You rock! I changed the pressure on my husband's CPAC (10 year old machine) a few months ago. The doctor approved the lowering but NO ONE called to change it for 6 weeks. I finally went on line and changed it. The office finally called to set up an appointment to change it. LOL.... the woman was flabbergasted when my husband told her I took care of it. She told him that I couldn't do that (obviously I can). My husband said well I've been waiting too long... again she said she can't do that.... then my husband asked her if she was going to send the sleep police out for me. LOL. Meanwhile his new CPAP came in and the technician set it up to the old pressure. Yesterday they finally changed it remotely. GRRR, it only took them 3 weeks to get it changed this time. Same problem for me. My Dr approved a lower setting and it has been 3 weeks and they called me today to set up an appointment... So today, I changed it thanks to you. Now if I could just get some replacement parts. (It's been 11.5 months since I've received any.)... and that's a long story for another day.

Hey Andrew, thanks for the help with that: my max setting prescription is 16, and been on it for about half a year now and though it has done wonders for me I do believe that setting is a bit high for me as last night I woke up very early with my lungs fully expanded and still trying to breath in... And I felt like I needed to take a breath instead of breath out... after a few seconds of trying to breathe in I exhaled and yanked off the mask... That was a bit scary. It has happened once before but not as painful as this time. I cannot afford to visit the doctor just to change the setting DOWN… which is a bit ridiculous; so I was glad to find your video on here. Thanks again… David

This was a huge help because I just started a job dealing with this stuff. As far as people thinking it is a hassle, you guys have to understand that if we go by you word (not saying that you're lying but there have been many instances where people just go to good will; pick one up and say set it to a certain pressure thinking "oh that sounds right". Then a week or two later they come back stating oh this is not working, this is bs, blah blah blah; I'm suing you because you didn't do your job) so for that reason this is why respiratory therapist require a sleep doctors orders. Yes, it is an inconvenience but it is to assure that you get the best therapy we can proide

For those who want to educate themselves and learn to help themselves instead of running to the Doctor every 10 minutes and being a 'slave' to the medical world plus doling out $$ for every office visit (for me its a 45 min drive) that entails a whole 5 minutes of the Doctor's time, get a slip a paper that tells me to got to a sleep center (another 45 min drive) then have ANOTHER person do the actual adjusting, then this video is a Godsend. This isn't scary, people, its common sense. You don't want to take his advice? well then, move along. we're all adults here and can make our own decisions when it comes to our own health. I was having problems with my cpap machine today. So, I made an appointment to have it checked out today. Seems they changed my min pressure setting to max by mistake I'm sure. So, its Friday night and I get ready to set my machine up that seemed to work okay in the office this afternoon. Put my mask on and "BAM:" 20 mb H20 hits me. my ears pop and gets my attention for sure. I messed with it and fooled with it but couldn't figure out how to reset my pressures as before. I called an after hours number but they said there was nothing they could do until Monday morning and it would have to be by appointment only Well, I told the "emergency Number person" there was no way I could sleep tonight without my machine working correctly. SOOOOO frustrated and disappointed in Mesa Star Repertory..... She could not offer any assistance. I wound why they even have an Emergency Service. SO, I looked on You Tube and here you are. Thank you so much for the video. I have fixed my "Minimum pressure setting that matched the max. (20). Thank you my friend. 5 STARS....

Great info on changing the pressure. Not a big deal to do and certainly not a hack. It is necessary in certain situations. I bought my machine and mask on line. My doc noticed my max setting was getting reached most nights so he wanted it raised, but because I did not buy it from a local store, he wrote me a script to give the on line retailer to give me the complete manual with setting adjustments. They said they did not have it, but referred me to your video which was perfect. Thanks.

I can't thank you enough for doing this video. I gained weight since my original sleep study and needed more air pressure on my CPAP. I would have had to go to the Sleep Doctor and pay a 70 dollar copay, and she would have ordered a new 1000 dollar copay sleep study, all to say "YES, you need to increase the pressure." I don't have that kind of money and am living paycheck to paycheck, so I would have had to just endure poor, obstructed, sleep. God Bless you Andrew.

Thanks. I got wrapped up in all the inanity you mentioned and worse.
SleepCareConsultants told me that the machine autoadjusted. My max pressure was 20 as prescribed by regular doc but I paid a visit to a great ENT who told me that max pressure was too high and the adjustment feedback capabilities of these machines were way overblown.
I told them that it practically blew the mask off my fact after making farting sounds that woke me up far worse than my snoring did. When I told them it did not readjust and failed to respond when I stopped breathing (I hold my breath for 40 seconds and there's no change in pressure) they declared it broken and sent another. I called them to take both back and they wanted to argue. I was so pissed I didn't talk to them for a few weeks then finally called again to tell them to pick the units up and they said "Too late, you now officially own it." I replied that I'd figure out some way to unlock it. I could still tell this story to the insurance company and probably get them to take the first, supposedly broken unit back but with the information you provided I probably don't need to.
On top of that SleepCareConsultants always played phone tag, called me at work when I couldn't talk and didn't have caller ID when they called (I get tons of solicitors calling and had no way to know it was them). Then when it needed adjustments they had to talk with my doctor who never talks to anyone because he's too busy making money. So I was caught in a 3-way nightmare with no one who made any sense at all and they were all going through the motions simply in order to collect $$$ from insurance company as well as me.
I can see how locked down machines might be best for very elderly with somewhat diminished cognitive capacity but I'm hardly there yet. I really resented the lack of control and your remarks in that area really resonated.
You've done far more good for people than all these turf-protecting, money grubbers could ever do. My deepest, sincere thanks.

Thanks. I have a loaner machine while mine is being serviced and I didn't know how to up the pressure to what I am used to. I don't see any legal repercussions to this but I will make one point for people to know the downside of too much pressure. Not having enough pressure when you exhale while sleeping will allow the tongue to partially or completely block the airway. The normal result of this will be snoring sounds as you try to breathe in. It will also slightly or completely wake you up so that you go from a deep sleep state to a shallower state or full waking state. This obviously interferes with you getting enough sleep and can also lead to hypertension over time.
The downside of too much pressure is that the lungs remain partially inflated even when you are breathing out. This takes up a certain volume in your chest cavity. The other thing that is in your chest cavity is the heart which is trying to fill in between beats. When the pressure is very low in the chest cavity, normally when you are breathing in, the heart will have no difficulty filling with blood and this blood is then pumped out as the heart contracts. If the pressure is increased by CPAP, the chest cavity never reaches the low pressures that it likes best while filling. Instead of air being sucked in by the low pressures in your chest, the air is blown in by the higher pressure from your CPAP machine. Even when you breathe out the lungs do not completely deflate and provide a slight positive pressure against the heart which is trying to refill. So, the more positive pressure you have in your chest the harder time your heart has filling with blood. It is a balancing act between not getting a good nights sleep ( which is important) and not getting enough blood flow.
I am not trying to scare anyone here but don't greatly increase the pressure above what the doctor or sleep study technicians told you. I can see a case for adjusting it to take account of different mask designs but don't go wild. CPAP is not a toy and needs respect to get the beneficial effects we are all seeking.

So my ears pop, and I get a headache - and I took the machine to the dr who said it was too bad, the setting was as low as it could be. I had no idea - and still don't really understand why - but lowering the maximum pressure from 10 to 8 is stopping that.

I just want to thank you. I have lost quite a bit of weight and the pressure is too high now. What I am expected to do as a good little sheep is call my doctor, make a new sleep study appointment, go back a few weeks later (it takes him that long to finish his report), then go to the equipment provider and have them press a few buttons to adjust the pressure.I never understood this process and it is a big part of the reason that healthcare costs are so high in this country. We are talking about air not oxygen. It's the same air we breathe everyday. We are quite capable of adjusting the pressure slightly up or down and monitoring the results without a doctors help.My first machine I was able to order the service manual on eBay which allowed me to move my pressure up by 1. I think eBay has killed that though. Before that I felt like I was struggling for air. I did not need a doctor to tell me that.

Can't thank you enough. I have the same issue with needing different pressures for different masks. I also need different pressures when i have a stuffed nose. THANK YOU! I have not slept in a week because doc adjusted pressure too high, and now he is on vacation for a month. Going to adjust it RIGHT NOW! :) And then take a nap!!!

I’m a sleep tech. I’m not going to harass you lol, but just want to give you and your viewers a word of caution. If the setting is too low, it will not be effectively treating your sleep apnea. If the setting is too high, it could make your sleep apnea worse. Just thought you would like to know :-)

Thank you for making this video. I am 100% in agreement with your opinion. This will improve the quality of my sleep as I wake up because of not getting enough airflow. A simple small adjustment is all that is needed. I will reprogram the minimum ramp pressure and get a full nights sleep. Many thanks for this help.

You are awesome! I changed my mother's in 5 seconds, also figured out she was using the humidifier but the setting was set to 0, so she really wasn't making any use of her humidifier. Did not know that although the humidifier was "on", she had a setting of how much humidification to set.... man, you are awesome! The doctor reduced her pression from 10 to 8, and I was able to help her out with your video!!!!

Dude!!! You are the man.. I am sure I might get in trouble with the Doctor, but oh well.. That's what they get for not helping me out.. I have been on CPAP since like 2001 and have been on 13 that whole time.. And I just got my third machine within the last couple of weeks.. So the week before when I was at the doctor she asked me, So I see you have gained some weight since we last did a study on you in 2006, DUH, do you feel as though you are getting enough pressure.. My response, I wouldn't mind another few notches up.. Well I will have the new machine to auto flex so if you need more it will change.. So a week later when I have to drive almost thirty miles to pick up the machine I get to talking to the tech that was helping me and I mentioned my previous pressure.. She said I don't think this is going to work for you very well.. Why?? The minimum setting is at 4 !! WTF!!! Used it for two nights and it showed.. I felt like crap.. Called the doctors office.. Took two days for them to call me back to say that they called over to the supplier and are going to have them change it to 6.. Again WTF!!! I said to myself, I'm not driving thirty miles for two notches when I hardly felt the pressure at 4.. Gave it another week and felt even worse.. Thankfully I still had my old machine, that at this point sounds almost like a weak coffee grinder.. Called the office on Monday and they have not gotten back to me.. This video has made my Xmas Eve.. I shall sleep like a little fat baby..lol

Hey thanks for making this much easier. Because I have MS my settings periodically need to be changed. However, I never considered changing the pressure to accommodate my mask of choice. BTW: my doc told me to go out to RUclips to get instructions about changing the pressure. So much for He Cha's tirade.Bendiciones, Cyn

Thank you so much for this video!! My doctors office doesn’t do the changes and they have a home health company come out. However that’s not covered by my insurance since it’s not for set up so I would’ve had to pay out of pocket. I now don’t feel like I can’t breath bc my machine was too low. Thank you thank you thank you!

These machines are super easy to clean and fix. The internal control electronics have an unusually wide compliance range of 10.6 to 15V so long as you get 3 solid amps. Definitely a good one to run on backup power if the mains go out on you. They do suffer from the foam issue though, and if it is starting to deteriorate should be removed. ❤

I don't know why CPAPs are so regulated anyway-- seems to me huffing air is the least dangerous thing you can do. Appreciate your video, man. Thanks. I have a simplus full face mask and I just upped my pressure from 7 to 9 (many hypopneas at 7 with desats down to 70 and 60). I wonder what kind of full face mask can can handle a minimum pressure of 9. Mine is kind of leaky at 8 anyway.

The Amara View.... is a newer design that eliminates the nasal prongs or nasal "pillows". This mask works pretty well at the lower pressures. It does however leak easily if you are a side sleeper and your pillow pushes it up or off your face a little. Also the hose weight can pull the mask away from your face when the hose hangs off the side of the bed some. I appreciate the review and the teaching efforts you're making.
