Exactly how many shares of the SPY ETF would you need to retire by 2030? 2040? This video breaks it down.
I didn't factor in taxes because it all depends on where you live and what your tax bracket is. So, either assume that all these investments need to be made within a tax free account (Roth IRA / TFSA) OR create a copy of the spreadsheet and modify it for your own personal situation.

Assuming you are not buying all the shares at once, I think it is also helpful to simulate with the same compound interest calculator the amount of money you need to invest each month. It helps you create a plan and build discipline to stick with it.
Great content! Congrats!
Cheers! Thanks for watching
If you earn 180k a year and live within ypur means, be smart and live like the average like me earner of 80k per year you have around 80k per year to invest. in 8 years you would have invested 640k of your own money give or take. Say average round off figure 9.5% compound interest you have reached your 900k in 7 years.
Its not impossible
@@shangstr how do you have 80 thousand to invest? dont you have living expenses?
@@Hassan-zw9tb He means that if someone makes 180k but lives like they make 80k then one would have surplus money to invest. I personally think having 1 exponentially huge income like 200k is tough and impractical for most people, but having you and your partner each make 70-80k a year and living off only half of that is the key!
The main reason why I love etf is it doesn’t even give me a heart attack. I can keep working on my job and focus on other things in my life while doing a auto invest of $100 everyday on voo and SCHD $50 in each with auto dividend reinvest. Growth is nice and dividend is decent too. It also gives me motivation to stop wasting money on useless material things and instead put money on my Roth IRA and regular investment account. Definitely getting a step close to retirement every day.
Love this comment! So true
100bucks daily. Damn u earn a lot
If there are people watching this, and they are as young as you, they will have a very healthy financial future.
I wish I was 25 years younger, and understood more about investment and compound interest.
I am 21 and bought my first share of s&p 500 but I’ve been buying crypto since 3 years and now I want to get to a investing habit and s&p 500 is a great choice
Nobody can become financially successful over night. They put in background work but we tend to see the finished part. Fear is a dangerous component, hindering us from taking bold steps we need in other to reach our goals.
Enjoyable video. Sequence of return can have a big impact on success or failure of the scenario presented as the sadly the 8% average S&P return isn't linear as presented so a crash in early years can derail the plan. This could be mitigated with some loss of growth by holding 2 years expenditure in cash to ensure you don't need to sell shares at a loss. Most stockmarket downturns have recovered within 2 years. The 2020 crash was recovered within 12 months.
Great video, thanks!
How is someone supposed to have 900k invested in 10 years that’s absurd
😭😂
Thats the whole point of this video, simulation
$100,000 per year to live in 2040. That is ugly. I not arguing the number but I would assume that isn't feasible for most of the population. I better revisit gardening, canning, and simplistic living of my grandparents era.
I second this
$8000 per month? That's a particularly fancy lifestyle.
remember thats in 20-30 years from now
But the lifestyle I want
Thank you- nice break down.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Super helpful content! What bankrate calculator did you use?
Does this work for V00 to?
Mark, very good content. So do we just buy all shares at once and leave it till 2030 and will that compound by itself? Or should we buy that many shares each year?
Honestly, my approach is to buy as many shares as I can as early as I can. The earlier, the better because it has longer to grow!
@@MarkFarfan Thanks Mark
Mark, if you had 85,000 in hand cash equity that you wanted to invest, where would you suggest this money should be put for the best results over 8-10 years, to capitalize on compound interest for retirement savings?
I'd suggest QQQM...that's perform better than the S&P historically
QQQM is the same as the nasdaq tracker QQQ, but with a lower expense ratio
Hi, is it practical to diversify in numerous ETF based investments like s&p and ishares and so on? Or remain steady with just one index fund?
I did in my mid term brokerage account (4-5 years for a down payment on a house) because I wanted to help ensure I had a gain. That being said I don’t know it was the best strategy because I wasn’t dollar cost averaging each ETF each week/month, so I wasn’t taking advantaged of the dips. I’d recommend one or two but not three or four different ETFs. I wasn’t able to buy fractional shares in this brokerage account either, so that was a main problem. I now switched brokerages so I could buy fractional shares, which makes it a lot easier to buy portions of $400+ shares of ETFs. Long story short, as long as you DCA then it doesn’t really matter imo
Sofi etf s&p 500 ticker SFY ...how many shares?
I feel a little disappointed by S&P 500 .After a year putting 2000 there are no returns
Just a year is nothing man, its all about time, its a marathon not a sprint. It will take time but history and the power of compound interest have proven themselves time and time again.
@@Dannykle What to say ..I really hope you are right .
Just keep putting more money in - and wait a decade or two.
Feel better this year? 😎
Interesting. A lot less than I thought I would need given it’s between 2 people. Also if I deducted social security ( I am Canadian and it is solvent), I probably can retire early .
Fingers crossed for you!!
Please do SPXL retire by 2030 how many shares
How much it pays for $100 invested?
Would be nice to see a video for someone wants to retire today and need 70k per year. And goes in lump sum. Age 50.
i'm 23 right now, do i have enough time to retire soon?
thanks for your video!
It's based on the money you have to invest not age
Great I only got 4 shares ugh. I got a long way to go
Lol yeah me too. I just started at the en of last year. I am 46 😢
I have 3 shares 😢 let’s keep building up our share count 💪😊💰📈🚀💵
The average person watching this have $2500 to their name. This video is bullish
I'm 34 and just put 50k in
@@liamcraighill How many people in America with family and bills can do that???
Congrats your 2% that can
Maybe dont go joining the rat race, blame yourself for being poor bro and then maybe you’ll understand
@nytrowgen2889 blame yourself for being poor. Really. Blame themselves for being, black, Jews, white, asian.
Everyone not born rich to attend college and achieve success. Doesn't work that way.
