Hi, I have been a Numan fan since 1979, used to be a member of the fan club and have seen Gary live many times. The first time was the Berserker tour. Thanks for this, it is great.
@@VaughnGeorge I certainly will! It is a very exciting time to be a Numan fan. There is so much to watch and listen to, on mainstream TV and radio from over the last few days. It feels as though the fans who have stuck with Gary since the start, despite the low points, have been rewarded.
Great video, have been enjoying all the Depeche Mode Stuff - and thanks for mentioning Gary Numan's new albums being good, I'd never hear anything recent he's done but have now checked out Splinter (2013) and Savage (2018) - amazing! Looking forward to more videos on this topic.
@@VaughnGeorge you mentioned on here you would be doing a Gary Numan Album review series. Is this still in the works? I would definitely be down for this.
Gary Numan got me into synthesizers! Early stuff through I Assissan was the best, then redeemed again later with Pure....great songs and a great artist.
I liked the phase in his career very much, especially the white face and the blue hair, the complete Berserker album is very good! Also the cooperation with Bill Sharpe "Change your mind" was still something special at that time! I think you remember Vaughn! I have another suggestion, an older song! Remind me to smile would also be cool for an analysis! Thanks a lot Vaughn for this great video! 😊
Thanks for the shout out and mentioning Electronic Cafe my friend. You are a top man. Thank you. Much appreciated. The Wolfgang Riechmann album “Wunderbar” came out in 1978 and Beserker came out in 1984, so being an iconic electronic album it / he was definitely on Numan’s radar. Thanks again VG. Speak soon. MW 🎧🎹🎤
Combined with that jaunty, motorik percussion, it lurches with a menacing aural disposition, much like his renowned cold steel execution. Despite the simplicity of the melodies used, it's the way they're layered, each almost self designated and resplendent in presence. There are echoes of 'Metal' within that further captures the Numan sound, proving that he has a working formula that transitions effortlessly from album to album. That's the beauty of Gary's vision in not straying too far from what he knows he does best. Great to hear your improv played with feel. Like another comment on here with regards to 'Down in the Park' being played acoustically, it's nice to hear another take on a number, diametrically opposed to its original production. Looking forward to the Numan discography features in the future.
I just discovered this Numan era and wondered why I missed it as a 14-year old new wave fan! Well, I guess these Numa releases were never sold in the US. I would have been obsessed with him! I have seen the live concert video and it's even better than the album version!
Absolutely loved hearing your breakdown of this. I saw Numan many times in the 80s and 90s and adore this song. Your version at the end is so beautiful! 😻
Great analysis Vaughan. I love listening to an explanation by a music expert like you explaining why I love Numan’s music so music. I look forward to further technical analysis’. I agree with you; I think you know more about what is special about his music than you do.
Well made video. Gary Numan is a GOD. I have tickets to a few of his Intruder tour shows here in the LA area later this year. Berserker album and song is as a whole inspired by the Berserker short stories collection series.
As always vaughn a great break down of berserker love your interpretation of it on piano 🎹👏👍. I've seen Gary from 83 to 2019 he is the best showman ever. A song to break down try I die you die know that is a song for you. Keep up the good work vaughn doing a great job.
Absolutely beautiful. Just as much as those marvelous synth toys you have, Vaughn. You and your channel are looking stronger than ever. Love the song choice for this Sunday. :)
Incredible video analysis of an underrated Numan song. I remember I bought the White Noise Live album, in 1985 I believe. Berzerker is the intro song. I really hope you get the chance interviewing Mr. Numan.... I actually don’t know his back catalogue that well, so an album review series will be 👍🏻
Great analysis.. I love the way you improvised the song at the end.. reminded me of his own piano pieces he often did.. brought a lump to my throat hearing that melody stripped down to its basic parts.. keep up the great work..
Great work mate loved that especially the improvisation. Nice to know that I'm not the only one to be slightly obsessed with the haunting hard driven structure of this track. One element you didn't mention though was the slightly oriental sounding rhythm track which kicks in right at the start and hangs around pretty much throughout. I find this just as fascinating as the other parts especially on live versions of the song. Looking forward to the album reviews.
Huge Numan fan here. Love Berserker album and thought the lead single was brilliant. Given he writes everything on a piano it’s great to hear an interpretation of the song. Think his songs from the core are beautiful too. I’d love to hear more piano based tracks from him too.
Beautiful breakdown and so the improvisation! and I'm so happy you're going to do Numan series - I've asked you to do it in comments under one of your first videos so long ago.)) Thank you.
Fantastic news about the Numan album series. Really excited about that. What song would I most like to see analyses? Wow, tough question. I think I’ll go with The Seed Of A Lie. Just why is that such a hauntingly beautiful song? Perhaps you can explain. Now I’m going to join your Facebook group and check out all those Depeche Mode reviews you mentioned. Love those guys. Gore-isms! I had no idea there was such a thing. Fascinating.
The drums and sequenced synth bass really make this track. I have no idea if it was intentional, but the vocals bear more than a passing resemblance to Japan-era David Sylvian.
You will find a piano version of down in the park on RUclips. It's absolutely beautiful. I would love to hear your opinions and perhaps your own adaptation
Enjoyed the piano interpretation of this great track, reminded me of the DitP piano version from the Telekon sessions. One song I’d love to see you do similar treatment of is “Exhibition,” a b-side to “ She’s Got Claws”
What intrigued me about the track at the time was not the melody , it was his change in sounds , the use of the ppg tabla percussive sound and the metallic quality of the whole album , the hunter was the best track on it
I enjoyed that. Numan is a fantastic artist. Seen him live on the Pure tour and again last year. Fantastic live. Band are tight. This sounds a bit wanky but I live all the textures and layers to his music. Really takes you away somewhere. Look forward to your next Numan video. Cheers.
If you've ever heard Skin Of The Night by M83, to me it sounds like a lost track off of Berserker. Same synths, guitar, and drums. Then there is the female vocal that is up front while the male voice is lower and mumbling. Not making fun of Numan, but that was his style of vocals he was doing at the time.
I am 51 and have been a fan since the beginning. Every time I listen to Numan my wife throws a comment: Are you in that period/state again? She thinks that I only listens to him when I am depressed. Maybe she is right...topnotch analyzis!

Particularly during the period 79-80 Gary was commercially very successful, particularly in the UK but the hits started to dry up during the 80s. Gary was dropped by Beggars Banquet after the 'Warriors' album. Now with his own record label and with developing financial problems Gary started chasing the hits. The track 'This Is New Love' contains that horrible lyric '' Put their fingers In a dyke because you know it's what she needs''. By this point Gary was relying too much on female backing vocals and saxophones to sugar his sound. I did stick with him for a few more albums but then gave up and only reconnected in the late 90's.
