80 grit sand paper until all paint and stain gone. Must get all of it so the stain can take in those paint spots. Then move down to 120 grit and so on until smooth. A multi tool sander for corners. Tape the sides of stairs to protect from stain. Then you can paint the sides and stain won’t show through. Stairs are a lot of work but if you give a bit more time, result will be even more impressive. Cheers
Turned out very nice, great job! I know how difficult and laborious it is! I am stripping our staircase, risers and spindles... I have stopped with the chemical stripper for now and making huge progress with the heat gun on lowest setting. SO much faster but will still take a very long time.
Hi, your project would have been easier if you would have done one of two things 1. Turn the step trades over 2. upgraded to oak like your handrail. Hope that helps
Awe sweetheart! You did a great job! It's probably old oil based paint that had soaked into the wood for years the only thing that probably would've took it off was car/airplane paint remover...which I'm not recommending you use but that's the only thing that was going to touch that old paint but it still turned out beautifully! ON TO THE NEXT PROJECT!😉
Thank you for sharing this!
Good on you for tackling those stairs and railing! You did have the patience though! Great job!
Thank you so much :-)
Always use a metal paint scraper, specifically for removing paint. Best product stripper is EZ Strip from Home Depot. Finish up with Mineral Spirits.
Thank you for posting this video and showing the mishaps that came along with doing a project like this!

Thanks for the feed back. Maybe I'll try the heat gun next time!
Good try. Would have been better if you had more patience
Thanks! I am thinking of puling this off finally a video that I can relate too
Should have used a stripper and followed by 60 grit 120 and 220
U need to sand the stairs more the white paint needs to come out first before u apply stain
Great work queen keep posting
Thank you so much!
