I was there. Stipes came on and yelled "GLASTONBURY, ABOUT FUCKIN' TIME". It was a perfect gig, so glad I got to see them.
I so regret that I never saw them live. One of my favorite bands of all time.
Me too 😊😔
God me too!
@@AlbertMustang Nor seeing REM live is one of my worst regrets. Love their music.
Seen them live twice one of the benefits of being in my late 40s. They were incredible. One in a very large open venue and one on a small venue both in Ireland.
Come on They were fucken miserable
I had forgotten how truly wonderful they could be.
No one delivers and commands the stage like Michael Stipe - one of the absolute best. Great live band.
It's such a shame discovering a band long after they broke up. But I can say for certain that R.E.M. is my favorite band of all time and while I will never get to see them live, I'm thankful to have performances like these that are still around. Breathtaking concert.
Good on you, boss. I'm a very youthful 50 and first heard them when my eldest brother kept playing their early LPs in his bedroom and one night when he was out I snuck in and put the vinyl on with headphones to listen for myself. Must have been 85 (Fables) or 86 (Pageant). I had to keep quiet about liking them for maybe 2 years cos he'd wallop me if he knew I'd been in his room and used his vinyl (fair enough - I was proper cack-handed and probably scratched the records anyway). Eventually I plucked up the courage to talk about them (must have been 87 The One I Love when that was released) and got him to let me listen to the albums. I'm painting a terrible picture of my brother here - apologies if you're reading, Our Kid - he wasn't/isn't like that at all. But the feeling will never leave me of how underground/college rock/exotic they were. The steely guitars and harmonies evolving into the lush sounds of Green and expanse of Out of Time, as I turned 20, formative years, and then the headslam that was Automatic, an album that came in through the side door as we all thought we knew the next REM album was coming in the back door.... Insnanely unique times. That period of mid 80s-early 90s was golden. I am exceedkngly lucky to have been there and it's magic to hear the likes of yourself talking about discovering them. Good on you. Enjoy.
So many of these to watch! You need to find the one called "Tourfilm" shot at an early stage of the band's career in Athens, their hometown... You should like it!
Tourfilm is a VHS I’ve recently replaced with a DVD. It’s not aged. Great songwriting doesn’t age @@etiennecomont5077
I was lucky enough to see them on the Green Tour (89? 90? Just as Orange Crush hit Britain).
Even now, they’re still massively under-rated. Michael Stipe is possibly my favourite human
Don’t worry they’ll get back together sooner or later. If they don’t for some reason go see Stipe’s band.

REM were really important for me in my teenage years. Fantastic songwriters! I'll always love them.
Yeah. Me too.
They have super deep meaning in their lyrics.
And me, n im 21, always said I was born to late, not to late to see them which I’ll be doing but like queen that’s one thing I wish I done but it was to late, never appreciated this music until about a year ago now I get why all the “oldies”😂😅say musics not the same anymore, I get it now😂🤪
I was there! Feeling all the love on that perfect summer night. Was a wild night that one :p
My most favorite band of all time for a lot of reasons. Peter's guitar playing, Mike's bass playing and 10/10 backing vocals and Michael's singing and lyrics. Also love how they worked as a band. They weren't around for 31 years for no reason.
That's the crucial thing, they played off each other brilliantly, a great 'Band'.
Michael's voice, melodies, lyrics and stage presence.
I love this band so much! I feel I OWE this band, for giving me so much...
Thanks, REM.
My emotional support band 🤠

You do, but don't feel bad about it. It's what they wanted. Take it and be glad.
Peter's little wave to the audience at the end is why I still love them! Still the college alt band in so many ways
Well said
1:15:00 Pete completely unbothered smile by stage invader, too. Imagine the panic on so many other artists faces.
I know a couple songs by them but I never knew REM was this amazing.
Sounding as great as they ever did. One of the most important bands of the 80s, 90s, and today, with humble beginnings. So many great songs, and great memories.
I can't stop watching REM videos lately. Revisiting the 80s and 90s. More innocent pre-covid days.
They did make incredible videos to go with the wonderful music 🔥
Same here. Been on Spotify and RUclips enjoying music more since the lockdown. It’s kept me semi-sane. 🥴 Great Stuff at this concert!

Me too, it is contaious...😊
I was there, one of the best performances I've seen, love REM.
I was there too. A hot Glastonbury festival.
Who played the drums?
I was there we were on our knees by this point r.e.m being the last on the bill on Sunday up had just been released great times
I was there also, I remember just repeating to a friend over and over "it's f'ing REM!!!!", think I might have cried at one point...

My favourite band of all time. Helped me get through the 90's as a teen.
Same here
My teenage years are chronologed by every album.
Same, my mum got cancer when I was 15 back in 2007. Not a teen in the 90s, but 2007 doesn't seem that long ago
I completely agree class of 96 it was a renaissance of music and hopefully it will happen again
Same, except it was the '80s for me. ;)
I miss REM so much. They have been my favorite band for nearly 35 years. I only got to see them once, with my brother, in 1995 on the Monster tour. I still have great memories of that night but I would love to see everyone together again, one last time.
I saw them just once too, on their Monster tour in Mansfield MA. Beautiful evening and a great concert! Greatwoods was an outdoor amphitheatre and it was just lovely outside that night. A magical night. 👍
Funny I saw them for the first time also at greatwoods in 2003 by then I think it was called comcast center but don't remember as its changed names a few times over the years but it was one of the greatest nights of my life lucky enough to see them 3 times 03 at greatwoods 04 at the td garden and 08 back at greatwoods
hey Lee was that tour the one fronted by Robyn Hitchcock?
CletusAwreetusAwrightus Luscious Jackson opened for them. I was at the ATM machine their whole set so I could get some merch. 25 years later I ordered a tour t-shirt from Ebay
...Hey there, I also saw R.E.M.for the first time on the Monster Tour after a 1000 mile ride at Roskilde Festival in Denmark. Unfortunatlely it wasn`t a great Gig, bad sound, strange audience...Then I saw R.E.M. three more times in my hometown (Munich) and every single show left my speechless, I miss `em too...
I saw them live 10 times. Just found this on youtube and this is an incredible setlist. I loved this band. Still have every record.Thank u REM for making my life soundtrack so cool.
Saw them live 5 times. So you're me multiplied by two in that case;)

Thanks for posting the song list dude 👍 ✌ from Boston, Massachusetts
Gracias por tanto
Thanks! I was wondering why they would open with Daysleeper. Didn't make sense at all.
Was lucky enough to be in the crowd. Was a special moment at end of the 90s that felt like the end of the world as we knew it. Amazing gig, glastonbury that year was something special.
Sounds awesome...would loved to have been there too..
Your totally right ! I’ve been to Glasto many times, but 99 was a real a real vintage , weather was amazing, I met a great girl there and REM were such a highlight. I was centre stage right at the front ! So many good memories
I was there and it was so special it's not been the same since and REM were mind blowing, happy days indeed , seems like it was the end of the world as we know it ...
rockin in 2023 in Scandinavia... from rural cowtown US... I love how I still think of Daysleeper as 'new R.E.M.'
And the blue stripe makeup as Michael's new weird phase, always liked that
Few hours behind ya but I agree!
Jan 20, 2005. One of the best concerts I've seen in my life I thank you for that.
I have been to R.E.M 3 times live. My all-time favorite band
4 for me, all in Toronto between 99 and 04. Best one was at The Hummingbird Centre, a 3200 seat venue. The acoustics were great and the band sounded fantastic.
5 with Bill Berry , 5 without.
Incredible! I miss R.E.M. so much. Glad I was able to see them live. I hope they do some sort of a reunion show. Even if it’s a one time only
These and Nirvana are still my favourite bands. The 1990s were awesome.
What a concert
REM was and is the best
WHAT A FANTASTIC BAND!
I was at Glastonbury in 99 and had lost of my mates ... not really a big deal at Glastonbury and very common! I remember lighting a joint and sharing it with the new buddies I made that were standing near me... when everybody hurts came on we all huddled together and sang along. What a lovely memory and what a fabulous performance from a wonderful band. It would be amazing to see them one more time!
I will never take being able to see live music for granted ever again.
Agreed!
Nobody will.
Beatiful!

I was there at the front 👍 thanks for posting, I had this whole set on video but lost it 😬
I love REM and "At my most beaultiful" song... thanks for the upload.
The good old days when powered mics had a 50ft lead attached to them. Here's hoping one day before it's really too late that R.E.M can reform one more time for a Glastonbury set. One hell of a legendary group.
Without doubt my favourite band of all time - and I loved how they looked after their fanclub members - early access to ticket sales and early entrance to gigs ensuring we were on the barriers! On our honeymoon, my wife and I visited Athens to check out the remains of the church, Weaver D's, the 40 watt club, the railway trestle and even the kudzo on the cover of Murmur. Everywhere we went, people correctly guessed we were on the R.E.M. trail and were super helpful. A special band indeed!
I was lucky enough to be at Glastonbury in 1999 and this was the highlight of the whole weekend I just wish this video showed the whole set great memories though thanks for uploading it
Thought this was the whole set. The highlight for me at the time was seeing cast rather than the manics. But now looking back it was this 100%.
Oh man! One of the most significant bands of the 80’s. Love them. Thanks for our soundtrack to life, your hearts and what lies between.
My parents friend said I need to check this band out. Summerfest in Milwaukee. 1984. Stipe hung on the microphone the entire show. It was awesome. I made my way to the front row.
Stipe’s vocals are superb in this show
I was there for this concert and still one of the best I've seen!!! Class weekend.

I think I may be using this word too often, or not enough, but that show was freaking awesome.

Should have released this officially on Blu ray for this song alone🕺💎🥁💎🕺🥁👌💎
It probably won't happen but I would love a reunion tour. Just to say a thankyou to the most important band I ever heard....
I'm surprised they haven't taken advantage of the 80s/90s nostalgia wave like so many other bands.
I was born in 93 and never had a chance to see them so i would definitely pay big bucks to see them lol
DumbPunk that's not them at all to do that although I'd love to see them one more time
@@alexbaker7517 Yeah that's true but i can dream
Similar for me, I was too young when I knew them, while their career was at the end... I never got the chance to see them live, but I still keep my hopes up for a reunion!
DumbPunk
Of course, they haven’t reunited and it is highly unlikely that they ever will. As much as we would all love for them to reunite especially now more than ever.
However, I don’t know that I would say that they aren’t taking advantage of nostalgia.
After all they have released a 25th Anniversary Edition of each of their albums that have reached that milestone.
I WAS AT THIS, NEVER KNEW R.E.M. WERE PLAYING UNTILL THEY FLEW IN FROM THE U.S.A. FOR THE MAIN EVENT, RED HOT NIGHT, STILL SO SOUND WAS GREAT, SURE THE BAND KNEW THIS WAS A SPECIAL NIGHT,

Outstanding rendition of Daysleeper to start: already sold me. Thanks, R.E.M.!
One of my biggest regrets is never going to see them live. They are one of my all time favorite bands.
would it be possible for them to meet once more? beautiful for this moment, that it seems to us that life is superior; to another force. thanks REM.
no.

I was there! My first Glastonbury. I remember getting too high a few songs in after not eating enough, and pulled a whitey, my mate Rob had to help me get back out of the crowd a little. I also saw REM play again in 2003. Great times. I would give anything to go back.
They invited me in and they took me on journey through emotional spaces.
I like music rem l like all
No one can sing like Michael stipe fckin unbelievable!!!
The BBC always does a great job at live events!
Goosebumps All the way
Should show this to anyone who says REM weren't great live
Excellent live!
I was lucky to see REM once, back in 1983 at Spize in Farmingdale, NY. I was a soph in college at the time. The one and only time.
Back in the days as a child from central Europe, listening to this masterpiece 25 years ago…Sill hits the same, each time i listen to it
Thanks R.E.M. for sharing such a video on your RUclips channel. My favourite band will always be the one of Mike, Michael, Peter and Bill.
This makes me so happy. Thank you!
I first came across R.E.M. On the Tube in 83, in 85 l saw, them in Liverpool....36 years later they are still very much the Love of my Life x
Yeah, I saw that too. Bought the album the next day. Did that a lot with The Tube.
Spectacular!! Saw R.E.M. twice in the 80s and 90s and I am rediscovering my favorite band on my 20s and 30s. To me Automatic For The People is absolutely perfect in every way. Favorite R.E.M. songs are Nightswimming and Me In Honey…and…..Voice of Harold!!! 😊
That was a great trip down memory lane. Saw them about 7 or 8 times. I've always enjoyed how much more energy Man on the Moon had on stage compared to the more mellow album version. Great live band!
Wow
Yeah I can hear that. Great ear and insight. Thanks
They didn't tour properly around the time of recording it as well as Out Of Time, previously.
Thank you for sharing!
I was there! Great concert, just a shame this isn't the full show
I saw R.E.M. live in a college auditorium in Florida back in 1986. They were great then, but damn, have they gotten better! What a great concert this must have been to attend.
I saw them in Koper (Slovenija) in 1999. Two hours of pure joy!!! Thank you R.E.M.!
My favourite band ever. Rock and can ballad at the same time
Picture this, a day in december! Very nice surprise to listen this when I both love REM and Blondie
I love " Day Sleeper "
They have so many great songs that I can't pick a favorite.
I was lucky enough to see them five times live for they retired. Still my favourite band of all time. Best live performance I’ve ever seen.💯🇨🇦🌎
Noble band. Warm regards from Serbia.
Great voice, skill, and camerawork... I love it.
I remember visiting my friends at their colleges and hearing nothing but R.E.M. I was totally into other music and just could not get into it. But now years later I always think of those visits with my friends when I hear them. And I am glad I got to know this band.
R.E.M were always a great live band. I hope this show will be avaliable on blu-ray or dvd.
Michael Stipe moved me to tears (like almost) when he held that speach for the Nirvana HoF introduction ... "That voice, that voice. Kurt, we miss you. I miss you." ... and not to forget: "Nirvana defined a moment, a movement for outsiders: for the fags; for the fat girls; for the broken toys; the shy nerds; the Goth kids from Tennessee and Kentucky; for the rockers and the awkward; for the fed-up; the too-smart kids and the bullied. We were a community, a generation-in Nirvana’s case, several generations-in the echo chamber of that collective howl, and Allen Ginsberg would have been very proud, here."
sweet days never dies
Thank you, thank you, thank you for this gem.

THANK YOU, WE LOVE YOU R.E.M. !!!
I was lucky to see them play live. Never forget it
Thank you very much for share the show. 😊

Gen Y! Too old for Millenial, too young for Gen X... what BS. Feel ya! Can pass for Millenial, never cool enough for Gen X at the time... deffo neither

I saw R.E.M live twice once at a small auditorium in Greensboro N.C. in 1983 when Stipe still had long hair and again in 1984 outdoors at a small women's college in Raleigh North Carolina. Both shows were unforgettable l will never forget them Both were incredible experiences that l will never forget.

Saw them in Huddersfield in UK in (I think) 92, with The Beautiful South supporting. Wonderful concert. But this was something else. Really wish I’d seen them in their imperial phase. Untouchable. Unimpeachable. Genius.
