying the UV resin? If so what have you found that works to prevent the holed blocked, or damage to the lure from using any material to prevent... Hope this makes sense, on the side waiting.. RLF south Georgia

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  3 года назад

      I try to keep the resin out of the hook eyes but some always gets in. The best way I have found is to carefully crush the resin in the eye with a needle nose plier then chip it out with a utility knife. You might be putting it on too thick. If the lure rotates in the holder...you did not make the holder correctly or mount the lure right. Check out the videos of making the holder for more instructions. Best of luck. Cheers.

    Very cool. A Big bite baits 'kamikaze swimon' would probably be an awesome trailer for that, I'd love to see that in the water. I've got some balsa laying around, I might have to try to make something like this. One of the small wire corkscrew keepers might hold better than that screw style, though I've never tried that style so i could be wrong, just an idea.

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  3 года назад +1

      Yes... I have used a wire coil style to screw it on but I wanted the screw to be part of the lure. This way there is less to assemble.

      Thanks for the sub! Just starting out keep it simple and fun. Get some balsa and start carving...try copying your favorite lures fist. I was just sitting here trying to remember if you put anything down to help separate the mold and you came on and said you realized. lol. Back in the mid 80's I did something similar but mine were a little more buoyant. I would take apart a floating jointed Rapala with some split rings I would add a worm hook to the back. It took a little bit to get used to fishing it but it would give a ton of movement to a big worm.

    What was the thickness on the bill and how long was it. The reason I ask is I'm trying to make a copy of that little They I don't have a lot of tools and I think I got the angle wrongot the angle wrong Cause I had to send it out cause I don't have a pre made bill I just had to use a piece of broken plexiglass So I think the angles between 30 and 45゚And I'm using a 1" square billThat made by handSo my question is how deep do you think it'll grow

    • @EngineeredAngler
      @EngineeredAngler  3 года назад +1

      Mine sink so it will go as deep as I let it. The square bill I used is 3/4 inch at its widest and I trimmed it back to about 5/8 long.

    I recently had a similar idea in which I 3D printed my head-portion of a fishing lure to fit my DIY soft plastic baits. They printed out just as I'd hoped but I found that the side to side motion was not as pronounced as I'd hoped.
    It's a simple matter of just going back into my CAD models and tweaking the size of the lip of my 3D printed bait front ends but, I wanted to ask you:
    Are you just eye-balling the size of the lips on your crankbait front ends or is there a type of formula that helps you figure out the optimum shape and size that the lip should be?
    I just wanted a little bit more side to side movement so I copied the size and shape of the lip on one of my store bought jerk baits. Since this jerk bait was of similar body diameter as my soft plastic baits, I thought by copying the lip it would give my soft plastic baits at least the same amount of movement as the jerk bait had.
    That didn't turn out to be the case. I think I might need either a different sized lip or a different shaped lip. Can you tell me how you arrive at the optimum size and shape of the lips of your hand made baits?

      I had never seen it until someone mentioned it in the comments. This is actually similar in appearance but pretty different in function. Still, I totally get the comparison.
