  • My take on Buddy’s studio demo for Chuck Berry’s “Brown Eyed Handsome Man”. The non existent treble and bass were adjusted to make it have somewhat of a fuller sound. Double tracked the vocals to give it a ‘stereo’ feel.
I claim no ownership over the music nor pictures presented in the video and also do not profit any revenue from said video.

Garage, punk, rockabilly, call it what you want. He predates all of that.

This was the last song he ever played on that fateful night in the surf ballroom. RIP Buddy…

Thanks for sharing this gem of knowledge. I had always wondered what was his final song. Both La Bamba and The BH Story differ so much. In all the interviews I've seem about that final show no one mentions it.

This is no studio demo. This was recorded in Buddy's Home "Studio" (aka. his parents' garage with the truck moved out). If memory serves me, this was recorded on an older Ampex machine that Buddy was allowed to purchase from the high school he'd attended. This, and many other songs were recorded with the boys who would eventually become the Crickets: Jerry Allison on drums, Joe Mauldin on standup Bass.
Buddy would later-on re-record this song at Nor-Va-Jak Studios in Clovis, NM; but it would remain unreleased until after Buddy's death presumably because they couldn't get clearance from Chess Records & Chuck Berry. By 1963, something must have changed and the re-recorded version was released with some additional overdubs courtesy of the Fireballs.

Thank you for the additional information of the song, I never knew about the Ampex bit but it sounds like it’s probably true. Where did you source that from if you don’t mind me asking?

Great version because I'm familiar with the over dubbed version that was done by the Fireballs after Buddy's death. This that we just heard sounds like the original because the over dubbed version sounds more enhanced. It's great that these rare gems are being released. I hope that Buddy's family, friends, and fans get hear this, especially the ones that are up in age.

Thanks for posting this remarkable recording. I would love to know when Buddy's Chuck Berry cover version morphed into the Waylon Jennings reinterpretation. I read that all the musicians jammed with Buddy on "Brown Eyed Handsome Man" for the last song of each Winter Dance Party performance. I wonder if Buddy's direct cover version evolved on stage or if Waylon created the reinterpretation he released in 1970. And in 1978 Tanya Tucker did a great cover of Waylon's version. Tanya's version of Waylon's version of Buddy's version of Chuck's version. And like so many great moments in Rock and Roll, it all started with Chuck.

The undubbed version was just Buddy and Jerry I, as part as a (16?) song playlist to send to decca HRs. Probably recorded in Buddy's home and then converted at the nearby Venturian studio

    • @That_AMC_Guy

Yes and no. These were recorded, like you say, at Buddy's home garage. Joe Mauldin joined in on standup bass. On occasion, Don Guess would join them however I don't think he plays on any of these songs. They did not intend to send these in to any studio. These were simply run throughs to see how they'd sound. The Demos they sent on to Decca Records were recorded at the Nesman Recording Services in Wichita, Kansas. Those FOUR songs were: Love Me, I guess I was a fool, Don't come back Knockin' and Baby won't you come out tonight.
